In Flanders Fields

The world’s most famous war memorial poem by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. It was composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915 during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium.

A Veteran’s daughter’s memories

Image: Mike Maida was a proud Marine who was wounded on Hill 660.

Growing up in the Maida household consisted of strict discipline, forced sharing with two sisters, garden veggies, fried bologna and war stories to name a few. My mother met my father in San Diego during WWII. She was from Italy, Texas stationed at Camp Pendleton in the Navy – he was a Marine from Syracuse, New York that had been wounded on Hill 660 and was also at Pendleton. Daddy was born in the country of Italy and had come to America when he was a year old.

V-E Day, May 8, 1945

Image:

If you weren’t alive on May 8th, 1945, I don’t think we can know how households, towns, and the entire nation felt when victory was declared in Europe. The political and industrial leaders of America had already started planning for the post-war era, but Americans were simply thankful that one part of a dreadful war was over. The war against Japan continued but victories there were starting to mount.

Italy ISD recognizes U.S. Veterans

The Italy Independent School District honored United States Veterans Monday morning with a community wide program. Students from elementary school through high school were involved in honoring the men and women who have served their country.

In honor of Veterans’ Day – Finding a hero right here at home

Image: Johnny Jones served our country during the Viet Nam war and now serves our community by teaching our students at Italy High School.

Most heroes don’t think they are deserving of the title. Most of them say they were just doing their job. Most veterans will tell you they are not heroes, but they are. Their sacrifice and willingness to give their life for their country prove they are heroes in their own right. Anytime someone is responsible for saving another’s life, they are a hero.

Continuing a tradition one flag at a time

Image: Italy youth help place flags on veterans graves at the Italy Cemetery.

Several years ago, Thomas Franklin Porterfield and his wife, Mary, decided that they would place flags on the graves of veterans at the Italy Cemetery. Porterfield was a retired Air Force officer and realized the sacrifice each veteran had given for America. Thus a tradition was born.

V-E Day May 8, 1945

68 years, a lifetime. 4 years was also a lifetime. 68 years ago today the nightmare for millions in Europe and America partially ended. Victory in Europe was the end of hostilities there, but it continued in the Pacific.

Letter to the Editor: Andrew Freeman follow-up

In July of this year we published information regarding First Lieutenant Andrew Freeman, a former Italy student, who went in harm’s way for his country and was injured in Afghanistan.  We have received the following update from Andrew’s parents, Ray and Roma Freeman.

A special thank you

As Americans, we are blessed to live in the greatest country on earth where freedom is one of our biggest blessings. This freedom is one of the most expensive luxuries we have. It was paid for with the lives of members of our Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. These men and women have given us so much without expecting anything in return. The least we can do is to say “thank you”.

Honoring our local Veterans

Image:

On Friday, November 11, the community is invited to an assembly honoring our local veterans at Italy High School. The celebration will begin promptly at 9:00am in the George Scott Gymnasium and everyone is encouraged to wear red, white and blue to carry on the theme of the day. Our veterans are invited to an intimate Meet & Greet gathering at 8:20am in the high school library before the main celebration. Refreshments will be served.

I would do it all over again

Remembering V-J Day

65 years ago a determined generation of Americans celebrated V-J Day.  It almost didn’t happen as Japanese Army officers tried to prevent Emperor Hirohito’s radio broadcast to the Japanese people announcing the defeat.

Letter to the Editor: The Korean War

60 years ago the Korean War began and cost over 30,000 American lives. While the war has never officially ended we have allowed it to be forgotten by many Americans. In some cases it’s not even a footnote in the history books.

Support for troops evident at the highway

Image: Support for our nation — Church in the Wildwood Ministries hung this sign on the highway for passersby to see and acknowledge. One person certainly did.

Church in the Wildwood Ministry has a message for all the troops. If you drive south on I-35E, you will notice a red, white and blue sign hanging on the fence that says, “PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS”. Alvin and Mayme Onstad try to fly their flag on the appropriate days and pray for our soldiers every day.

Memorial Day poem

If you’re a veteran you’ve most certainly seen or heard this poem. If you’re over the age of 40 you’ve probably heard it. If you’re my age you remember when organizations gave away or raised money selling poppies this time of year.

A Heroes’ Reunion

Image:

Danny Neil, a graduate of Avalon High School, had known Ronnie Compton, a graduate of Italy High School, all his life. Their parents were friends so the boys had grown up together and knew each other very well. After graduation from high school, however, the friends lost track of each other.

Say Thanks

Image:

Sometimes hearing “Thank You” keeps me going. I do things because I want to, not because I feel like I have to. When someone says thanks it makes me feel good. Most of us are so busy we sometimes forget to let someone know we appreciate them.

Veterans honored at local program

Image: John Henry Greer — Elmerine Allen Bell held the portrait of her Great Uncle John. He registered for World War I in our hometown around 1917. He traveled to France as a foot soldier and still has a copy of his registration papers.

Red, white and blue were the colors of the day on Wednesday. Local veterans were honored at Italy High School with a commemorative program and a reception. Special music, photographs of days gone by and a guest speaker were on the agenda.

Let’s put out the flags

We are asking anyone in the Italy community to meet at the Italy Cemetery flag pole at 1:00PM Saturday, November 7th to put out flags on all of the Italy veteran’s graves. Hope to see you there.

Lest we forget

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a holiday of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. It can also be a day to remember what other members have lost in service to our country.

Veteran’s Day

Image: How proud it waves — The flag of the United States of America, the symbol of our freedom and the banner of our veterans.

Freedom, wonderful freedom. I have never fought in a war. I have never lost a child to war. Yet, I am allowed to live in a land that is free due to great sacrifice of others. I take for granted that I can go home each night to a warm, safe house and sleep in a warm bed. I have no worries of bombs going off where I lay trying to sleep. I don’t worry about trudging through foreign lands and foreign terrain praying I don’t step on a land mine or turn a corner and run into the enemy staring down his gun.
