I felt like I needed to write something about our upcoming election and the turmoil that surrounds our city government. I didn’t quite know what to say, until my brother in law, Gary Clark, brought a quote to our staff meeting.

A field loaded with talent from both Italy and Milford entertains fans from both towns with the Gladiators and Bulldogs battling to decide their district fates. With the dust settling and the sun about to set, it was Italy standing on top the district mountain with two games remaining.
On Saturday, May 10, 2014 Italy will have the elections for school board seats as well as city council seats. Milford will have a city council election as well as mayoral election. Early voting will begin on Monday, April 28. For our readers convenience we have compiled a list of locations, dates and times for early voting as well as election day voting.
If you have been concerned about the tone of the current political atmosphere in Italy, Steven Farmer and Paul Cockerham would like to invite you to voice your concerns this Saturday (April 26) from 11am to 1pm at the Italy Pavilion Downtown. Free hot dogs and drinks will be provided. Steven and Paul are both running for City Council and need your input and support to help make Italy a better place to live and raise our kids.
Local egg hunters had a blast participating in a pair of Easter Egg hunts with sprinkles of colorful eggs and an appearance by the Easter Bunny, played by Breyanna Beets, highlighting the events.
The Lady Gladiators will take on Mart on Thursday, April 24 at 6pm in Corsicana. This will be a one game bi-district playoff matchup with Mart. The winner of this game moves to the area round of the playoffs.
There is a Movie Night planned at the Cornerstone Downtown for April 26th. The movie, Creature From The Black Lagoon (in 3D) will begin at 8:30pm. Bring a lawn chair and your favorite movie snack and enjoy the outdoor cinema set up in the parking lot.
I would encourage everyone that is interested to watch the video from the last council meeting. You will see that the City Council stated that Department Heads have operational control of their departments. In the case of the Police Department, the Chief has operational control which includes determining who is on the wrecker rotation. The only business discussed was wrecker service for the Police Department when they needed a vehicle towed.

The Italy ISD Board of Trustees will have their monthly meeting on Monday, April 21st, 2014. Meeting time is slated for 7:00pm in the Italy High School’s cafeteria at 300 S. College Street, Italy.

The Italy Food Pantry serves people in our communities of Italy, Avalon, Milford and Forreston by helping families to extend their food dollars. Most of our 80 clients are retired, single-parent, disabled, unemployed, and also includes those wonderful people assisting relatives by taking in their children to live with them.
Italy Youth Athletic Association (IYAA) softball and baseball stars continued honing their skills while giving it their all for their hometown fans this past Saturday at the Upchurch Ballpark in Italy.

In the regular meeting Monday night, the Italy City Council voted to purchase equipment for the Public Works Department to use for street repairs. They also approved a Resolution to borrow the money for the equipment from Government Capital.

The Community Activities Committee would like to invite anyone who would like to help stuff Easter Eggs this evening. They will begin at 5:30 pm at the Boze Community Center and stuff Easter Eggs until we run out of candy or fill all the eggs. Hello, my name is Franky Jackson, lifelong resident of Italy, and graduate of Italy High School. I also attended Hill College in Hillsboro. I have served 8 years as a council member and 14 years as mayor. I attended 11 meetings out of twelve.
Junior power hitter Jaclynn Lewis hit a solo homerun shot that carried over the centerfield fence to help Lady Gladiators win the first game of a double-header 10-0 against the GPAA Lady Eagles on Friday. Italy shutout GPAA in game two, as well, 16-0.
The Italy City Council will have their regular monthly meeting on Monday, April 14, 2014. Meeting time is slated for 6:00pm and will be held in the Council Chambers located at 105 West Main Street, Italy.
An extraordinary series of lunar eclipses is about to begin. The action starts on April 15th when the full Moon passes through the amber shadow of Earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad—a series of 4 consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six month intervals.
The Italy Gladiators made fairly quick work of the visiting Grand Prairie Advantage Academy Eagles on Friday after winning via the run rule, 12-2 in the top of the fifth-inning. Junior Kyle Fortenberry put the exclamation point on the win with a 2 run inside-the-park homerun.
On March 1st, 2014, 68 students from the Hillsboro Unified Tae Kwon Do School located at 125 W Elm-Hillsboro, Texas traveled to Giddings to compete in an invitational Tae Kwon Do tournament. These students competed in sparring as well as patterns. Seven of these students were from Italy or Milford area.
Tuesday, April 15th at 5:30pm the presence of all Lady Gladiator Softball alumni is requested at the Italy HS softball field. In addition to the final home game of the 2014 season, the Lady Gladiators will be celebrating a “Throw Back Night” and have extended a special invitation to all alumni.
The Italy Gladiator hitmen flirted with putting one over the fence all game in Frost but it was finally accomplished when John Byers cleared the left field fence and scored a field goal thru the uprights of the Polar Bears’ goal post on their football field.
The Gladiators post their second shutout of district play with a 10-0 win over the visiting Itasca Wampus Cats, improving to 4-0 in district play. Pitcher Ty Windham goes the distance recording 9 strikeouts and John Byers records a 3 run inside-the-park homerun.
Recently Ray Schufford was at Stafford Elementary pumping up the students for their upcoming STAAR tests. You could hear laughter and could see miles of smiles in the gymnasium that day.
Your Lady Gladiators have climbed back into the district race with a rematch win over Frost, avenging their earlier district loss to the Lady Polar Bears in a seven inning stress riser.
Kate and I have lived in Italy since 1992 when I retired from the U.S. Army. We have 3 sons; Harvey and his wife Jenny reside in Pearland; Joshua and Amber reside in Italy with Reagan, Tatum and Mia; Jordon and Jennifer reside in Waxahachie with Maddox and Liam. I have been a Special Education teacher since 1996 in the Desoto and Itasca school districts. I am currently the DAEP teacher for Itasca ISD.
On Tuesday, April 29th at 6:30 p.m., Italy High School will host a parent information night with the Navarro College Dual Credit Coordinator. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend to get information about the registration process, entrance requirements, costs and scholarship opportunities for the 2014-2015 school year. Parents will also have an opportunity to ask questions at the high school without having to drive to Navarro.
Austin — A handfull of Lady Gladiators recently competed in the 2014 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
On Monday night approximately 30 citizens of the Italy community met at the Italy Community Center to ask questions of council candidates. Paul Cockerham, John Droll, Steven Farmer and Pete Hinohosa were given an opportunity to let the citizens know why they were running for the council and give their views on city issues. Incumbents Frank Jackson and Dennis Perkins, Jr. are running for reelection but did not attend.

The JV Gladiators batted their way back into the game and then a walk off hit by Pedro Salazar clenched an 8-7 comeback win for Italy in front of their hometown fans.
Italy resident and Pastor James Johnson is urging all residents to join him Sunday evening, April 6, as he “Prays for the City of Italy.” Johnson said the city needs to find unity, not diversity.
A few tweaks here and there allowed the Lady Gladiators to win their district rematch over Itasca with team chemistry at an all new level.
The Milford Bulldogs led by pitcher Eric Evans tested the Gladiators on Tuesday with Evans locked in a bit of a pitcher’s duel against Italy senior Tyler Anderson. In the end, the Gladiators made a late rally to win 4-3 and improve to 3-0 in district play.
The Ellis County African American Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for their 2014 Hall of Fame Class. Nomination forms must be received by April 15, 2014.
The Lady Gladiators secure their first district win, 20-1 over Avalon, and gain some much needed momentum in time for the remainder of their district push.
