Grandparents love to read too!
Mrs. Morgan’s first grade class came up with an idea to get grandparents more involved in school with their grandchildren. Kids just love to have their grandparents come to school. Usually they only get to visit grandchildren in school on Grandparent’s Day.
So Mrs. Morgan came up with the idea of inviting grandparents to school to read to her class, she explained, “Children love grandparents. There is nothing better than a Grandma, Papa, Nana, or a Mimi reading to you. Grandparents have raised their children and they love their grandchildren and there are very few times they get to come to school other than Grandparent’s Day. Now they are personally invited to come to the classroom to read to the students.”
The students as a class wrote an invitation to the grandparents inviting them to come and read a story of their choice. They are also invited to stay to have lunch with their first grader.
“We have enjoyed it so much, the students are so attentive and in awe of the grandparents. This puts a special memory in their hearts of the students and of the grandparents.”
Morgan takes their picture with the grandparent with the book that was read and gives this to the grandparents as a memory card along with a thank you note.
“The students write thank you notes and send it to the grandparents that came and read to the class,”explained Mrs. Morgan.
Iva Mauldin was one of the special grandparents that came to read to the class this week and she had this to say, “I am Garret Everett’s grandmother and I came to read today to have fun with the kids because that is my favorite thing to do, to be around kids. They make you young. I read Peter Cottontail’s Easter Egg Hunt and thoroughly enjoyed it. The students seemed to have a good time too.”
Another great day at Stafford Elementary!
