Road to Recovery is a nationwide service provided by the American Cancer Society (ACS).

This program offers cancer patients transportation to and from their scheduled medical appointments if needed. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicles to ensure that people with cancer get the lifesaving treatments they need.

Sometimes lack of transportation leaves cancer patients with few options for completing their treatments that are scheduled. Although family and friends may be able to help, there could be times when they are not available. Road to Recovery provides much needed transportation options for people with cancer.

The American Cancer Society coordinates the program, from recruitment, screening and training of the drivers to scheduling transportation pickups. ACS has specific standards for driver responsibilities. Volunteer drivers:

• Must possess a good driving record and a serviceable vehicle;
• May transport people with cancer to/from scheduled treatment appoints only, not non-treatment related errands;
• May not physically assist non-ambulatory people with cancer;
• May not give medical advice;
• Will contact the nearest medical facility or call 911 in case of an emergency.

At present, in Ellis County, there are only three Road to Recovery volunteer drivers which makes it difficult to meet the need of people with cancer. More volunteers are needed, so if interested contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

Road to Recover is a free service and a referral from a physician is not necessary. To arrange transportation, a person with cancer must contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org. Road to Recovery is available on an “as needed” available basis, after all other transportation options have been exhausted.
