Avalon Students enjoying the benefits of dual credit courses

Avalon ISD has had many achievements but one of them stands out before the rest, that is their dual credit college course program. The students have been very successful and two students in particular have worked the program to the max.

Maegan Knight and Calyn Davis, both seniors this year have worked very hard on dual credit classes. Maegan will graduate with almost thirty hours of college credits. She has taken Government, Economics, English I and II, Psychology I and II, Orientation and Algebra through Navarro College. Maegan said, "Because they are dual credits I will get my credits for High School and College so I won’t have to take them again. I am studying nursing so all these credits are my pre-requisites for nursing. I will have one more year of pre-requisites and then go right to nursing school.

When asked what kept her on track, Knight replied, “Mrs. DelBosque (school counselor), if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be as far as I am. She is really motivating, she talks to me a lot and keeps me updated on scholarships. She motivated me to do something with my life.”

Calyn Davis has taken Algebra, Government, Economics, Speech, Psychology I and II, English I and II and Orientation. When he graduates he will have thirty one credits. I asked him who had motivated him to work so hard, he replied, "Mrs. DelBosque motivated me, my Dad (Cody Davis athletic director Avalon ISD) and Sloan McCain a member of my church had a big influence on what I am doing. I am going into registered nursing and after High School I will be ready to do my clinicals.

Neva DelBosque is a counselor at Avalon ISD and had this to say, “I am very excited what these two have achieved by their initiative and perseverance these last two years. They have both worked so hard to earn so much college credits before graduation on top of all of their activities at school, working part time and remaining at the top of their class. Over the years we have had students graduate with six to twelve hours. Maegan and Calyn have set an impressive example for other students that you can get a great start on your college hours before graduation.”
