Senior Awards Ceremony recognizes and honors Italy High School Class of 2014

The Senior Scholarship Award Program ceremony was held inside Italy Gladiator Coliseum on May 15, 2014.

This year marked the first official presentation of the Marty Haight Memorial Scholarship with daughters Hannah Haight and Grace Haight presenting the $500 scholarship to Jessica Garcia.

The ceremony also gave the students and those attending a chance to reflect on the memory of former IHS graduate Shelley Nance whose mother and father, Cynthia and Sam Nance, presented a scholarship in Shelley’s honor to Joseph Sage.

Annual memorial scholarships were also given on behalf of M.E. Singleton, Walter Upchurch, Jewell Major, Joann Knott Aldridge and former Italy ISD Superintendent George E. Scott whose scholarships of $500 per semester while attending college were presented by daughter, Diana Herrin, and son, Tom Scott, to five deserving Italy seniors including Taylor Turner, Emily Stiles, Monserrat Figueroa, Jesica Wilkins and Zain Byers.

Taylor Turner and Justin Wood tied for the highest ACT score with 23 to earn the Principal’s ACT College Readiness Scholarship and Joseph Pitts received the Principal’s SAT College Readiness Scholarship. David Shoeford was on hand to present Monserrat Figueroa, Joseph Sage, Bailey Walton and Jesica Wilkins with the Lone Star Cyclists Scholarships and DCI Scholarships were presented to Ryisha Copeland and Corl McCarthy.

There were several more scholarships presented and honors received but the largest collection of seniors recognized were of those who donated blood. Recipients of Carter BloodCare Honor Cords were Paige Westbrook, Cody Medrano, Kevin Roldan, Justin Wood, Adriana Celis, Monserrat Figueroa, Jessica Garcia, Joseph Pitts, Zain Byers, Emily Stiles, Jesica Wilkins and Taylor Turner.

Congratulations to all the graduating seniors and to those who went above and beyond to make a difference within their school, as well as, within their community. Whether being called upon to donate blood, create a piece of art, raise and show animals, make the highest grade, give a perm, lead a band, offer water to a cyclists or help a Lion assist others, members of the Italy High School Class of 2014 answered the call time after time.
