Italy — A brutal matchup between the Italy Lady Gladiators and the Triple A Academy Lady Stallions Friday night tested the heart and determination of Italy’s roster to the 10th degree. The game was physical, emotional and played at a blinding pace. The lack of foul calls in the early going seemed to fuel an intense battle that heated up minute by minute.

Despite a commanding lead maintained by the Lady Stallions throughout, the game was played as if the lead was changing hands every second. Italy, under the guidance of head coach Melissa Fullmer and assistant coach Tina Richards, was not about to throw in the towel which forced Triple A to compete until the end.

Former Gladiator of the Year fan, Billy Ray Turner, had this to say regarding the events as they unfolded. “This game has district implications. With Italy hoping for a win and possible share of the district title, there should have been a third referee on this floor!”

Needless to say, Italy’s fans were into this one and the Lady Gladiators had the full support of their backers. Through it all, our gutsy Italy bunch transformed into a TEAM of hungry players who were calling for the ball, muscling up shots and clearing the boards. It was a sight to see and one of the best efforts ever displayed by a Lady Gladiator squad.

True, the scoreboard showed Triple A was the victor, 75-26. However, like many fans, I left Italy Coliseum feeling like our girls had won big time. A share of the district title would be great but, perhaps more importantly, Italy now knows who they are as a team. A “We don’t take nothing from nobody,” kind of team with a basket full of momentum as the playoffs draw near.

Congratulations to the JV Lady Gladiators who defeated Triple A Academy’s JV squad 42-12 prior to the varsity matchup!!
