Jon Cady motivates students to engage in learning
Jon Cady brings excitement and enthusiasm to the classroom and the playing field.
Jon Cady is a new math teacher at Italy High School. He is also the new head baseball coach and an assistant football and basketball coach. Prior to coming to Italy, he was a teacher/coach at Mason, Buffalo and Mansfield. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a degree in Kinesiology.
“I like small towns, so I am excited about being here in Italy,” he said. “I want to bring that excitement and enthusiasm to the classroom as well as on the field.”
His philosophy on teaching is to engage the kids and get them to think “outside the box.” He wants them to see the real life aspect of education. He has the same philosophy about teaching athletes, but in addition, he wants them to get out of their comfort zone.
“I am very outspoken and I hold the athletes accountable. I do the drills with them to show them I am truly involved. I want them to understand that self-discipline makes them better athletes. I want them to learn to work together as a team. Recently I heard one of our players say that there is no I in team, but there is an I in Italy. I agree with that.”
Cady said that he will wear an Italy uniform during baseball games just like his players do. He believes that it will show his players that he cares about them and the sport.
He has the same ideals in the classroom that he has on the field. He wants his students to know that he is not an alien teacher that just writes things on the board. He cares about their education and will help them accomplish their goals. He wants them to learn what they need to know to be productive members of society when they leave Italy High School.
Cady and his wife, Lauren, have been married for almost five years. They have two children; 3 year old Wyatt and 2 month old Maddox. Lauren is a coach in Mansfield. He enjoys outdoor sports and spending time with his family.
“I am hoping we can host a kick ball tournament this fall as a baseball fundraiser. I have done this previously and it was successful and lots of fun. I am looking forward to a great year at IHS. I hope everyone will come out and support our Gladiators.”
