The Salvation Army in Waxahachie will begin accepting applications for their annual Christmas Assistance Angel Tree program September 29th through October 16th. Monday-Thursday, 9am-12pm and Saturdays, 9am-2pm. The Angel Tree program is able to provide Christmas gifts for children (14 and under) through the donations other others in the community. All families interested in receiving this assistance, must apply during application dates.

Italy Junior High School’s Hunter Hinz, age 12, is proving to be a master marksman in archery as he won back to back 4-H tournaments in 3D archery over the past two weekends. Hinz competes in the intermediate, ages 11 to 13, compound aided division of the sport.

In a called meeting Monday night, the Italy City Council voted to discontinue the salaries of the mayor and council members. By law this cannot go into effect until after their term expires. At present the mayor receives a yearly salary of $15,600. Each council member receives $600 yearly.

Lupe “Sandy” Zapata, age 57, of Bardwell, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014. She was born March 10, 1957 in Ennis, Texas to Natalio and Rosa Zapata.
The Gladiators begin their 2014 campaign 0-2 after a loss to Maypearl but hope to get on track against the Blooming Grove Lions this coming Friday in what will be Italy’s first home game.
The JV Gladiators showed promise but the visiting Maypearl JV showed up ready to play on Thursday at historic Willis Field in Italy.

Shirley J. Ratliff, of Italy, passed away Saturday morning, September 6, 2014 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab in Italy. She was born in Dallas County, Texas to Leo and Lillie Burns Cates. Shirley spent the majority of her life as a seamstress until 1992 when her daughter, Pamela was diagnosed with brain cancer.
Central Baptist Church is hosting a Sunday School teacher training seminar on Saturday, September 13, 10am-12pm at Central. Professional speakers and teachers will present tips and techniques to help Sunday School teachers and youth workers as they teach the word of God. The seminar is free, and lunch will be provided.

Sunday, September 7th, 2014 Reverend Lamar Jones of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church of Italy will lead the 1st Pastoral Appreciation Service. The service will begin at 3:30pm and immediately following the service there will be a dinner served at the Italy Boze Community Center in downtown Italy.

On August 27, 2014, in Ellis County, Texas, Leonard Allen Hennard was on trial for two felony counts of family violence assault. While the jury was deliberating his guilt or innocence Hennard, who was on bond at the time, fled the courthouse and has not been seen since. If you see him you should ensure your own safety and immediately call 911.

The Gladiators received an influx of new players while already relying on younger players to fill their varsity roster. Therefore, Head Coach Charles Tindol played them all in a scrimmage against Palmer’s best. Freshman thru seniors, every Italy player was a varsity Gladiator this past Thursday.
School personnel are often our unsung heroes. They take more complaints than they do praise most of the time. They work endless hours to assure our children are educated, safe and well fed.
The City of Italy needs everyone’s help to better our communities chances of receiving a park grant. We are requesting as many signed letters from the community as possible. The more letters we receive, the better our chances of receiving the grant!

In an effort to increase the safety of our students Italy High School is implementing a new drop-off and pick-up procedure. We are asking all students, parents, employees and community members to use the routes outlined in the attached map when going to the high school during these times: 7:30am – 8:00am & 3:15pm – 3:45pm.

Italy High School will host a second meeting discuss the drug testing policy with parents. The meeting will be held in the high school cafeteria at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2014. Mr. Joffre, the high school principal, will discuss the testing procedures as defined in board policy. A representative from Pinnacle Medical Management will be available to answer questions from parents.

The renowned Gladiator Regiment Band’s Booster organization will have their first meeting of the new school year on Wednesday, August 20th at 6:30pm. Meeting location will be in the band hall at Italy High School. We urge all parents/guardians with a child in the band attend this informative meeting.
For those of you in the city of Italy and surrounding areas, Monolithic always welcomes donated medical equipment and is currently in need of all types of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc. The donated items are distributed as a FREE service to those in need.
The Gladiator Football JV and varsity squads will play their first scrimmage tomorrow, Saturday, August 16th. This will be the traditional “White Towel Scrimmage” and they ask that everyone bring a white towel (or two) to donate to the football program. A donation box will be available. Scrimmage starts at 10:00am at the IHS practice field (vs Valley Mills).
All Italy High School 9th through 12th grade students are invited to the 4th annual IHS Back-to-School-Bash on Monday, August 18th. The event will begin at 7:30pm and end at 10:30pm. The bash will be held at 871 Stafford Road (The Lewis’ House) just south of Italy. Burgers and all the fixings along with swimming, volleyball, ping pong, horseshoes, and dancing will be available to the students at this fun event held in their honor.

The JV Lady Gladiator Volleyball team will travel to Kaufman on Saturday, August 16th to play in an eight team tournament. Italy’s first game will be 8am against Wills Point. Good luck ladies!!
