Tammy Wallis (Stafford Principal) wanted to come up with a way for teachers to be recognized for their outstanding teaching skills and hard work they put in everyday. Thus, the Teacher’s Heart Award. This award is awarded every six weeks. This time the award went to third grade teacher April Mathers.

Letter to the Editor: Plea for Help

The Italy Ex-student Association needs your help. For the last eight years, I have sent out the letters and kept up with whatever needed to be done. And I have loved it! I would like to continue but my failing eyesight just won’t let me. I guess sometimes you just have to know when to stop.

The City of Italy Park Board will have their monthly meeting today, Tuesday, March 1, 2011. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Italy Municipal Building at 105 West Main Street, Italy. Meeting time is 5:30pm. The agenda slates discussions regarding the recent Christmas Festival and proposed future projects.

Gladiator Baseball Season has begun

The Italy Gladiators traveled to Meridian this past Saturday to match up bats with the Yellow Jackets. The Gladiators got started on their season that will culminate in a district battle against Grandview, Maypearl, Axtell, Whitney, Clifton and Rio Vista.

Monday, February 28, 2011 there will be a called meeting of the Italy ISD School Board. The 6:00pm meeting will be held in the Italy ISD Administration Building. Agenda items pertain to the superintendent search as well as discussion and consideration of options regarding personnel cuts in preparation of the upcoming statewide education funding cuts.

Italy Masonic Lodge benefit raffle underway

I recently discovered that the Italy Masonic Lodge is having a raffle. The purpose of the raffle is to raise funds for renovations to their historic downtown Italy building. With the great prizes being offered and a worthwhile purpose, supporting the Italy Masons is a must do.

TAKS testing schedule for Italy High School campus

Mrs. Burns, Testing Coordinator/Counselor at the Italy High School campus wants to remind all Italy Jr High and High School parents that on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 all 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will be taking the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, which measures student’s mastery of the state-mandated curriculum.

James Murry “Pee Wee” Carter, age 74, of Italy, passed away early Monday, February 21, 2011 at his home. He was born March 6, 1936 in Waxahachie to Aline (Murray) and John Willis Carter, Sr. Pee Wee was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Italy for many years, the Italy Masonic Lodge, the AQHA and the NCHA. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed.

3rd Annual Lions Club BBQ Cook-off scheduled for February 25 & 26

The third annual Italy Lions Club BBQ Cook-off in scheduled for Friday and Saturday, February 25th and 26th. This event is sanctioned by the Lone Star BBQ Society. As in years past, the cook-off will be staged at the Upchurch Ball Park at 201 E. Dilworth Road in Italy. New this year will be a kids cook-off on Friday evening.

Italy FFA has select meats available for sale

Sonny Dickerson, IHS Ag teacher, has announced that he has select meats, as well as a few dessert items, available for purchase. These item are overstock from the Italy FFA Chapter’s annual meat sales fundraiser that was conducted this past December. All has been stored in a deep freezer and is available for purchase now.

City council sets election for May 14

The Italy City Council approved an ordinance calling for a general election May 14 for the purpose of electing a mayor and two council members for terms of two years and calling for a special election for the reauthorization of the local sales and use tax. The rate is one-fourth of one percent that will continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.

Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church to hold dinner concert

The Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church is hosting its first annual Dinner Concert on February 26th, 2011 at 6:00 pm. The event will be held at the Stafford Elementary Cafeteria (301 Harris Street, Italy) and tickets are $10. The entertainment will feature the Anointed Temple Mime Ministry.

Saturday night, February 12, a scrumptious Valentine dinner will be served at the Uptown Cafe. Consisting of brisket, sausage, potato salad, mashed potatoes, beans, macaroni and cheese, bread, tea and peach cobbler, the dinner will begin at 5:00pm.
