My mama taught me many things as I was growing up. Several of her lessons I learned the hard way via a plum tree switch or her hand. Others she drove home in other ways via things like grounding. Needless to say she was strict.

ID badges at Italy High School

In order to improve safety procedures at Italy Junior High and High School all students are required to wear a school issued identification card. This procedure was put into place to help teachers identify students who may not be assigned to one of their classes. Our visitors and employees are also required to wear an ID so we can identify all people who are permitted on campus.

City council approves agreement with Love’s Truck Stop

In their regular meeting Monday night, the Italy City Council approved a resolution authorizing an agreement between the City of Italy and Love’s Truck Stop. The agreement states the city will provide Fire Suppression and Sewer Service for the 16.79 acre Love’s Truck Stop planned on the corner of Hwy 34 and Interstate 35 E. South Ellis County Rural Water Corp. will furnish the water to the new business. The city discussed charging Love’s a maintenance fee for fire protection.

George Scott Scholarship fundraiser

The 22nd Annual George E. Scott Memorial Scholarship Dinner was held last Friday night before the Homecoming football game in the school cafeteria. The catered meal by Bubba’s Barbecue of Ennis featured brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, bread and tea.

The Italy City Council will have their regular monthly meeting on Monday, October 13, 2014. Meeting time is slated for 6:30. Just prior to this meeting , there will be a Proclamation Reception announcing the IYAA Volunteer of the Year. This reception is scheduled for 6:00pm. Both the reception and meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers at 105 West Main Street, Italy.

Italy’s Nick Sam earns 4 foot trophy

Academic Achievement Awards were recently awarded at the Hillsboro Unified Tae Kwon Do School’s June grading. For the past 18 years the Hillsboro TKD School located at 125 W. Elm Hillsboro, Texas has awarded many students, who are excelled in both martial arts as well as academics, 3 and 4 foot trophies.

Information regarding 2014 Homecoming parade

Parade participants will need to start lining up at 1:30 in the Italy High School parking lot. Numbers will be handed out for each participant to display on their float/vehicle so everyone can just follow the number ahead of them. Reserved seating tickets available

Season tickets with reserved seating are available for purchase at the superintendent’s office. In order to ensure that season ticket holders’ reserved seats are available we will have ushers at the game. The ushers will check the season ticket holder’s pass and help them find the correct seat.

Frost VFD to hold fundraiser BBQ dinner and car show

Frost VFD fundraiser BBQ dinner and Car show will be held Saturday, October 18, 2014. The car show along with motorcycle and tractor show starts at 10:00am. So, bring your rides out and show them off. Entry fee is a donation to the FVFD. Tell all your friends to join us for fun under the sun!

Italy Ex-Students Association’s yearly dues

It’s not too late to pay your dues to the Italy Ex-Student Association scholarships for the 2014-2015 year. The association awards two $1,000 scholarships to a male and female graduating senior each spring. Simply complete the form attached and return to the post office box listed on the form.

TxDOT Notice of Public Meeting

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) will hold a public meeting regarding the proposed widening of I-35E from 2.17 miles south of FM 566 (Hill/Ellis County Line) to US 77 south of Waxahachie. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the Italy High School Cafeteria, 300 College Street, Italy, Texas 76651. The meeting will be held in an open house format from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Is following the law important?

It is my choice to attend city council meetings. I have been doing that for a very long time. I like to hear things first hand. I try to keep up with what is going on and be informed. Because of this, I hear things that sometimes cause red flags to go up. Other times, something might be said that hits home with me for various reasons. The latter happened at a council meeting recently, hence the reason for this writing.

IHS Baseball sends thanks

The IHS Baseball team, coaches, and parents would like to thank everyone who helped make the 2014 chili supper fundraiser a success. The money raised will go towards purchasing new uniforms and new bats for the coming baseball season. Come out next spring and see your IHS baseball players shining in their new uniforms.

National Night Out

A reminder that next week is National Night Out on Tuesday Oct. 7th from 6pm-9pm at Upchurch Fields. We will be having music, Careflight Helicopter, food, bounce house, dunking booth, face painting, Police Department equipment on display and much more. Everyone is invited to attend and its free admission for all. Come out and meet your fellow citizens of Italy!

Italy High School Graduates of ’44, ’54, ’64, ’74, ’84, ’94, ’04 and ’14 sought

All IHS graduates of ‘44, ’54, ’64, ’74, ’84, ’94, ’04 and ’14 are invited to attend Italy High School’s 2014 Homecoming festivities. All will be recognized at the start of the Homecoming game against Dawson. Recognition ceremony will be held at 7:00pm on the historic Willis Field. Graduates are asked to meet at the field house at 6:45pm.

Homecoming 2014 planning is underway

Homecoming 2014 is just around the corner, and preparations have already begun. On October 10, 2014, the parade will start at the high school parking lot and will wind around to end behind the First State Bank with our crowd-rousing pep rally during which the Homecoming King will be announced.

Italy City Council approves budget

On Thursday night, the Italy City Council met in a called meeting to approve the 2014-2015 budget. City administrator, Teri Murdock, explained the proposed budget reflected the future changes as a result of the recent vote to do away with mayor and council salaries.
