Where else but Stafford Elementary can you go back in history and see Davy Crockett and Stephen F. Austin? These two fine gentlemen showed up at Stafford Elementary around 1:30pm on March 2nd.

In honor of the 175th anniversary of Texas’ Independence two students from Navarro College, Jon Garrett and Brandon Williams participated in a skit portraying Stephen F. Austin and Davy Crockett.

Stephen F. Austin (Jon Garrett) gave very good information on how he was involved in declaring Texas’ independence and the history of Texas. Garrett explained, “My friend, Brandon Williams, and I are putting on this skit to teach the students a little bit about Stephen F. Austin, Davy Crockett and Texas history.”

When Mr. Austin took a breath, Davy Crockett (Brandon Williams) came tripping into the room all upset about his hair. He exclaimed to the children that the indians were trying to scalp him. Taking off his raccoon hat he displayed his mohawk! The students roared with laughter. He told of how he wrestled a bear and won. He then got serious and told of his part in declaring independence for Texas.

Williams said, “I am here today at Stafford Elementary to tell the students about the importance of Texas Independence and what Davy Crockett and Stephen F. Austin did to declare this independence and help the state of Texas emerge to where it is today.”
