Our community has been hurting for some time now and I think we need new leadership to help bring this town back to what it once was. I personally am running because I want to be a voice for the community. If elected I promise there will be no personal agendas and there will be more transparency.

Randy Compton is in the fight of his life

When Randy Compton graduated from Italy High School in 1972, he had many plans and dreams. He loved to hunt and fish and hang out with his friends. He never dreamed that life’s road would take him where it has brought him to today, fighting cancer for the third time.

IYAA to be honored at IHS baseball and softball games Friday, April 4

Friday night, April 4th, there will be big goings-on at the Italy High School Baseball and Softball fields! Besides our Gladiators and Lady Gladiators taking on rival Itasca on the sacred red sand, our IYAA will be honored during the pre-game introductions. Also, during the night, in a joint effort between the baseball and softball teams, there will be a drive-thru hamburger stand available—YUM!

Phoebe visits Trinity Mission

Recently at Trinity Mission, residents could be seen petting and loving a beautiful dog by the name of Phoebe. Even visitors coming to visit loved ones couldn’t resist stopping and petting this beautiful and loving dog.

S.M. Dunlap Library closed for painting

Due to interior painting and the resulting obstacle course of scaffolding, ladders and the like, the Library will be partially closed for a few days. If you have a book that’s due, just hold on to it. The librarians will be at the Library between 3 and 4 on Tuesday, April 1, through Saturday, April 5, if you need a book, computers or a FAX. You might want to call ahead. They apologize for the inconvenience.

Letter to the Editor: Questionnaire suggestion

I have noticed that the candidates for School Board Members rarely if ever, mention their responsibility to the tax payer, it the ones that through their propery tax make the School District possible. It seems to me that the questions for the candidates and current School Board members should be expanded to include something similar to the below.

Prayer time for city rescheduled

Italy resident and Pastor James Johnson has reschedule a prayer time to pray for the city and its leaders. The meeting was originally planned for March 23 but due to the weather conditions, he rescheduled the prayer time to Sunday, March 30.

EDC unanimously voted to purchase City Seal for Pavilion

During the regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Corporation Monday night Charles Hyles (president) reported on the progress of the walking trail at Upchurch Ball Fields. He said the sand volleyball court is now ready to be put in. The sand has arrived and was donated by Jarod Mandrell. Hyles also reported there is $2,925.00 left in the walking trail fund.

Italy Junior High kicks off STAAR season with a Math Blitz

The First day of Italy Junior High School’s Math Blitz to get the 8th graders ready for the STAAR test was a awesome success. Students had a lot of fun and got their learn on. All IJHS 8th graders are more than welcome to attend on Wednesday, March 26th from 3-5 pm and on Thursday, March 27th from 3-5pm as well.

Having been born and raised in Dallas, Stephanie Penner is now enjoying life in our small town of Italy. Having only been living in Italy for four years now she is still in awe of the quiet country life, the lesser traffic and the slower pace.

Gladiator Athletic Booster Club meeting scheduled Monday, March 24

The Gladiator Athletic Booster Club will have a meeting on Monday, March 24 at 5:30pm in the Italy High School Library. All parents, coaches and supporters of Italy High School athletic programs are urged to attend. The new administration has requested several changes in fundraising policies and procedures and these need to be discussed in detail.

Prayer meeting for the city Sunday

Italy resident and Pastor James Johnson is urging all residents to join him Sunday evening, March 23, as he “Prays for the City of Italy.” Johnson said the city needs to find unity, not diversity.

Italy ISD Board takes no action

In a special called meeting on Monday night, the Italy ISD Board of Trustees went into executive session to discuss establishing a new administrative position of an assistant principal. After meeting for a little over an hour in executive session, the board reconvened into open session and took no action on the item. They then moved to adjourn the meeting.

In Memory of Tim Archer

Many of us knew and liked Tim Archer, who passed away on March 2. He was a student of history, an avid reader, and a Vietnam veteran who served his country bravely and well.

Agenda: Italy City Council Special Called Meeting-Monday, March 17, 2014

The Italy City Council will have a special called meeting on Monday, March 17, 2014 in the Council Chambers at 105 West Main Street, Italy. Meeting time is slated for 6:00pm. The agenda includes three agenda items requested by the mayor to readdress the two resolutions and one ordinance that was voted on at last week’s meeting along with two other agenda items.

Notification upon Changing from Free Chlorine to Chloramines

On February 24 ,2014 March 12, 2014 the City of Italy’s Works Water System will be changing the disinfectant that use from chlorine to chloramines. This change is intended to benefit our customers by reducing the levels of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the system, while still providing protection from waterborne disease.
