The IHS Class of 2013 stand together for the last time
Forty-seven seniors entered the dome on Friday night. It was the last time as a student of IHS. Dressed in cap in gown, some with medals and honor chords, the group lined up and marched to the Processional of Pomp & Circumstance, performed by the Italy High School Regiment Band, and headed to their seat in front of the podium. It was a night to remember.
Cole Hopkins led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the Texas flag. Brett Kirton gave an invocation and Mr. Barry Bassett welcomed the crowd to the dome. He asked the audience, “Please sit back and enjoy the celebration and success of your senior.”
Mr. Lee Joffre asked the seniors to reflect on their positive influences. He hoped all would reach their maximum potential,“You must have strong characteristics of courage, ethical decisions and be ready for change.” Joffre congratulated everyone on their success and achievements and challenged the group to look forward to the future of success.
Incoming counselor, Erica Miller was also excited about the success of the senior class, “The Class of 2013 was given $130,000 in scholarships. I am so proud of your accomplishments.”
Meagan Hooker, Salutatorian, addressed her fellow classmates, “If God brings you to it, God will bring you through it.” She suggested that the obstacles and challenges in this short journey will only make them stronger.
Madeline Pittmon gave a beautiful musical presentation from her electric harp. The music piece was entitled Andante.
Valedictorian, Reid Jacinto, reminded how in all the years together, “We needed each other to be successful.” He referred to 4 years of triumphs and defeats. He reminisced about the good times. He challenged himself and fellow seniors to “encircle ourselves with like-minded people and remember the Class Motto, ’_I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me_ Philippians 4:13”
2012 Graduate and Willis Cup winner, Megan Richards was on hand to present the Willis Cup to her sister, Alyssa. This trophy is a time honored tradition at IHS. The teachers decide who the recipient will be each year before graduation. The student being considered has to be academically successful, have outstanding character and also work in extra curricular activities.
The seniors were presented diplomas and sang the IHS school song together. Through the bittersweet tears and laughter, the graduates tossed their caps high into the air and looked straight into their future.
