The Ellis County Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee held its quarterly meeting on Monday, January 4, 2010 to hear updates from County Engineer Joe White and Project Manager Jon Vidaurri.
The Italy Park Board will meet today, Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The meeting will begin at 6:30 in the council chambers at Italy City Hall, 105 W. Main Street. The agenda items include discussion of the recent Italy Christmas Festival and planning for future Park Board projects.
Two citizens – Judi Rowe and Joan Grabowski — addressed the city council Monday evening at its monthly meeting held in council chambers.
There will be a regular meeting of the Italy City Council today, January 4, 2010 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Italy Municipal Building, 105 Main Street. Agenda items include prioritizing street repairs and consideration of an inter-local agreement for on-site septic facilities between the City and Ellis County.
Having unanimously approved application for the funding on November 9, 2009, Ellis County Commissioners today accepted $46,476.38 in grant funding to continue a program that focuses on vehicle emissions. The grant is funded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The meeting began with the roll call. Mark Stiles, Mark Souder Sr, Randy Boyd, Tom Little and Darrell Rosemond were all present. Elmerine Bell and Joyce Hobbs were absent.

First Assistant Auditor Cheryl Chambers was recognized in Commissioners’ Court on Monday for obtaining her certification as a County Investment Officer.

The Italy City Council is contemplating the possibility of closing Simms Street between US 77 and Main Street until the bridge on Couch Street is completed.

There will be a regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Corporation on Tuesday, December 15th at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Italy Municipal Building, 105 Main Street. Agenda items include a possible early payoff of the Fire Truck and a presentation of the Baseline Analysis by EDC consultant David Miracle.
Beginning Monday, December 14, 2009, Pigg Road will be closed due to Bridge Work. Pigg Road is scheduled to re-open February 2010.
The 2nd Annual Italy Christmas Parade & Festival, hosted by the City of Italy and the Italy Park Board, was held on Saturday, December 5 and was a fun time for all ages.
The City of Italy’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, December 6 at the Cornerstone in downtown Italy included the singing of Christmas carols, hot chocolate and prayers as the Italy Ministerial Alliance and the City of Italy pray that you and your family have a most joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Ellis County employees were honored Friday night at the Ellis County Employee Appreciation Dinner held at the Civic Center in Waxahachie.
“Under the authority of Local Government Code 234.033, I will make a motion to deny location of a proposed slaughterhouse at 855 Slama Road because the operation is incompatible with existing land use of the neighboring area,” said Commissioner Bill Dodson, pct. 2. The motion came after extensive public testimony both for and against the proposal.
The Texas Highway Commission approved Thursday $25.2 million of Proposition 12 Rehabilitation funds to be used in Ellis County. The funds will be used to resurface lanes and ramps on Interstate Highway 35 from US 77 south of Waxahachie to approximately one mile north of Johnston Road.
In a specially-called meeting Ellis County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to allow Ellis County to apply for a grant. The grant is funded by the American Recovery and Reinstatement Act. (ARRA) and being allocated through the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO).
A heated discussion occurred Tuesday evening about how to spend funds at the conclusion of the Italy Economic Development Corporation meeting.
The Italy Economic Development Committee will have a meeting November 17, 2009 in the Italy Council Chambers at 6:30pm. The agenda includes a presentation of the SWOT analysis by EDC Consultant David Miracle.

Ellis County Commissioners called on the public to provide input Monday night during a regularly scheduled meeting of the Court. The topic was 9-1-1 address display format standards as described in House Bill 2665, passed in the 81st Texas Legislative Session. The bill amends the Transportation Code by authorizing the Commissioners’ Court to adopt and impose standards for design and installation of address number signs to identify properties located in unincorporated areas of the county.
On Monday night, the Italy Park Board met at 6:30 in the Council Chambers and discussed the Italy Christmas Festival slated for December 5.
About two dozen residents identified Italy’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats at a monthly meeting of the Italy Economic Development Committee Tuesday evening.
The Italy Economic Development Committee will have a regular meeting along with a Strategic Plan Steering Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in the Italy City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:00pm. In a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, October 12, the Ellis County Commissioners’ Court declared the week of October 25-31, 2009 to be Red Ribbon Campaign Week in Ellis County.
The November 3rd Election day is fast approaching. Early voting will begin on Monday, October 19th. The Italy City Council Chamber (105 W. Main Street) will be the local polling place for the early voting. Please note that early voting in Italy will take place only on October 19 through October 23. If you wish to vote early on October 24, or October 26 through October 30 you will need to travel to do so.
October 14, 2009 has been declared by the mayor of Italy to be Italy Youth Athletic Association (IYAA) Day. Mayor Frank Jackson also presented the first Volunteer of Year Award for IYAA to local parent, Barry Byers, on Monday night in a special session before the regular council meeting.
Due to the continued heavy rains and the nasty weather the Italy National Night Out event has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 13. This community wide event will be held at the George Scott Gymnasium at the High School from 6-9 p.m.
The Italy City Council approved an ordinance Monday evening changing the school speed limit to 20 mph between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. when school is in session.
The Italy City Council will have two meetings on Monday, October 12. The regular meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at City Hall beginning at 6:30. In addition to their monthly meeting the Council will have a short Proclamation Reception at 6:00 pm. During this reception the Council will honor the IYAA Volunteer of the Year.
Another regular quarterly meeting of the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee found the County’s bond program still on time and under budget. The project was approved by voters in May of 2007.

October will once again be recognized as Czech Heritage Month in Ellis County, the proclamation having been approved during Monday’s regularly-scheduled meeting of the Commissioners’ Court.
With Homecoming behind us we can all look forward to the next big community wide event, the 2009 National Night Out. The NNO will be held on October 6th. The Italy Police Department is planning a fun-filled fall evening but is in need of some volunteers to help them out.
