Italy ISD Summer School Update Regarding Commissioner of Education Decision

Parents and Guardians,

On June 10, 2016, the Commissioner of Education released a letter to school administrators. The following is an excerpt from the letter:

Cancellation of June STAAR Testing for Grades 5 and 8
Given that June STAAR test results will not be required to be used for promotion decisions for SSI purposes and are not used for accountability, I am cancelling the June administration of STAAR for grades 5 and 8. Students in grades 5 and 8 who did not perform satisfactorily on the March 2016 or May 2016 STAAR mathematics and/or reading tests will not be retested in June. We encourage districts to use local discretion to determine on an individual basis whether accelerated instruction should be offered in the applicable subject area for students who did not pass the mathematics and/or reading assessments in March and/or May….”

As a result of this letter the administration at Italy ISD has determined that summer school for grades 5 & 8 will continue as scheduled to ensure academic success for those students. The last day for summer school for grades 5 & 8 will be Thursday, June 16, 2016.

The summer school schedule for students who need to retake the high school End-of-Course exams has not been changed.
