Learning to overcome adversity

David Nance is no stranger to adversity or illness. Growing up as a child, his family did not have much money so he learned very early that anything worth having was worth working for and to have it you had to work for it. He also learned the hard way from personal experience that life can deal some difficult blows.

National Nursing Home Week at Trinity Mission

Almost everyday this past week Trinity Mission had something special for the residents in honor of National Nursing Home Week. National Nursing Home Week focuses on nursing home residents and staff and encourages all to celebrate those that make a positive difference in their lives every day. A supportive and caring environment, such as a nursing home, provides enrichment for residents and families to continue growing, learning and teaching.

IHS Athletic Banquet planning meeting scheduled

On Monday, May 16th, the parents and fans of Italy High School athletes will meet at the Italy High School Library. Meeting time is set for 6:00. Plans for the athletic banquet, scheduled for Monday, May 23rd, will be finalized. All supporters of Italy High School athletics are welcomed to attend.

Lions and Tigers and Bears and a Crocodile-Oh My

As you walked into the cafeteria at Stafford Elementary you would have been scared if you didn’t know that all those wild animals were just our cute first graders putting on their annual “Deep in the Jungle” program. Everywhere you looked you were surrounded by lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, cheetahs, crocodiles and even elephants.

Agenda: Italy ISD School Board Meetings, May 17, 2011

The Italy ISD Board of Trustees will have two meetings on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. At 5:00pm the board will meet to canvas votes from the May 14th election followed by a regular monthly meeting at 7:00pm. The 5:00pm meeting will be held in the IISD Administration office and the 7:00pm meeting will be held in the Italy High School band hall. Both meeting locations are at the Italy High School Campus at 300 S. College, Italy.

Letter to the Editor: Ethics in rural water supply companies

The problems we are encountering in this country did not begin in Washington DC. Unfortunately they began in the smallest of towns and communities across this country. If we could restore the ethics from the ground up, then the United States of America might be able to stop the cliff we are getting so close to falling off of.

Missing campaign signs

Over the last few weeks, if you drive around Italy, you would see signs announcing the candidacy of several people. Candidates ask permission to place their signs in yards all over town. Several years ago, Italy Neotribune did an article about the legality of such signs. 

Obituary: Emily Orrline Martin, 1922 – 2011

Emily Orrline “Sweetheart” Martin, age 88, of Italy passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 at her home. She was born September 7, 1922 in Italy, Texas to George and Hatti (Varner) Green. Orrline married Aubrey Dale Martin on October 6, 1945. She had been a member of the Central Baptist Church for 72 years.

Burn ban lifted

Due to recent soaking rains, as well as the need of many residents to safely and efficiently dispose of downed trees and other plant debris after the storms, Commissioners voted unanimously to rescind a ban on outdoor burning approved at the April 26 meeting.

This is where my heart is

Beverly Cox went to Baylor University and graduated with a degree in interior design. She did her internship and decided interior design was not for her. She tried working with her Dad in his brokerage business and was still not satisfied. Then she decided to get her teaching certificate in alternative education and now knows this is where her heart is. She now is the CBI (community based instruction) teacher at Stafford Elementary.

Elias Perez Student of the Year

Elias Perez has been working at Trinity Mission as a physical therapy assistant while going to school at Navarro College and has earned his degree in Occupational Therapy. Recently he was awarded the ‘Student of the Year’ award.

Saturday, May 7th the Ellis County Art Museum was honoring Shelley Nance’s memory by having an art show of her artwork. The place was over flowing with people viewing her wonderful artwork. People came and went all evening until 8:00 pm.

Citizens’ Advisory Board on Redistricting held first meeting

Having grown rapidly during the last decade – from 111,360 in the 2000 Census to 149,610 in the 2010 Census – Ellis County must draw new lines for its commissioner precincts. The redistricting process must adhere first to the Constitutional provision for equal protection – commonly referred to as “One Man, One Vote” – but must also meet the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Meals-on-Wheels Welcomes Volunteer Coordinator

Lisa Gordon is one of the newest members of Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties, serving as the Ellis County Volunteer Coordinator, serving all communities county-wide. Ms. Gordon joined the Meals-on-Wheels team last August. Her past professional experience includes providing case management to families and children at Texas Baptist Home and Catholic Charities of Fort Worth.

Italy’s own in the Waxahachie Community Theatre production of Annie

Waxahachie Community Theatre will present “Annie” starring Meredith Johnson as Annie, Jerry Ellis as Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks, Deborah Pappas as Miss Hannigan, and Randy Preston as “Rooster.” Italy will be represented in the production by the entire Clark family, Gary and Nan and daughters Sydney Lowenthal (3rd grader at Stafford Elementary) and Erika Larsen.

Methodist Bake Sale

First United Methodist Church of Italy is hosting a bake sale on Friday, May 6 from 7:00am until ?. The sale will be held downtown Italy in front of the South Ellis County Water Department. Proceeds will go towards the Lord’s Acre.

The 2011 Tour d’Italia and Summer Fest is right around the corner and will be here before we know it. Every year, the Tour d’Italia raises funds which benefit Italy High School, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and other North Texas charities. This year, the Tour d’Italia enters its 26th year and it will be bigger and better than ever!

Obituary: Bettye L. Thompson 1927 – 2011

Bettye L. Thompson, age 83, of Italy, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011 at Baylor Medical Center of Waxahachie. She was born July 10, 1927 in Frost, Texas to Lewis Franklin and Ocie Eline (Moore) Neel. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Italy and the Eastern Star. Bettye was a loving wife, sister and aunt.

Local Library Hosts Egg Hunt

Dunlap Library held its 28th annual Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, April 23. Children up to age 10 were allowed to hunt for candy filled and prize filled eggs.

Fifth Six Weeks P.A.W.S. Assembly

Can you believe it? It is already the fifth six weeks of school. One more six weeks before school is out for the summer. But the students have stepped up their pace and once again did themselves proud with their good grades and over all accomplishments.

A surprise diagnosis and fight for survival

In the summer of 2005, Leddie Lackey of Maypearl was excited to have the summer off. She was raising her two children on her Teacher’s Aide salary, so big elaborate vacations were not in her plans. She had the summer off from her job, so she planned a road trip with her best friend, Jill Talamantez, to Minnesota to visit Jill’s family.

Italy ISD is awarded a grant targeted at loss prevention

(Austin) – Italy ISD has been awarded a loss prevention grant of $1500 from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Risk Management Fund. Grant monies help implement loss prevention and safety initiatives to raise awareness of safety issues and reduce the potential for property losses and on-the-job injuries. This award is part of $550,000 in grants the Fund gave this year to 211 Texas school districts and educational entities. Since 1998, the Fund’s Loss Prevention Grant Program has distributed 1,992 total grants of more than $5 million to Fund members in the workers; compensation and property/liability programs.

Upcoming elections for Milford and Italy

Important elections are coming up May 14, 2011 for the Italy and Milford communities. Italy voters have crucial decisions to make in both the mayoral and school board elections as well as a proposition. In Milford there are two council positions needing to be filled.

“What You Haven’t Been Told About Dinosaurs”

Brian Thomas of the Institute for Creation Research will show five facts about dinosaurs, most of which are not widely known and could change popular conceptions of earth history. One of the most effective teraching tools that contrasts the evoluntionary versus Bible-based views uses a discussion of dinosaurs.

Meals-on-Wheels Receives Van from Caesar’s Foundation

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties accepted a new meal delivery van from the Caesar’s Foundation on Thursday, April 14. This new van is to aid in the Senior Nutrition Program, delivering meals to seniors in need. A brief presentation with local elected officials, current and former Meals-on-Wheels Board members, and volunteers were present.

Easter Sunrise Service

The sun was rising and the sound of glorious singing filled the air. The Italy Ministerial Alliance hosted the Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday at Dripping Springs, a local ranch. Many of the churches in town came together as one heart, one voice to celebrate the holy day.

Mayor’s Egg Hunt a success

The Easter Bunny made an appearance at the Upchurch Field on Saturday much to the delight of over 125 children of Italy. Special Delivery in the Italy Fire Department’s fire truck, E.B. came to help with the festivities. Hiding eggs is his specialty and this time was no different.

Senior night at the baseball field

With one last district game in which to compete, the Italy Gladiators played their last home game on Friday night at Loyd Davidson Field. They took on Clifton but that wasn’t the most important part. The last home game is over and the seniors are taking a step towards the next stage of their life.
