Friday, October 31 was Halloween and Stafford Elementary did it up right for their students. Throughout the day the students were invited to play games, jump in a jump house and get their faces painted.

When you walked into Stafford Elementary, Thursday, October 30 lots of laughter and cheering was heard through out the gymnasium. Stafford Elementary teachers were playing “Knock Out” (a basketball game) for a prize, as all the students cheered on their teachers.

Pumpkin contest at Stafford Elementary

Pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins. But these were not just any ordinary pumpkins — oh no! These were pretty pumpkins, scary pumpkins and all kinds of decorated pumpkins. There were spider pumpkins, witches and pirate pumpkins, just to name a few.

Red Ribbon week

Monday morning at 9 a.m. students at Stafford Elementary began Red Ribbon week activities. Accompanied by Mrs. Bedard, school counselor, and Rita Garza, school nurse, children put their hand prints on a huge red banner signifying their desire to live a drug free life.

IHS mock election registration

The government class at Italy High School is sponsoring a Presidential “Mock Election”, on election day Tuesday, November 4 during A & B lunch. We are going to be registering students Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday — October 29-31 during A & B Lunch. Students, forgetting to register is giving up your right to vote. Protect that right, register.

Colors today, Spirit tomorrow

At Italy High School, you can see colors running everywhere. The contest is to see how many students dress in the color assigned to their class. Mrs. Ann Hyles, freshman sponsor, said, “This is TAKS retesting week, as well as Homecoming. The main objective is to teach. But we are still wanting to have some fun, but we keep it low key.”

Box top time again at Stafford

It is time for box top collecting again! The children at Stafford Elementary are being asked to collect box tops. The box tops will be counted once every six weeks. They will be collected by each grade (Pre-school through 6th grade) and every six weeks the grade that collects the most box tops will win a “Box Top Party” sponsored by one of the local businesses.

Whack-A-Car is a hit

Well, apparently it is a lot of fun to hit an object with a sledge hammer. It doesn’t matter if you are male or female. Just ask the students at Italy High School.

Italy spirit and excitement growing

Gladiator fever has hit and is definitely evident around town. You know when you drive down Main Street that it is Homecoming week because of the displays on the merchant’s windows. Shiny gold bows also have been tied around posts to boost spirit.

Italy ISD to review FIRST rating and TRE results

Tonight, the board of directors will conduct a public hearing to review and take comments on Italy ISD’s rating from FIRST — Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. In a regular meeting the directors will recognize Melissa Bedard as Employee of the Month; review academic, financial and enrollment reports; and look at the Tax Rollback Election (TRE) results. Personnel considerations will include the appointment of Athletic Director and Business Manager. The board will also consider changing the meeting place for board meetings. The public hearing will begin at 6:45 p.m. and the regular board meeting at 7 p.m. in the Italy Administration building at 300 South College. All are welcome to attend.

Friday morning in the Stafford Elementary gym, the bleachers were packed with proud parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. And proud they should be! Miss Maevers said there were more awards given out this time then any other time she can remember.

IHS 9th grade has fundraiser

Homecoming in Italy is October 24 and not only is it a time for tradition, alumni, crowns and bragging rights, it is a time for fundraising — and is this a good one. Think Christmas gift.

Local scholarship fundraiser

The George Scott Memorial Scholarship Dinner will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008 from 5-7 p.m. The dinner will be held in the high school cafeteria at 300 S. College Street prior to the Homecoming game against Wortham.

Stiles leads meeting for community leaders

The Italy City Council, the School Board of Trustees, Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and Italy Fire District held a joint meeting Monday evening, Oct. 6. Mark Stiles, president of the EDC, said all the entities in the community needed to work together to better the community. He said the city and school were lucky to have those on the council and school board. “You are doing a job nobody else wanted,” he pointed out.

Parent nominations for gifted and talented students

Italy ISD offers services to gifted and talented students in a variety of formats. If you student is not currently identified as gifted and talented, and you believe that your child shows these tendencies, then you may nominate him/her for the screening process which is divided into three elements: standardized test of mental ability, teacher judgment based on observation and characteristics, and standardized achievement test scores (if available).

Agenda: EDC will meet with Italy ISD

Monday, October 6, Italy’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) will be meeting with Italy’s Independent School District board. An EDC presentation will be given by Mark Stiles, followed by a question and answer period for all attendees. This portion of the joint meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers of the Italy Municipal Building at 101 Main Street. All are welcome to attend.

Jungle Safari for books at Stafford Elementary Book Fair

Every year Stafford Elementary puts on a book fair to encourage students to read. This year’s book fair was a Jungle Book Safari theme. Everywhere you went you could hear wonderful music and everywhere you looked you saw children with their parents picking out lots of books. Not only does this encourage reading but it also provides family time.

If you have attended any Gladiator football game this year, you probably noticed a group of young men that stand out among the crowd. They are young; however, that does not stop acts of pride and loyalty to their school from shining through. The young men are none other than “ITALY PRIDE”, freshman from Italy High School with an idea they would like to convey.

Italy ISD has a new website and a new Technology Director

With the hiring of the new technology director, Kevin Witte, Italy ISD boasts a new website. If you take a quick peek, you might think it’s kind of fancy and easily readable. "We are now using a Content Management System which allows us to easily input and control a variety of information and school news by multiple authors, managers and publishers.

Agenda: Italy ISD called meeting addresses surplus property

Monday, September 22, the Italy ISD board will hold a called meeting. A public forum will be followed by administrative and financial reports. Two surplus vehicles will be discussed and insurance through the TASB will be up for approval. The last item of business on the agenda is personnel considerations. The meeting will be at 5 p.m. in High School Band Hall at 300 South College Street. All are welcome to attend.
