Our community has been hurting for some time now and I think we need new leadership to help bring this town back to what it once was. I personally am running because I want to be a voice for the community. If elected I promise there will be no personal agendas and there will be more transparency.

The Lady Gladiators suffer their second district loss after an explosive start to the season but don’t count Italy out just yet with Jaclynn Lewis returning to the circle which frees up Madison Washington to play shortstop and Tara Wallis to patrol right field.
When Randy Compton graduated from Italy High School in 1972, he had many plans and dreams. He loved to hunt and fish and hang out with his friends. He never dreamed that life’s road would take him where it has brought him to today, fighting cancer for the third time.
Before I filed to seek a seat on the Italy City Council, I had prayed about it, thought about it and talked to several people I respect and trust including my husband, Brian.
Voters should consider my ability to envision a desired future and lay out effective ways of bringing about that future. This ability has been earned from years of planning and decision making as a leader in both the civilian world and that of military combat.
The City of Italy will be having their 2nd annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Friday, May 2nd from 6pm to 10pm. There will be a salsa and guacamole contest, music, games and lots of food and craft vendors.
On Monday, April 7, 2014, there will be a question and answer session for the 2014 Italy City Council Candidates. The event will begin at 6:00pm and will be held in the Italy Boze Community Center at 161 W. Main Street, Italy.
Please join us at the next Stafford PTO meeting on Tuesday, April 8th at 6:00pm in the Stafford Cafeteria.
Friday night, April 4th, there will be big goings-on at the Italy High School Baseball and Softball fields! Besides our Gladiators and Lady Gladiators taking on rival Itasca on the sacred red sand, our IYAA will be honored during the pre-game introductions. Also, during the night, in a joint effort between the baseball and softball teams, there will be a drive-thru hamburger stand available—YUM!

Recently at Trinity Mission, residents could be seen petting and loving a beautiful dog by the name of Phoebe. Even visitors coming to visit loved ones couldn’t resist stopping and petting this beautiful and loving dog.

The Gladiators baseball team dropped their final two preseason games to both Maypearl and Buffalo but responded with a win over Grand Prairie Advantage Academy to begin district play.
Mrs. Loyd V. Towery, widow of Alfred Glen Towery, died October 18, 2013 of congestive heart failure.

I have noticed that the candidates for School Board Members rarely if ever, mention their responsibility to the tax payer, it the ones that through their propery tax make the School District possible. It seems to me that the questions for the candidates and current School Board members should be expanded to include something similar to the below.

I am seeking a seat on the school board because of my passion for education first and foremost. Second, my passion for the IHS community at large. Third, I feel that diversity and honest open communication are the keys to progress in any organization according to best practices.

Italy resident and Pastor James Johnson has reschedule a prayer time to pray for the city and its leaders. The meeting was originally planned for March 23 but due to the weather conditions, he rescheduled the prayer time to Sunday, March 30.
The math department at Italy High School has put together a MATH BLITZ for the all the 8th graders, a a four-day tutorial session to help students prepare for their upcoming STAAR Test.
The Board of Trustees of Italy Independent School District welcomed Jamie Velasco to his first board meeting as the new superintendent.
During the regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Corporation Monday night Charles Hyles (president) reported on the progress of the walking trail at Upchurch Ball Fields. He said the sand volleyball court is now ready to be put in. The sand has arrived and was donated by Jarod Mandrell. Hyles also reported there is $2,925.00 left in the walking trail fund.
On March 21st, 2014, the Italy Police Department received the award of “Recognized Law Enforcement Agency” from the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Recognition Program.
The First day of Italy Junior High School’s Math Blitz to get the 8th graders ready for the STAAR test was a awesome success. Students had a lot of fun and got their learn on. All IJHS 8th graders are more than welcome to attend on Wednesday, March 26th from 3-5 pm and on Thursday, March 27th from 3-5pm as well.

Having been born and raised in Dallas, Stephanie Penner is now enjoying life in our small town of Italy. Having only been living in Italy for four years now she is still in awe of the quiet country life, the lesser traffic and the slower pace.

The Gladiator Athletic Booster Club will have a meeting on Monday, March 24 at 5:30pm in the Italy High School Library. All parents, coaches and supporters of Italy High School athletic programs are urged to attend. The new administration has requested several changes in fundraising policies and procedures and these need to be discussed in detail.
Italy High School seniors have been working very hard to pursue their future endeavors. Several students have been accepted to a post-secondary school. We also have several students who have applied and are awaiting their acceptance letters.
The Italy Community Activities Committee held their second meeting Monday night at 5:30 PM. Committee members in attendance were: Ronda Cockerham, Nancy Hinojosa, Chelsea Beets, Christopher Baker, Christina Ward, Sarah Reid and Joseph Barrett.
Italy resident and Pastor James Johnson is urging all residents to join him Sunday evening, March 23, as he “Prays for the City of Italy.” Johnson said the city needs to find unity, not diversity.
In the city council meeting the citizens spoke openly with Mayor James Hobbs and the council members expressing their opinions regarding the purchase of street and water equipment. Jimmie Hyles addressed the chug holes and the cost of the equipment to repair the matter.
Italy’s JV Gladiators open the Milford JV Invitational baseball tournament on Saturday, March 22 starting at 9:00 a.m. against Milford’s JV Bulldogs.
Avalon ISD has been nominated for the 2014 National Blue Ribbon School recognition out of 8,000 schools by the Texas Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams. There were only twenty five campuses in Texas that were nominated and Avalon ISD was one of them! Winners will be announced in Washington in September.
The Lady Gladiators had a long night against visiting Maypearl but the season is still young and Italy is determined to get back into the win column.
In a special called meeting on Monday night, the Italy ISD Board of Trustees went into executive session to discuss establishing a new administrative position of an assistant principal. After meeting for a little over an hour in executive session, the board reconvened into open session and took no action on the item. They then moved to adjourn the meeting.

Many of us knew and liked Tim Archer, who passed away on March 2. He was a student of history, an avid reader, and a Vietnam veteran who served his country bravely and well.

On February 24 ,2014 March 12, 2014 the City of Italy’s Works Water System will be changing the disinfectant that use from chlorine to chloramines. This change is intended to benefit our customers by reducing the levels of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the system, while still providing protection from waterborne disease.

The award winning Italy Gladiator Regiment Band held its annual Spaghetti Dinner as a scholarship fundraiser for its band members on Saturday. With the Uptown Cafe buzzing throughout the event, the band had one of its most successful dinners yet!
Congratulations to the Italy Gladiator Regiment band for earning straight 1st division ratings from all three concert judges and all 3 sight reading judges at the Region 8 UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest. The contest was held at Groesbeck High School on March 5-6.
