Italy hoop stars Kortnei Johnson and Emmy Cunningham earn TGCA All-State honors
Congratulations to 2014-2015 Italy Lady Gladiator basketball players Kortnei Johnson and Emmy Cunningham for earning TGCA (Texas Girls Coaching Association) All-State Honors!
Johnson, a senior, and an LSU commit for track, ads her All-State basketball honor to an already illustrious career as a Lady Gladiator. Johnson’s track speed was evident on the basketball court as well with her ability to cover the floor and get to the rim. With 4 seconds remaining against Frost, it was Johnson’s defensive rebound and sprint up the court that resulted in a game winning layup to help secure Italy’s 6-0 undefeated in district record.
Johnson received the District 12-2A 2014-2015 MVP award, as well as, being named to the TABC 2A Region II All-Region girls basketball first team. It was Johnson’s second consecutive season to receive All-State honors and make an All-Region team.
Cunningham is one of only four freshman in all classifications to be named All-State after being the floor general for the Lady Gladiators this season. She could hit from three-point range as if she was shooting a layup. At 5’,10", Cunningham is an excellent dribbler and is also accurate from the free throw line.
Cunningham was the District 12-2A 2014-2015 Offensive Player of the Year, was Academic All-District and is currently playing AAU ball with a team in Dallas.
The Lady Gladiators were head coached this season by Melissa Fullmer and assistant coaches Tina Richards and Nicole Tindol. Fullmer was named Coach of the Year in District 12-2A.
