The Italy High School junior class is having a Halloween Party for 6th, 7th and 8th grade Italy ISD students. There will be lots of activities, food, games, and music. Costumes are not required but welcomed as there will be a costume contest in the mix of all of the other activities planned throughout the evening.
The mighty Italy Gladiators defeat the Leon Cougars and are just two wins away from being crowned the district champs with the Axtell Longhorns coming to town.

Thomas Bryan Harvey, age 78, of Whitney, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2011 at his residence. He was born February 14, 1933 in Italy, Texas, son of the late John Bryan and Lois Cora Hearn Harvey. Thomas grew up and attended schools in Italy and graduated from Italy High School in 1950.
Dennis Edward “Denny” Whiteaker, Jr., age 47, of The Colony, passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at his home. He was born November 21, 1963 in Midland, Texas to Carolyn (Price) and Dennis Edward Whiteaker, Sr. He had worked in the air conditioning industry for 25 years. Denny married Rachel Suckling on October 2, 1982. He was a member of the Lakeway Baptist Church in The Colony. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid sports fan, who more than anything loved the Longhorns.

The Italy Economic Development Corporation voted to move forward with the third phase of the downtown improvement project by redirecting initial plans to build a new community center to purchasing an existing building located at 161 W. Main Street for the same purpose.

Tuesday night the storm was erupting inside the dome, as Italy took on the Rio Vista Eagles in volleyball. The clouds rolled in and the thunder crashed. The Lady Gladiators sent lightning bolts across the net and electrified the Lady Eagles right where they stood.
Did you ever wish the trains still ran in Italy? You could just buy a ticket, put your car keys away and be transported to your doctors appointment or to a restaurant for a meal or go shopping and not have to drive. Well, the trains of course aren’t running here but there is a new service available for Italy, Milford and surrounding towns. It is the Community Transit Service out of Corsicana, Texas.

The 8th grade Lady Gladiators hosted Whitney this week at the dome. The Lady Gladiators tangled with the Lady Wildcats for three games. When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, Italy 8th grade was the conqueror.

The Italy School Board of Trustees received good news Monday night when Barry Bassett, superintendent, announced the district had earned a superior achievement rating with the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas for the 2009-2010 school year.

The Italy Gladiator Regiment Band will complete in their regional marching competition at LaVega High School on Wednesday, October 19 at 2:45pm. Both the Italy High School and Stafford Elementary campuses will have a send-off assembly Wednesday morning at 8:30am as the renowned band heads off to compete in this event. Gladiator Boosters met Sunday evening and voted to move forward with the purchase of two new video cameras for the athletic department. The boosters also made plans to have flags and discounted tshirts available at this Thursday’s Jr High and JV football games against Leon.

Billy Gene Burton, Sr., age 81, of Italy, passed away early Friday morning, October 14, 2011 in Italy. He was born March 14, 1930 in Whitney to Marion Leslie and Roxie (Gregory) Burton. He had been a longtime resident of Irving. Billy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved having the family all together. Billy enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
If George Scott could have been at the Italy High School cafeteria Friday night I think he would have been proud. There were many graduates of Italy High School there, young and old eating BBQ to raise money for the George Scott Scholarship. There were even some recipients of the scholarship there helping to serve dinner, giving back what was given to them.
The Italy ISD Board of Trustees will have Board Training session followed by a regular monthly meeting on Monday, October 17, 2011. The Board Training will begin at 6:00pm and will be held in the Italy ISD Administration Office. The regular monthly meeting will follow at 7:00pm and will be held in the Italy High School Band Hall. Both meeting locations are the High School campus at 300 S. College Street, Italy.
The superintendent of Italy ISD, Barry Bassett, welcomes everyone to a community breakfast to be held Saturday, October 15th at 8:30am in the Italy High School cafeteria. Mr. Bassett wants parents and community members to be a part of a collaborative team to help achieve success within the school district and subsequently the community.

Senior, Megan Richards, was crowned Italy High School Homecoming Queen on Friday night during the half-time festivities. Richards is the daughter of Tina and Allen Richards of Italy.
The Lady Gladiators stood tall and proud last Tuesday as they took on the Lady Zebras from Grandview. With excellent response at the net, IHS protected and gave Grandview something to think about. The Lady Gladiators have strength and know how to use it.

Italy’s JV Gladiators score an impressive win against Blooming Grove on Thursday while the Jr. High Gladiators continue to impress coaches and fans.
The Italy Lions Club will be taking water and Gatorade donations for the Italy Fire Department as well as canned food donations for the Italy Ministerial Alliance at every home football game for the remainder of the season.
The Italy City Council refinanced its 2002 bond Monday night at its monthly council meeting reducing the interest rate from 5.39 percent to 2.39 percent.
The whole town was buzzing on Friday as the IHS Homecoming parade made its way up the streets and around the town. With the band, cheerleaders and the football team, the parade concluded with a pep rally on Main Street. All the cheerleading squads and football teams from every age group surrounded the Gladiators with support and spirit.
Highway 77 was temporarily shutdown as Italy’s Homecoming Parade made its way from the IHS campus and then down main street followed by a pep rally in the heart of Gladiator territory.
