Italy — Hosted by the Italy Police Department at the George E. Scott Memorial Park on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, National Night Out was another success for the department providing a great opportunity for local law enforcement to meet the public while guests enjoyed face painting, a bounce house, patrolled by Officer Michael Thompson, a volleyball area and all the amenities the park itself had to offer, such as swings, slides and the tennis courts.

Lions Club members Flossie Gowin and Meg Lyons, with the help of Economic Development Corporation (EDC) member Charles Hyles, prepared free hot dogs for the event as well. IPD Administrator Sue Lauhoff popped free popcorn and EDC vice-president Elmerine Bell kept the snow cones coming.

The IYAA pee-wee and junior high cheerleaders performed cheers for guests and many donated prizes were handed out to drawing winners. The event also gave locals a chance to visit with one another and to run and play without concern. After all, there was no safer or more secure place in town to be than the park on Tuesday night while everyone gathered under the watchful eye of Italy’s finest.

The Fox Country Band, who also performs on Sunday afternoons in front of Italy’s Texas Best Smokehouse and Shell Station, kept visitors entertained as Italy Police Chief Diron Hill, his officers and reserve officers passed out information, stickers, key chains and more in an effort to inform and promote the nation’s emergency number 911 and to help the citizens of Italy to not be victims of crime. Always dial 911 in any emergency!
