High Speed Pursuit Ends in Italy Near I-35 and Hwy 34 After Officer Spikes Tires
On Saturday, October 27th, 2012 at around 8:50am, Italy Officers were notified by Ellis County Dispatch of a high speed pursuit initiated by Waxahachie PD and Ellis County SO going south on I-35 entering Italy. The pursued suspect had a felony warrant out for him for Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant stemming from an incident that occurred in Midlothian where the suspect attempted to run over a Police Officer.
Reserve Officer Pedro Gonzalez with the Italy Police Department responded to I-35 with spike strips (tire deflation devise) to assist the pursuing agency in an attempt to stop the suspect. Officer Gonzalez set up near mile marker 386 near the overpass barrier wall. As the suspect approached Officer Gonzalez, he swerved towards the officer with his vehicle causing Officer Gonzalez to have to jump out of the way.
Officer Gonzalez was able to deploy the spike strips while moving away causing the suspect’s tires to be deflated. The suspect then purposely rammed a Waxahachie PD unit while still attempting to flee officers. The suspect vehicle stopped a short distance later.
The suspect was taken into custody by the Waxahachie PD and Ellis Co So and charged with multiple charges including Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant for attempting to run over the Italy officer who was not injured.
