After a 2 ½ hour closed session for final interviews for Police Chief position, the Council returned to open session and unanimously voted to hire Mike Taylor with a salary of $52,000. In addition to Taylor, the council also interviewed two other candidates.

The Italy City Council will have their monthly meeting on Monday, March 13, 2017 in the Italy Boze Community Center at 161 W. Main Street, Italy. Meeting time is slated for 6pm.

Twenty years ago the Italy Gladiator basketball team won state. Their legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of each of the athletes, coaches and Italy Gladiator fans. This year the Gladiators wanted to repeat what the 1997 team had done and worked hard to achieve that goal.

Aarion Copland, a senior at Italy High School, has been selected as one of the top basketball players in Texas and invited to participate in the 18th Texas Roundup All Star game to be held on March 18th in Maypearl, Texas.

This evening the School Board will have three meetings. Although there are some construction items to address, the purpose of meetings is to meet the required steps to pursuing a status of District of Innovation.

When someone passes away, the loss is felt by their family and friends. Other times when a person dies, because they are well known and loved throughout Ellis County, the loss is magnified.
Doris Jane Holley Mitchell, age 77, went to be with the Lord March 1, 2017 after an almost one year courageous battle with cancer. She left this world with nothing but peace and love for everyone that she knew.

The Italy Gladiators advanced to the Regional Tournament with their 56 – 37 win over the Big Sandy Wildcats on Tuesday night. Italy fans traveled to Centerville to pack the gym and support the Gladiators. The Italy Cheerleaders keep the crowd fired up and loud.
Tommie Fikes, age 76, of Italy, passed away Monday morning February 27, 2017 at Hill Regional Medical Center in Hillsboro. He was born July 19, 1940 in Italy, Texas to Cecil and Claudine (Embrey) Fikes. He had worked for Owens Corning for 35 years and had been employed at Vineyards Auto Supply for 16 years. He loved to fish and play golf. Tommie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blooming Grove. He worked hard all of his life and always took care of his family.

Little known fact…Milford is the home of a backyard upholstery shop owned by Mr. Clarence Snell. Clarence recently recovered chairs for the offices at Monolithic and the staff couldn’t be happier with the results.
Local members of the Ellis County Silver Spurs 4-H Club judged their way to a championship banner and other top ribbons at the 2017 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Silver Spurs “Pink” team earned first place in Junior Horse Judging out of 49 junior 4-H teams and 155 individuals.

HILLSBORO, TEXAS—Hill College’s new industrial maintenance program is offering an eight-week course beginning March 20 called Introduction to Industrial Maintenance. From mechanical skills to safety, this course provides an overview of many of the skills needed by today’s industrial maintenance technicians. In addition, students in the class will be eligible for the OSHA 10 certification, which prepares students for recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace.

The 2017 Italy Lions Club BBQ Cook-Off fundraiser went off without a hitch. Well, except for the 29 hitches that rolled into Upchurch Ballpark on Friday pulling behind them personalized barbeque pits from around the country as participants grilled and basted for top prizes.

Pastor Duane Chambers, 70, of Italy received his heavenly reward and went home to Glory on Sunday, February 19, 2017. A celebration service of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Smithfield United Methodist Church in North Richland Hills. Burial will follow at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Last month, select students from the Italy Band in grades 7-12 competed in the Centex Honor Band auditions. The Centex Honor Band is an invitational Honor Band consisting of 27 schools in the Waco area which are division 3A or smaller with three performing bands, two at the high school level and one for junior high students.
