Sales tax up in Italy over last year
During the regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Corporation on Monday night, Teri Murdock, City Administrator, reported that the City’s sales tax was up from last year at this time. Last year the sales tax collected was $26,901.22 compared to $32,912.18 this year.
Murdock also reported that the yearly audit had been completed by Culpepper Lawrance. Tom Little questioned the $1,100 the audit had cost the EDC being too high. Murdock explained that the auditors checked everything from deposits to checks written.
President Charles Hyles updated the Board on the Upchurch Field projects.
“Bob’s Fence Company completed the fence and they did an excellent job. It looks great,” Hyles stated. “I have even had several people comment on how nice it looks. It is 10 feet shorter than projected so that should be a small savings to us over the $5,170 bid.”
He reported that a wind screen would be required on part of the fence to block the view of the walking trail from the batter’s box. This is necessary so batters won’t be distracted by a view of the walking trail. He also said that the IYAA might be willing to help with this expense. He told the directors that the benches should be here very soon.
“There is definitely more to come,” Hyles said. “There are possible grants coming up in the near future. I feel we are moving in the right direction.”
The Directors discussed joining the Arbor Day Foundation. Murdock explained that the foundation was offering an individual membership for $10. A member would then receive 10 trees. They voted for the EDC to pay for memberships for all seven directors so they would receive 70 trees to be planted at the Upchurch complex; 40 live oak, 10 oak, 10 flowering and 10 flowering mix. Joyce Hobbs suggested they set up a planting day when the trees arrive. Motion passed unanimously.
Discusson regarding ordering a City Seal for the Pavilion was tabled until a later date.
Board Members present were Charles Hyles, Joyce Hobbs, Elmerine Bell and Tom Little. Darrell Rosemond, Jackie D. Cate and Randy Boyd were not in attendance.
