IYAA Basketball – Saturday, February 1, 2014
Italy — On Saturday, the IYAA pre-K/kindergarteners (boys and girls), head coached by, Detrick Green, were led by a career high/game high 12-points from Azlin Itson to help Italy get the win, 23-9.
The IYAA 1st/2nd grade boys played next. Coached by Justin Henderson and Shedric Walker, point guard Gavin Ramirez led Italy scorers with 8-points and teammate Damien Wooldridge was next with 2-points but Hillsboro got the win, 21-15.
The IYAA 3rd/4th grade girls team, head coached by Brian Anderson, finished regulation tied with a visiting Abbott squad, 14-14. An overtime period was then played to decide the victor. Da’Nasia McCowan had led Italy with 8-points along with teammate Gentry Rogers who scored 3-points.
In the overtime, both teams went scoreless until the final seconds when Abbott took advantage of an uncontested shot opportunity in front of the basket. The ball dropped in to give Abbott a 16-14 win in yet another classic ending inside George E. Scott Coliseum.

Head coach Charles Hyles, the IYAA 5th/6th grade boys team had their hands full against a capable Hillsboro bunch. Reese Janek was solid as point guard for Italy and led the Italy offense with 5-points after going 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Teammate Creighton Hyles swished in a 3-pointer and finished with 4-points.
The day belonged to Hillsboro, however, who built and maintained a comfortable lead throughout. Despite confident shot attempts from Rocklin Ginnett and Andrew Celis, Italy’s goal remained unfriendly. Strong defense by Cade Tindol and Colby Hampton, along with a steal by Bryce DeBorde, were not enough to ward off Hillsboro’s attack who eventually won the game, 37-16.
