With one six-weeks down and five to go there is much to do for Italy High School’s 2012 graduating class. Mrs. Davis, Italy High School Counselor, will be conducting senior interviews this month. Mrs. Davis will discuss with each senior what they need to graduate and discuss their future plans after graduation.

Italy High School Cheerleaders host IYAA Cheer Camp

In cooperation with IYAA Cheerleading (Italy Youth Athletic Association), the Italy High School Cheerleaders and their cheer sponsor, Clover Stiles, recently hosted the IYAA Cheer Camp, a private clinic and a fundraiser for the IHS Cheerleaders held inside the Italy Gladiator Coliseum.

The sophomore class of Italy High School invites everyone to come take a swing at their spirit car.  The car, donated by Martin Towing of Waxahachie located off of Hwy 77, is painted up and ready to be destroyed.  For a dollar the sophomores will hand you a sledge hammer and let you take your best shot!!! Help close out spirit week and join in the fun.

Italy National Night Out

Italy’s National Night Out Event was held on Tuesday, October 4th. And this year Italy went all out. They had free hot dogs for everyone, games, a bounce house and even a band.

There were lots and lots of people, booths, a band, a dunking booth and fun galore at Milford’s National Night Out celebration Tuesday evening.

2011 IHS Homecoming schedule of events

IHS Homecoming 2011 is Friday, October 7. Both Italy ISD campuses will be releasing early on Friday so everyone can join in on the celebration.  A last minute change to the schedule—the Italy Gladiator Regiment Band will perform their halftime show before the game (7:00pm).  This change is due to the need of more time during halftime for the homecoming court presentations.

On Monday, October 3rd, 2011 a little after 8:00pm, the Italy Police Department assisted the Texas Department of Public Safety after they were in a vehicle pursuit on I-35E and crashed the vehicle near Chambers Road and I-35E just north of Italy. The occupants ran on foot from the vehicle. The Italy Police Department assisted by setting up a perimeter along the northern border of Italy while the Ellis County SO and DPS searched the ground. None of the occupants of the vehicle were found during the search. Guns and narcotics were found in the vehicle left behind by the suspects.

With the first six weeks of school complete and homecoming week in progress I wanted to pause and write a personal letter of thanks for the support Italy Independent School District receives from parents, grandparents, and community members.  Additionally we offer special thanks for the trust we are afforded in providing a safe and effective learning environment in which each student can reach their full potential. 

Code Red Message – Magnablend Fire

An EPA emergency response team has been on the scene of the Magnablend Central Facility fire in Waxahachie, Texas and is assisting local and state officials.  EPA is continuing to conduct ground level air monitoring. Additional initial air monitoring data from over night and early morning using ground level portable sampling devices continued to not show elevated toxic chemicals. EPA will share results with the public as soon as possible.

Italy High School Homecoming court announced

Homecoming is a time honored tradition. Italy High School has scheduled this week to be Homecoming and festivities will culminate with a football challenge between the Gladiators and the Blooming Grove on Friday night at Willis Field. Game begins at 7:30.

Tax increase approved

Using language required pursuant to Texas Tax Code Section 26.05(b), Commissioner Bill Dodson, pct. 2, made the following motion to set the tax rate for Ellis County for fiscal year 2011-2012:

The City of Italy Park Board will have their monthly meeting today, Tuesday, October 4, 2011. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Italy Municipal Building at 105 West Main Street, Italy. Meeting time is 5:30pm. The agenda slates the Christmas Festival as the lone planning session item.

Lee Joffre: New Man on the Scene

There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Joffre. The new Italy High School principal came to us from the James Coble Middle School in Mansfield, in which he was the Assistant Principal. Teaching two years in 5th grade and then promoted to high school teaching math.

2011 IHS Homecoming parade entries sought

Italy High School Homecoming 2011 is fast approaching (Friday, October 7 vs Blooming Grove). With that in mind, homecoming parade organizers are working tirelessly with area merchants, clubs and others to make this year’s parade a huge success. Mary Dawn Matthews Cope, age 86, of Richardson, Texas passed away Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Methodist Richardson Medical Center.  She was born May 17, 1925 in Italy, Texas to O.M. and Arvie (Eason) Matthews.  

County Budget Approved for 2011/2012

After two public hearings, one regarding the proposed ad valorem tax rate and another regarding the budget for fiscal year 2011/2012, Ellis County Commissioners narrowly approved a budget that will require a two-cent tax rate increase.

Ethan Grey Schmidt Born

Ethan Schmidt, son of Italy native Rachel Stevens and Nathan Schmidt of Buda, Texas was born Thursday, September 15, 2011 in Austin at Seton Southwest Hospital. Little Ethan weighed 8lbs, 1oz and was 21" long.

Perhaps the ISD should pay a little more attention to teaching history instead of band. The school board should have been shocked by the lack of knowledge displayed by the students and either the lack of knowledge or the misrepresentation by a teacher. And I am shocked by the lack of knowledge by the School Board.

National Date Commemorated; Local Firemen Honored

September 11, 2001 was a day remembered all over the nation. People of all walks of life lost their lives in a tragedy that surrounded our country in turmoil. However, in the midst of this remembrance, celebrations occurred all over the nation—celebrations of life.

4-H’ers from around Texas came together in Waxahachie on Saturday, September 17, at the Ellis County Sportsman’s Club to compete in the Ellis County Shooting Sports 4-H Club Fun Shoot. Participants in the shotgun fundraiser event competed in 100 rounds of skeet and trap as well as fun games such as “Snipe” and “Wolf Chase.”
