Join Chick-fil-A for A Spirit Day benefiting the family of Donavan Lusk

On Monday, January 16th from 6am to 10pm Chick-fil-A in Waxahachie will donate a portion of their profits to the Donovan Lusk Memorial Fund. It is really easy, go eat there, by either dining in or drive thru. When you pay hand your receipt back to the employee, and tell them it’s for Donovan Lusk. They will do the rest. At the end of the night they will total all receipts and donate the 15% of your purchase to the Donovan Lusk Memorial Fund.

Three city council seats up for May election

Three council seats are up for election, according to Teri Murdock, city secretary/administrator, at the Italy City Council’s monthly meeting held Monday evening. Those seats are currently held by James Hobbs, Dennis Perkins Jr. and Bruce Utley.

“Volunteers for Democracy Day”

During the 80th legislative session, SB 393 declared the second Tuesday in January as “Volunteers for Democracy Day” to recognize the tens of thousands of Texans “who make valuable contributions to the nation’s democratic system.”

The City of Italy Planning and Zoning Board will have a called meeting Tuesday, January 10, 2012. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Italy Municipal Building at 105 West Main Street, Italy. Meeting time is 5:00pm. The agenda slates there will be discussion of a variance request by T.W. Howell, Developer for Family Dollar Stores.

Date set for next Gladiator Band Boosters meeting

The Boosters of the Italy Gladiator Regiment band will meet on Monday, January 9, 2012.  There will be an in-depth discussion and planning session for the upcoming fundraiser in February as well as candy sales.  It is important that all the band students have parent representation at this meeting.  Meeting time and location is 6:30pm in the IHS band hall.

Community-wide men’s fellowship chili dinner

The second annual Men and Boys Community Chili Dinner took place at the Cornerstone on Wednesday night at 6:30 pm. Several churches throughout the town were represented. Family Fellowship Church, First Baptist Church of Italy, and Central Baptist Church all had church members attend the dinner. Murray Wainscott was in charge of putting it together and he did a great job.

The council will discuss and consider necessary action(s) regarding Resolution R11-0105-01A, a Resolution approving a program of the Italy Economic Development Corporation, Inc.; approving a resolution of the Corporation authorizing the issuance and sale of sales tax revenue bonds by the Corporation; approving a sales tax remittance agreement; and enacting other provisions relating to the subject.

Obituary: Elva McConnell, 1925 – 2012

Elva McConnell, age 86, of Italy, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie.  She was born July 25, 1925 in Lewisville, Texas to Newton Payne and Zula Mae (Nowlin) Gentry. She had been married to Zack McConnell for 66 years before his death in 2009.

My mother, Beverly Carter is a resident of Trinity Mission in Italy, Texas. While we were putting away the Christmas decorations in her room, I noticed there were more decorations to put away than I remembered putting out earlier in December.

Central Baptist Church Prime timers meal schedule change

The Central Baptist Prime Timers meal will not be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012. It has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at noon. The entree will be fried chicken. Men’s Community Chili Supper

Tonight, December 28, 2011, Central Baptist Church of Italy will sponsor a Chili Supper. All men and boys of the community are invited to attend. The menu will feature Murray Wainscott’s famous chili along with Curtis Riddle’s delicious beans. There will be a guest speaker along with music and fellowship. Come join in on the fun tonight at 6:30pm at the Cornerstone Building of Central Baptist Church (205 E. Main Street, Italy).

Obituary: Dennis Neal Roth, 1961 -2011

Dennis Neal Roth, age 50, of Canyon Lake, TX passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011 at his home. He was born November 26, 1961 in Jacksonville, Illinois to Rolland and Vera Roth.

Eric Tolliver awarded Italy’s Officer of the Year

Police Chief Diron Hill welcomed friends and family of our local police department to the 2011 Italy PD awards banquet on Saturday night. Several commendations were given and Officer Eric Tolliver was awarded Officer of the Year. Sue Lauhoff was honored as Civilian Employee of the Year.

Christmas Lights Contest Winners

No one can say that Italy does not have the Christmas Spirit. Everywhere you go in Italy you can see Christmas lights galore. Santa Clauses, snowmen, lolly pops, nativity scenes, Christmas trees and candy canes can be seen scattered throughout the town.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas and lots of Christmas Cheer. That is what was happening at Trinity Mission last week. Santa showed up at Trinity Mission to make a special appearance for the residents’ Christmas party.

Ellis County Enters Into Medicaid Waiver Program

Jay Fox, CEO of Baylor Medical Center of Waxahachie, and David Anderson, CEO of Ennis Regional Medical Center, encouraged Ellis County to enter into an Affiliation Agreement under a State program that allows local governments and private hospitals to work together. For every dollar that the County contributes toward indigent health care, the hospitals will potentially be able to receive matching Federal Funds of $1.39.

Christmas Program at Milford ISD

Ho! Ho! Ho! It is Christmas time at Milford ISD. Thursday evening the gymnasium was filled with excited students, Christmas trees, proud parents and family members. Milford ISD’s band director, Mr. Mike Trussell, had his band students playing up a storm of Christmas music bringing Christmas cheer to everyone there.

Local Fire District Hosts Annual Dinner for Volunteers

Local Ellis County Emergency Service District #3 took the opportunity of the special season of Christmas to honor the local volunteer firemen and their families on Monday night. The group met at the Mt Zion AME Church in Italy and the church’s youth fed the firemen bar-b-que, homemade potato salad, beans, deviled eggs and special desserts.
