For 12 years, these students thought this day would never arrive. They were impatient, forward thinking, explosive, thoughtful and raring to go. Thus describes the graduate students of Italy High School. On Friday, May 27, forty-one seniors crossed the stage for the last time and turned their tassels to the other side.

Amber Mitchell, Valedictorian for IHS, explained in her address to the seniors, “I am on top of the world but there have been individuals that paved my way, our way. There are giants that pushed me forward and motivated me intellectually.” Mitchell explained that teachers, parents and family gave motivation and basically held the door open for the graduate. Believing that she and 40 other graduates can help pave the way for someone else and reach out, she requested “Be a giant in someone’s life.” Amber said. She thanked “her” giants one more time and said, “We are true Gladiators. Our success is your success.”

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own, and you know what you know.
And you are the one who’ll decide where you’ll go.
Oh the places you’ll go.

Melissa Smithey, Salutatorian for IHS, started her speech with Dr. Seuss, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” That was the class motto as well. She explained that it was time for the graduates to tackle their own troubles. “Your lives and future have become your own.”

Today is your day, your mountain is waiting. So get on your way. ~Dr. Seuss
