Rare Solstice Lunar Eclipse Tonight!

Everyone knows that “the moon on the breast of new-fallen snow gives the luster of mid-day to objects below.” That is, except during a lunar eclipse. For the first time in many years, northern winter is beginning with a total lunar eclipse.

Doris Mitchell and her crew are helping the community on Christmas Day and have done the same for years. Doris said, “We had 93 people come eat with us last year.” Italy residents that don’t have a family to share dinner with or just want to see a friendly face, can come to the Uptown Cafe on Main Street in downtown Italy and share in the potluck dinner being served.

Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight and tomorrow night

The Geminid meteor shower peaks this year on December 13th and 14th. Forecasters say meteor rates could exceed 100 per hour for observers under dark rural skies. For best results, start your meteor watch on Monday night, December 13th, around midnight.

IHS Class of 2000 Hosting 10 Year Reunion Friday

The Class of 2000 Reunion is this Friday, October 22, with activities before and during the football game. Please join us in the high school cafeteria at 6 p.m., and then during the football game, look for the tent with the banner where we’ll be gathered.

Fall Festival planned at First Baptist Church

Saturday, October 30, 2010 the First Baptist Church of Italy will have their annual Fall Festival. This free, fun event for the entire family will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There will be a bounce house and games along with treats and eats. The entire community is invited!

Bethel UMC to host 59th Annual Lord’s Acre Sale

The congregation of Bethel United Methodist Church in conjunction with the Bethel Cemetery Association invites everyone to attend it’s 59th Annual Lord’s Acre Sale on Saturday, October 16th. Festivities will kick off at noon with a free barbecue lunch, followed by the auction that will raise funds for the church, cemetery and the completion of the new Bethel Community Center.

The monthly Prime Timers Luncheon held at the Central Baptist Church (CBC) in Italy, not only served up a great meal to guests, it also gave the community a chance to meet and enjoy a discussion with Ellis County Commissioner of Precinct 3, Heath Sims, who highlighted the current status of the county and gave insight into the everyday business of the Commissioners’ Court.

The State Fair of Texas is here! Not only the food is an attraction but the rides on the midway and the exhibits bring people from all over the state to see the annual phenomenon. The fair has been in existence over 100 years. Thousands of people enter the gates to seek thrills and spills and gawk at Big Tex in the beginning of fall.

Carter Blood Drive Coming To Town

Saturday, October 9 from 9:00am-2:00pm, Carter Blood Mobile will be set up in Italy at the Cornerstone on Main Street. Central Baptist Church is hosting the event and wants to remind prospective donors to bring a list of current medications and a picture I.D.

Even though it was raining cats and dogs it did not dampen the spirits at the Family Fellowship Church where they were hosting an outdoor Back to School Blast Saturday afternoon.

George Scott Scholarship Dinner helps graduates

The community showed up in full expectations to have a great meal and of course, help out Italy graduates with the desire to attend college or technical school. The 18th Annual George Scott Memorial Scholarship Dinner was attended on Friday night before the Italy High School Homecoming game by many ex-students, community members and friends of scholarship recipients-well over 200 people.

IHS Class of 1960

A few members of the Class of 1960 will be at the George Scott Dinner and the football game for Homecoming on the 17th. Classmates will spend Friday night at the LaQuinta in Waxahachie and would enjoy visiting with friends on Friday or on Saturday morning at the LaQuinta. They will eat together Saturday noon and then return to their homes. If you are interested in visiting and/or eating with us on Saturday, just call for Margaret Epperson’s room at the LaQuinta.

One hundred thirty two Italy Junior High and High School students of all faiths feasted on hot dogs, nachos and homemade desserts Friday night after the Gladiator football game. The members of Central Baptist Church were happy to host the group and have them come to the Cornerstone and enjoy themselves in a safe, Christian atmosphere.

End of Summer/Back to School Blast Saturday, September 25

Saturday, September 25th, from 4pm-7pm the Family Fellowship Church is having a fun event for children ages preschool thru 6th grade. There will be activities, entertainment and a meal served at 6:00pm. Admission will be two canned goods per person.

Trinity Mission’s Marie Wood Retires

Marie Wood will be retiring from her many years of service at Trinity Mission as the facility’s administrator. On Monday, August 30th there will be a retirement celebration from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. with an open seated dinner.

Local author has book signing

Mayme E. Onstad, local author of children’s books, has a public book signing scheduled for Saturday, June 12 at Hastings Book Store in Waxahachie from 5pm-7pm. She will be highlighting Urple Fishing, a newly published writing with the theme of forgiveness and love.

City of Italy “Clean Up Day”

On Saturday, June 5th there will be a clean up day. City of Italy residents can bring a loaded truck or trailer to the CSC Landfill in Avalon for disposal. Residents will need to have their current water bill in-hand. CSC will be open from 7:00am to 11:00am.

Save the date for the Daddy-Daughter Dance

On Saturday, June 5, the Union Missionary Baptist Church will be sponsoring a Daddy-Daughter Dance. This formal dance will be held at the Italy High School beginning at 7:00pm. Admission will be $20 per couple. Fathers and Grandfathers alike are invited to escort their young ladies to this memorable occasion.

IHS Athletic Banquet reminder

Due to the run in the playoff’s by our Lady Gladiator Softball Team and Gladiator Baseball team the annual IHS Athletic Banquet had to be postponed and rescheduled several times. As this outstanding athletic year comes to a close the banquet to honor all our Gladiators and Lady Gladiators is finally before us.

Saddle Ridge Ranch coming to town

A new ranch is coming to Italy and it is exclusively for kindergarten through 6th grade age children. Central Baptist Church is hosting Saddle Ridge Ranch, this year’s Vacation Bible School. Saddle Ridge Ranch will be held June 14 – 18, 2010 from 9:45 a.m. to noon at Central Baptist Church, 113 S. Ward Street in Italy.

Milford Craft Fair-a success

Titus Women of Milford held their craft fair on Saturday, May 8th and had quite a crowd. Jeannie Richardson of the Titus Women said, “We had a great crowd and the vendors were so happy they want to do it again next year so I call it a success”.
