One of my favorite things to do is cook. I enjoy feeding my friends and family members when I can. The majority of them like to eat what I cook which makes me happy.

Summer Career College offered for area youth entering 7th-9th grades

HILLSBORO, TEXAS—Hill College is pleased to announce the launch of Career College, a summer enrichment camp for students entering 7th through 9th grades. Career College will be held at the Hillsboro campus Monday, June 26, through Thursday, June 29, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. The cost is $149 per student and will include a T-shirt and lunch each day.

Meet and Greet City Council Candidates immediately following council meeting

We are giving the community the opportunity to meet the City Council Candidates on Thursday, April 20, 2017 @ 7:30pm immediately following the called meeting. The candidates will introduce and tell a little bit about themselves. The community will also have the opportunity to speak with individual candidates after everyone has been introduced. We will meet at City hall located at 161 W. Main St.

A Cancer Crusader

Image: Zina Guthrie knows how important finding a cure for cancer really is. She is raising money for this year’s Relay for Life as a part of the First State Bank team.

Zina Guthrie has supported the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life for several years with donations. She is employed by First State Bank of Rice in Italy, so when the bank decided to create a team for the Ennis Relay, she did not hesitate to join.

Turtle Cadets Earn Trophies

On March 25th, students from the Hillsboro Unified Tae Kwon Do School, located at 125 W Elm-Hillsboro, Texas for almost 21 years, traveled to Giddings, Texas to compete in an invitational Unified tournament. Two students from the Turtle Cadet program at the Hillsboro UTKD School competed.

To register for the fun, go to http://tinyurl.com/ko2o2ng and sign up, OR you may pay Mrs. Joffre at the high school or Mrs. Chambers at Stafford Elementary. Checks should be made out to Italy ISD.
The race will begin and end at the high school—300 S. College Street, Italy. Race start time is 8:00 a.m. for runners and a few minutes after that for walkers. Check in time begins at 6:00 a.m.

Starting a new chapter

I appreciate the folks at Neotrib allowing me to submit articles, especially Karen’s Korner. It has given me a way to share my opinion or write about people that are important to me. It has also given me a platform to vent when things bother me. It has been a rewarding experience to say the least. I have also covered the school, city and happenings around town. I love to write.

New Italy Police Chief comes on board April 3rd

Chief Michael Taylor was born in Talladega, Alabama in 1957. His family moved to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1961 and he grew up attending Grand Prairie public schools. At age 17 Chief Taylor enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as an Aviation Crash Fire Fighter and Rescue Technician. He was honorably discharged in 1978, and headed home to Texas.

IHS Theater Presents One-Act Play

The Italy High School theater department will present George Kelly’s comedic drama, “Finders Keepers” this Friday, March 24 at 2:45pm in the high school gymnasium. The play tells the story of a woman who finds a purse with a large sum of cash in it and the ensuing moral quandary.

IHS Art student experiences The Warehouse Dallas

Claudia Abundiz Jimenez, a sophomore at Italy High School, spent much of her time over spring break at The Warehouse Dallas. The Warehouse houses a contemporary art collection spanning from post World War II to present day and hosts student workshops for those students interested in pursuing some type of career in art.
