Public Input Critical to Redistricting

Redistricting is a word seldom used, except once every ten years. On Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at 6:30 p.m., the public is encouraged to attend a public hearing on redistricting in the Commissioners’ Courtroom on the 2nd floor of the Historic Ellis County Courthouse on the square in downtown Waxahachie.

Local business man heads to Joplin

On May 22, 2011, the citizens of Joplin, Missouri experienced the change of a lifetime. A tornado with up to and beyond 200 miles an hour winds devastated 1/3 of their fair city. The devastation included a local nursing home, a hospital and approximately 7000 homes and businesses, losing 155 lives according to the Joplin Globe, June 21, 2011.

“No Refusal” Weekend to target DWI this 4th of July holiday

To combat the problem of intoxicated drivers on Texas roads a statewide No Refusal Program is underway this 4th of July holiday. As part of that program, the Ellis County & District Attorney’s Office and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, working with all Ellis County law enforcement agencies, are coordinating a local no refusal effort.

County Judge Declares State of Disaster

Just over a week after a grass fire consumed over 230 acres in two counties (Ellis and Dallas), destroying one home and five vehicles as well as damaging 12 other structures, County Judge Carol Bush has issued a declaration of disaster including the prohibition of the use of fireworks.            

A Bang Up Job on the 4th of July

Consider the facts. The Burn Ban is almost state-wide, county-wide for sure, and the 4th of July is just around the corner. Safety is always a key point during this holiday. Instead of raiding a local fireworks stand, which might be illegal, and blasting the countryside with potential fire danger, let’s all go to the safe fireworks shows already scheduled.

Water project discussed at called City Council Meeting

Last night at a called Italy City Council meeting the question was asked, “How long will our water system last?” Dean Carrell (Public Works Director) tried to answer this question with a power point presentation and explained how some equipment just didn’t work any more, how there were too many repairs being done to the point where they will not be able to be repaired again.

Kennon Bridges new Marketing Director for Trinity Mission

Kennon Bridges always knew he wanted to be involved with helping people. Being a pastor’s son gave him an insight into people’s needs and the opportunity to visit nursing homes, see his father help the residents and help enrich their lives. It was just natural that he would choose working in the health care field as his career, what better way to help people. And his position of director of marketing is a perfect fit at Trinity Mission.

Obituary: Lee Roy Finley, Jr., 1932 – 2011

Lee Roy Finley, Jr., age 78, passed away in Italy on Thursday, June 23, 2011. He was born in Italy on July 25, 1932 to Ruby Nell (Countryman) and Lee Roy Finley, Sr. Lee Roy married Marcia Pearl Windham on March 23, 1957 in Italy. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 647, Shriners, had served as the volunteer Fire Chief in Italy, owned and operated Italy Texaco for 15 years, and was a life time member of the Central Baptist Church. 

Youth on a Mission

First United Methodist Churches of Italy and Frost sent their junior high and senior high youth to Oakdale, Louisiana June 12-18th for an organized labor of love.

Letter to the Editor: Italy city water supply concerns

I stopped by City Hall and expressed my concerns to Mayor Jackson on Monday since I would be out of town on Tuesday and could not make the Italy EDC meeting.  While I appreciate that some of the citizens would like a community center, I feel that the Italy Economic Development Corporation needs to take a step back and consider some issues that are more vital to our future economic development. 

1st Annual Summerfest in Italy

On Saturday, Italy hosted the 1st Annual Summerfest that included a snow cone vendor, as well as wonderful smoked BBQ. Turkey legs, sausage-on-a-stick and sandwiches were included on the Summerfest menu—all that and a bag of chips.

Wedding of the Century

Megann Lewis and Andrew Harlow were married on Saturday, May 21, 2011.  It was a sight to behold and the crowd went away with song in their heart and happy memories of a beautiful wedding.

I would do it all over again

James Bell is now eighty-eight years old and calls Trinity Mission his home. But the day he found out the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 he wanted to join the the Marine Corp. He was eighteen years old.  Iwo Jima became his home for a while.

Ban declared on outdoor burning and sale of certain fireworks

In a regularly-scheduled meeting on Monday, June 13, Ellis County Commissioners declared a ban on outdoor burning and issued an order prohibiting the sale or use of restricted fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Ellis County. This prohibition includes professional fireworks displays, although individual cities may make different rulings for displays within city limits.

Letter to the Editor: Community Center Bricks

Just an idea, why not sell the bricks from the old Community Center? Some residence of Italy may be sentimental about those bricks.  The money made from the brick sales could go towards the new Community Center or beautification of Italy.  I would be a brick buyer!

Milford Farmers Market begins Saturday, June 18th

With a desire to make healthy eating more convenient for our community the Milford Titus Women has developed the Milford Farmers Market.  Beginning Saturday, June 18th, the market will run Saturdays through October 15th from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Milford Park in downtown Milford, Texas.
