Stafford Elementary and the Italy Ministerial Alliance have teamed up to help kids and families with food for over the weekends. Every Thursday teams from local churches come and stuff backpacks with food at Stafford Elementary.

Obituary: Willie Rebecca Inman, 1936 — 2011

Willie Rebecca Inman, age 75 a resident of Italy, passed away on September 16, 2011 in Dallas, Texas. Willie was born May 12, 1936 in Italy, Texas to Walter R. and Viola (Embry) Shrader.  Willie was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Italy for many years. She was an avid reader and loved to play dominos and bingo.

National Rehabilitation Awareness Week at Trinity Mission

Donna Gay Stanglin, age 64, of Denison, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2011 at her home.  She was born February 13, 1947 in Waxahachie to Dale and Orrline (Green) Martin. Donna was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Obituary: Mary Alice Boyd, 1921 – 2011

Mary Alice Boyd, age 90, of Italy, Texas passed away, Saturday, September 17, 2011. Mary was born in Italy, Texas on August 30, 1921 to I.G. and Ruthie (Jones) Harris. She was a lifelong member of Park Presbyterian Church in Italy, where she also served as the church secretary.

Principal Lee Joffre joins Italy ISD and Avalon ISD’s CBI class

Friday at David’s Supermarket you could see some very skilled shoppers making their way through the store. They were the CBI students from Italy High School and Avalon High School with Lee Joffre (Italy High School principal). They were busy hunting down various items on their shopping list.

The attached TEA brochures were submitted by one of our readers for the benefit of all parents of school age children.  The STAAR testing program is a end of course testing system that will begin with this year’s high school freshmen down through elementary age students.  

Agenda: Italy ISD School Board Meeting, September 19, 2011

The Italy ISD Board of Trustees will have their regular monthly meeting on Monday, September 19, 2011. Meeting time is set for 7:00pm and will be held in the Italy ISD Band Hall at 300 S. College, Italy.  The agenda includes an item to consider/approve a resolution sanctioning 4-H as an extracurricular activity. See the agenda for a complete list of action items the board will be considering.

Italy students gather to commemorate the tragedy of September 11, 2001

We all know the sadness that took place ten years ago on September 11th. We know that terrorists attacked our wonderful country, the United States of America. Four planes were hijacked in mid flight. Two of the planes were flown into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City and caused them to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. and the fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In all, nearly three thousand people were killed in the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Wrap up on Ike Road fire in Ellis County

As of 6 p.m. the fire along Ike Road in Ellis County is 100 percent contained, with an estimated 250 acres burned.  While 20 homes were threatened, necessitating the temporary evacuation of 20 families, all the structures have been saved and families are being allowed back into the area.  All roads are now open to through traffic.             

Parent Nomination for Gifted/Talented at Italy ISD

Italy ISD offers services to gifted and talented students in a variety of formats.  If your student is not currently identified as gifted and talented, and you believe that your child shows these tendencies, then you may nominate him/her for the screening process which is divided into three elements: standardized test of mental ability, teacher judgment based on observation and characteristics, and standardized achievement test scores (if available).

Italy High School CB&I class visits Trinity Mission

Teresa Young, the CB&I teacher for Italy High School, is really enjoying her job. Last year she was the CB&I teacher for Stafford Elementary. With her new position at the high school, teaching life skills is a big part of her job. Every Friday Mrs.Young and her class go around the community and do volunteer work. This Friday they were at Trinity Mission.

The Italy City Council will have their monthly meeting on Monday, September 12, 2011. The meeting will be held at the Council Chambers, 105 Main Street, Italy. Meeting time is 6:30pm.  The council members will have a full night ahead of them. The agenda slates a public hearing regarding the 2011-2012 annual operating budget along with thirteen regular agenda items.

Volleyball Varsity Takes A Win

On Tuesday night, the dome was full of spirit and plain ol’ hard work. The Lady Gladiator Varsity led their team to victory against the Malokoff Lady Tigers with finesse and strategic planning. In four sets, the Lady Gladiators showed Malakoff how they planned to run the season. The games scores were Italy 25-Malakoff-21; Malakoff 25-Italy 22; Italy 25-Malakoff 13 and Italy 25-Malakoff 14.

Get Ready, Set, Golf!: Meals-on-Wheels Plans for Annual Benefit

With fall temperatures finally here, Meals-on-Wheels is ready for its 24th Annual Golf Benefit set for September 15 at Hidden Creek Golf Course in Burleson. This event is one of the largest in the area with over 200 golfers and many volunteers participating. Bringing in over $75,000, the Golf Benefit proceeds directly support Meals-on-Wheels services.

Everyone has been hearing about all the fires around our wonderful state of Texas. We have heard how the city of Bastrop has really been hit hard, lots of homes have been lost to the fires. And we sort of think only about the homes that have been lost and forget or don’t focus on the fact that most everything in the homes have been lost too. Like mementos, furniture, towels, clothing, all the basic necessities. Well, Avalon ISD decided to help the students in need of clothing at Bastrop ISD by collecting blue jeans.

Stafford Elementary plans 9/11 Remembrance Service

Stafford Elementary principal, Jason Miller, is requesting the community attend “We Remember…9/11.” This solemn service will be held at the flag pole on Stafford Elementary’s front lawn on Monday, September 12 at 8:46am.  The Stafford students will recite the pledges and recognize a moment of silence as a sign of unity at the flag pole. They are asking that everyone wear the colors Red, White, or Blue.

ECEYA Horse Show Fun and Playday

The Ellis County Equine Youth Association invites all area horse kids to participate in the ECEYA Fundraiser and Fun Horse Show on Saturday, September 10, at the Flying Dollar Ranch in Italy, Texas. The show begins at 9 a.m. and includes halter, western, English, leadline and speed events.

Skeet Shoot sponsored by an Ellis County 4H Club

Stafford Elementary 4th grader Hunter Hinz and his fellow members of the Ellis County Shooting Sports 4-H Club would like to invite shotgun enthusiasts to compete in their 4-H Fun Shoot Fundraiser on Saturday, September 17th. Come out and support this 4-H club and bust some clays at the Ellis County Sportsman’s Club located at 470 West Sterrett Road in Waxahachie. Registration begins at 8 am, followed by a mandatory safety review at 8:30 am, and competition gets underway at 9am.
