The Italy Economic Development Corporation (EDC) forged into a partnership with David Miracle, an economic development consultant, at its monthly meeting held Monday night in city council chambers.
I am writing this letter to announce my decision to run for a seat on the Italy School Board. I am asking you for your support during my candidacy. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a few things about myself.
Early voting for the Italy ISD school board election will begin on Monday, April 27, 2009 and run through Tuesday, May 5th, 2009. The times will be 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It will take place in the administration office located at 300 S. College, Italy, Texas. Election day is Saturday, May 9th 2009. The location is Wayne Boze Building located at 161 W. Main, Italy, Texas from 7:00 AM to 7:00PM.
The next regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Committee is scheduled for Monday, April 27. Agenda items include David Miracle to address the board regarding Professional Economic Development Services, discussion and possible action on a sub-committee review of Italy EDC By-laws, setting policies for federal per diem and mileage rates and management of EDC administration. There will also be discussion and consideration of funding a park project at Upchurch Fields.
I am Elmerine Allen Bell, a retired Texas public school teacher. My formative years were spent in Italy where I attended school and gained my first outlook on mankind, values and life. My parents, the late Elmer and Fredna Allen, were my motivators, and they required me to perform to the best of my ability.
Everyone in the city is going to get a new roll away trash can for trash disposal, with the new DCI trash contract that the city decided on last night. The council also discussed the art class painting a mural on the old train trestle concrete, the building codes and permits, budget adjustments for sanitation contract, and action regarding the Substandard Building Ordinance.
The Italy Park Board has postponed May Day in the Park until liability issues could be resolved between the school district and the city. Five of the nine-member board was present at a meeting Tuesday evening in city council chambers.
The Italy Park Board will meet on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Agenda items include drawing for terms of office and discussion of plans for “May Day in the Park” scheduled for May 2, 2009.
The Italy City Council will have a called meeting on Monday, April 20, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. Some of the agenda items include city sanitation contracts, a Substandard Building Ordinance and painting the old train trestle concrete.
The Italy City Council voted Monday evening to pass an ordinance providing a salary for the mayor. The council approved the ordinance at their monthly meeting held in council chambers.
The City Council will be meeting Monday, April 13th at 6:30 p.m. with a full agenda. They will be covering building permits, bids for sanitation services, updating the building codes, leasing the water tower to Skybeam, action on the pet ordinance, application for the Cops Grant for the police department, review the audit report, review of the Substandard Building Ordinance, evaluation of the city secretary, and the Mayor’s salary.
The Park Board Committee met Tuesday evening April 7th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Italy City Hall. Members present were: Stephanie Wilson, Susan Harris, Bruce Utley, Jason Escamilla and Janet Campbell.
The seven member City of Italy Park Board will meet on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Agenda items include drawing for terms of office, discuss and consider action regarding planning for the Easter Egg Hunt and discussion of plans for new park equipment. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at Italy City Hall. This meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 and is open to the public.
Terri Murdock loves her job as city administrator for the City of Italy, “I love the city, I love the old downtown area, there are some beautiful old houses here. All of the people that I have met have been extremely nice, warm and welcoming and that is great, really great.”

The next regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 23. Agenda items include swearing in of newly appointed member, Tom Little, report from Elmerine Bell regarding the 2009 Legislation in Austin, and dicuss the hiring of an EDC professional.
Italy and Milford candidates seeking city council and school board election have thrown their hats into the proverbial ring. Some will reach their positions unopposed, while others will have to campaign and win their seats May 9th, 2009.
The Italy City Council reinstated the Italy Park Board Monday evening at its monthly meeting held in council chambers. The council filled other vacancies on the Economic Development Board and the Planning and Zoning Board.

Potential candidates can still pick up ballot packets for our area’s City and School elections. Although the election date will be Saturday, May 9, deadlines for filing applications to be placed on the ballots are fast approaching.

The Italy City Council approved the repaving of Park Street at a work session held Monday evening. The council approved the refurbishing of the south end of Poplar Street at its regular meeting held in February. They group tabled repairs to Park Street and White Street until the work session.

At their last meeting, the Italy City Council scheduled a work session for Monday, February 16, 2009. The work session will begin at 6:30 and be held in the council chambers at City Hall.
The Italy City Council heard good news Monday night at its monthly meeting. Don Chambers, fire chief, said the Insurance Service Office has reclassified the City of Italy from a Class 7 to a Class 5.
During this month’s regular City Council meeting, tonight at 6:30 p.m., the council will begin the meeting with an alternative energy solutions presentation. The upcoming general election (election of Mayor and three Council Seats) details will be discussed as well as requests for traffic signs and street repairs, some of which had been tabled from previous meetings.
The City Council meeting had many items on it’s agenda. It included rezoning, street repairs and hiring for the Public Works Director vacancy.
The City Council will discuss and consider the re-zoning of the old nursing home. As previously reported the Italy City Council tabled the final approval of this proposed zoning request during its January monthly meeting.

In response to an August inspection conducted by the I.S.O. (Insurance Service Office, Inc.), the City of Italy has managed to lower it’s insurance classification down to a 5 thanks to area renovations. Property owners may be eligible for lower insurance rates.
The Italy Planning and Zoning Commission met Thursday evening, and approved three zoning changes regarding property along Hwy. 77.

Family and friends gathered at the Uptown Cafe as the ESD #3, Italy Fire Chief, Don Chambers and Captain Jackie Cate honored the local firemen at an appreciation dinner Monday night. Each volunteer was given an award for years of service.

City of Italy Court Clerk Susan Delephimne has been placed on paid administrative leave during an investigation by the Texas Rangers, according to Mayor Frank Jackson.
The Italy City Council met for a called meeting Tuesday evening to discuss various ordinances. These include the water ordinance, grease trap for restaurants ordinance, the vicious animal ordinance, the peddlers and street vendor ordinance, alarm system ordinance, and others.
The Italy City Council extended the contract for its interim public works director for 90 days with a review to follow at the end of that period. Council members approved the motion unanimously following a lengthy executive session held during a council meeting Monday evening.
A straightforward Italy City Council meeting is expected for tonight. In a called meeting Monday night, the Italy City Council met in executive session for over an hour to discuss employee pay raises, interview a candidate for the City Administrator/Secretary position and discuss filling the position.
Today begins early voting for November 4 elections. In Texas, a registered voter may vote early for any reason, and Ellis county voters can vote early at any early polling location within their comissioner district. Go to Finding my Polling Place on the Texas Secretary of State web page or Ellis county voters can go to the Voter Registration Office located at 106 S. Monroe Street in Waxahachie.
