Budget Process Continues

Ellis County Commissioners took the next step in the annual budget process during their regularly-scheduled meeting on Monday, August 22, by taking a record vote regarding the tax rate for fiscal year 2011-2012.

Local Pastor Predicts Winter Coming Soon

A local pastor shocked her congregation recently by predicting that “Winter is coming, and not a moment too soon, on August 27th and 28th!”  There was a collective sigh of relief when she went on to explain that renowned Biblical Dramatist Mark Winter, of One Man Show Ministries (www.onemanshow.org) will be traveling to our neck of the woods this coming weekend, to kick off the “Back to School/Back to Church” weekend of celebrations at both Italy and Frost United Methodist Churches.

Italy has new Animal Control Officer

Shelbee Landon joined the Italy Police Department August 1 as Animal Control Officer and Code Enforcement Officer.  Shelbee is also part-time Animal Control Officer for the Hillsboro Police Department.

Avalon Elementary Meet the Teacher Night

Last Thursday evening the Avalon Elementary was filled with enthusiastic students as they came to meet their teachers for the first time. They were carrying everything they needed to be ready for school to start on the following Monday. So many smiles and laughter could be seen and heard all down the hallways.

Stafford Elementary Meet the Teacher Night

The sidewalk leading up to the doorway at Stafford Elementary was lined up with students and parents ready to meet the teachers during last Thursday’s “Meet the Teach Night.” Students, teachers and parents are ready for the new school year to begin and of course that begins with meeting the teachers.

Central Baptist Church Cookbook Fundraiser

Central Baptist Church in Italy is producing a cookbook to raise money to purchase a new people mover. The cookbook will be a three-ring binder and feature recipes from some of the church’s best cooks, past and present.

Constable’s Office honored

Constable Terry Nay and Deputy Constable Brad Elliott were recognized in Commissioners’ Court on Monday morning for their part in the EPA Regional Emissions Enforcement program Achievement Award received by the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

Annie Mae Gonerway of Italy passed. A Wake service on Friday August 12, 2011 from 7pm to 8pm in Community Funeral Home Edgar Thomas Chapel.  Funeral service Saturday August 13, 2011 11am at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Italy. Service under the direction of Community Funeral Home and Florist.

Italy HS Back-to-School Bash planned for August 11

Italy High School Principal, Lee Joffre, is inviting all Italy High School students (9th grade thru 12 grade) to attend the Back-to-School Bash.  The event is planned for Thursday, August 11, 5:00pm-9:00pm and will be held at the Lewis residence at 871 Stafford Road just south of Italy.  There will be food and fun in a backyard party designed as a meet and greet for the students and their new principal.

Italy ISD Registration Information for New and Returning Students

Registration dates for Italy ISD have been set for the week of August 8, 2011. These registration dates pertain to new students for both Stafford Elementary and the Italy High/Junior High School and will then conclude with registration for existing Italy High/Junior High School students. All new student registration will take place at the Italy High School Campus, 300 College Street. Please read over the following information carefully to ensure what date your student needs to register.

Lady Gladiators to play in Abbott Varsity Tournament

After two home games scheduled for this week, the Lady Gladiators’ varsity squad will then travel to Abbott for the 2011 Abbott Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, August 13.  Their first game will be at noon against Keene. Beat the heat on Saturday and make the trek to Abbott and show your support.

The Italy City Council will have its regular monthly meeting today, Monday, August 8, 2011.  Meeting time is slated for 6:30pm and will be held in the council chambers at 105 West Main Street, Italy.  Agenda items include naming a replacement for the recently resigned council member, Mark Souder, Sr.

Dow Anna McGregor grew up volunteering. Her mother, Francis Dunaway McGregor volunteered at hospitals, nursing homes, churches and people’s homes. So it was just natural that Dow Anna McGregor would follow in her footsteps.
