Thoughts on our upcoming elections

I felt like I needed to write something about our upcoming election and the turmoil that surrounds our city government. I didn’t quite know what to say, until my brother in law, Gary Clark, brought a quote to our staff meeting.

2014 local elections’ polling schedules

On Saturday, May 10, 2014 Italy will have the elections for school board seats as well as city council seats. Milford will have a city council election as well as mayoral election. Early voting will begin on Monday, April 28. For our readers convenience we have compiled a list of locations, dates and times for early voting as well as election day voting.

Steven Farmer and Paul Cockerham solicit input from Italy citizens

If you have been concerned about the tone of the current political atmosphere in Italy, Steven Farmer and Paul Cockerham would like to invite you to voice your concerns this Saturday (April 26) from 11am to 1pm at the Italy Pavilion Downtown. Free hot dogs and drinks will be provided. Steven and Paul are both running for City Council and need your input and support to help make Italy a better place to live and raise our kids.

Movie Night at the Cornerstone April 26th

There is a Movie Night planned at the Cornerstone Downtown for April 26th. The movie, Creature From The Black Lagoon (in 3D) will begin at 8:30pm. Bring a lawn chair and your favorite movie snack and enjoy the outdoor cinema set up in the parking lot.

Letter to the Editor: Valid Italy City Council issues

I would encourage everyone that is interested to watch the video from the last council meeting. You will see that the City Council stated that Department Heads have operational control of their departments. In the case of the Police Department, the Chief has operational control which includes determining who is on the wrecker rotation. The only business discussed was wrecker service for the Police Department when they needed a vehicle towed.

Italy Food Pantry is in need of a storm door

The Italy Food Pantry serves people in our communities of Italy, Avalon, Milford and Forreston by helping families to extend their food dollars. Most of our 80 clients are retired, single-parent, disabled, unemployed, and also includes those wonderful people assisting relatives by taking in their children to live with them.

Read It Forward: Pass It On

Italy High School is getting ready to start its fifth annual Read It Forward: Pass It On literacy project which will begin April 21st and will end May 23rd. The goal is to see how many 7-12 grade students, teachers and staff members can read the chosen book Girl, Stolen, by April Henry.

Italy high school principal, Mr. Lee Joffre, is dressed to promote a special night — the Italy High School 2014 Prom. He is wearing a camo-vested tuxedo from Lone Star Western & Casual to advertise for the upcoming event.

Italy Community Activities Committee work session planned

The Community Activities Committee would like to invite anyone who would like to help stuff Easter Eggs this evening. They will begin at 5:30 pm at the Boze Community Center and stuff Easter Eggs until we run out of candy or fill all the eggs. They greatly appreciate the participation our community has given to the events. Thank you City of Italy!!!

A Tetrad of Lunar Eclipses begins tonight

An extraordinary series of lunar eclipses is about to begin. The action starts on April 15th when the full Moon passes through the amber shadow of Earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad—a series of 4 consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six month intervals.

Italy and Milford students compete in Tae Kwon Do tournament

On March 1st, 2014, 68 students from the Hillsboro Unified Tae Kwon Do School located at 125 W Elm-Hillsboro, Texas traveled to Giddings to compete in an invitational Tae Kwon Do tournament. These students competed in sparring as well as patterns. Seven of these students were from Italy or Milford area.

Calling ALL Lady Gladiator Softball Alumni

Tuesday, April 15th at 5:30pm the presence of all Lady Gladiator Softball alumni is requested at the Italy HS softball field. In addition to the final home game of the 2014 season, the Lady Gladiators will be celebrating a “Throw Back Night” and have extended a special invitation to all alumni.

Italy City Council 2014 Candidate Questionnaire: John Droll

Kate and I have lived in Italy since 1992 when I retired from the U.S. Army. We have 3 sons; Harvey and his wife Jenny reside in Pearland; Joshua and Amber reside in Italy with Reagan, Tatum and Mia; Jordon and Jennifer reside in Waxahachie with Maddox and Liam. I have been a Special Education teacher since 1996 in the Desoto and Itasca school districts. I am currently the DAEP teacher for Itasca ISD.

IHS Dual Credit information for 8th, 9th, 10th & 11th grade students

On Tuesday, April 29th at 6:30 p.m., Italy High School will host a parent information night with the Navarro College Dual Credit Coordinator. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend to get information about the registration process, entrance requirements, costs and scholarship opportunities for the 2014-2015 school year. Parents will also have an opportunity to ask questions at the high school without having to drive to Navarro.

City Council candidates answer questions from citizens

On Monday night approximately 30 citizens of the Italy community met at the Italy Community Center to ask questions of council candidates. Paul Cockerham, John Droll, Steven Farmer and Pete Hinohosa were given an opportunity to let the citizens know why they were running for the council and give their views on city issues. Incumbents Frank Jackson and Dennis Perkins, Jr. are running for reelection but did not attend.

Prayer time continues for City of Italy

Italy resident and Pastor James Johnson is urging all residents to join him Sunday evening, April 6, as he “Prays for the City of Italy.” Johnson said the city needs to find unity, not diversity.
