Daniel Alexander West was born on December 2, 2009 at 2:28pm. Daniel weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and was 20 inches long. Daniel’s proud parents are Mason and Randi Durham West (2005 IHS Graduate) of DeRidder, Louisiana.

Local Firemen honored at ceremony

Twenty to 48, those are the ages of the men graduating from the Italy Fire Academy this week. A total of eight came through with flying colors and will be nationally tested on Thursday morning at Navarro College.

Several teams from around the area participated in the Italy Invitational Tournament, held December 3-5, inside the Italy Coliseum. Italy had 3 teams participate including the Lady Gladiators (Varsity), the JV Gladiators and the Italy Gladiators (Varsity). Ray Loveless family counts their blessings this holiday season

The holidays are a wonderful time for reflection and counting our blessings. During this time of year the Ray Loveless family remembers the miracle that touched their lives in 2005. That’s the year Ray and Barbara’s grandson, Kaleb Loveless, was diagnosed with a nueroblastoma at the tender age of nine months old.

Young Heroes of the Guard Toy Drive

Adam Muirhead is helping to spread the news further of 4th & 19th TXSG Regiment doing a first annual “Young Heroes of the Guard” toy drive for very ill children/teens for Our Childrens Hospital at Baylor, in Dallas, December 12th-13th in the afternoon both days.

The City of Italy’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, December 6 at the Cornerstone in downtown Italy included the singing of Christmas carols, hot chocolate and prayers as the Italy Ministerial Alliance and the City of Italy pray that you and your family have a most joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Burk’s Kinder College Closed

Not only was Friday a gray day weather wise, it also was a very gray and gloomy day for Patricia Burk, owner of Burk’s Kinder College. Her lifelong dream of having a Christian daycare died on Friday with the closing of her daycare center.

Bobby Warren Itson, age 61, of Italy passed away Thursday evening, December 3, 2009 at his home. He was born September 18, 1948 in Avalon to Charley Warren and Billie Maxine (Smith) Itson. He was a graduate of Italy High School and attended all sports events. He was the #1 Italy Gladiator sports fan.

Tomorrow our little town will be bustling with fun and excitement. There will be a Christmas parade and lots and lots of booths and food galore. I even spotted a pick up truck loaded with bicycles. You guessed it-I am talking about Italy’s Annual Christmas Festival.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas! What child wouldn’t want to write Santa Claus a letter and tell Santa just exactly what they want for Christmas? And then get a reply from Santa? The United States Post Office is making this possible again, this year. They are ready for Santa’s letters.

Angel Tree at CNB of Texas in Italy

Image: CNB’s Angel tree — Stop by Citizen National Bank of Texas(CNB) in downtown Italy and select an Angel or make a cash donation in envelopes that help decorate the Angel Tree. All gift donations will need to be delivered unwrapped to the CNB by Thursday, December 17.

There is an Angel Tree in the lobby at Citizens National Bank of Texas in Italy. They have boy and girl angels, and for the folks who don’t have time to shop there are cash donation envelopes. All donations will go to families and children in need here in Ellis County.

Fifth annual Reading Marathon scheduled at Italy High School

The fifth annual Reading Marathon will be in full swing Dec. 7-11 at the Italy High School Library! Students, faculty and staff will be participating in a week-long event that will have someone constantly reading in the “Reading Parlor” in the library from 8 a.m. Monday morning December 7 until school dismisses at 3:20 p.m. Friday, December 11.

Milford’s Angels need a little help this year

Milford’s Police department has an Angel Tree every year, in fact this is the sixth year they have participated in this program. This year they are needing a little help. Times are tough this year and there are many “Angels” that need to be adopted.

Meals-on-Wheels participates in “Season of Suppers”

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties is participating in the annual event for their “Ani-Meals” program. This program, which began last February, aims to help the needy homebound take care of their companion animals—primarily dogs and cats. Donated pet food is delivered by volunteers on the first Saturday of each month.

Friday morning at 9:00 AM the gymnasium at Stafford Elementary was filled with smiling students and lots of friends and family members. They were there to see all the awards being given out for the second six-weeks honors assembly.

Proposed slaughter house denied

“Under the authority of Local Government Code 234.033, I will make a motion to deny location of a proposed slaughterhouse at 855 Slama Road because the operation is incompatible with existing land use of the neighboring area,” said Commissioner Bill Dodson, pct. 2. The motion came after extensive public testimony both for and against the proposal.

Lions Club’s annual Breakfast with Santa

On Saturday, December 5, the Italy Lions Club will have their annual Breakfast with Santa. Breakfast will be served at the Wayne Boze Building in downtown Italy from 7:00 to 10:00am. Come join Santa and the Italy Lions Club for this special holiday event.

Funds allocated for county road improvements

The Texas Highway Commission approved Thursday $25.2 million of Proposition 12 Rehabilitation funds to be used in Ellis County. The funds will be used to resurface lanes and ramps on Interstate Highway 35 from US 77 south of Waxahachie to approximately one mile north of Johnston Road.

IYAA earns two Superbowl Championships!

HUBBARD – The IYAA C-Team Gladiators defeat the Palmer Bulldogs to win the NESA “C” Superbowl 18-0. The IYAA B-Team Gladiators hold off the Ferris Yellowjackets for a 19-0 Superbowl win. The 2009 season marks the first time in IYAA history that all three football teams (A,B & C) qualified for the playoffs. Let the celebrations begin starting with the IYAA bonfire party tonight at 6:00 p.m.

Meals-on-Wheels needs help for the holidays

The holidays are here, and for Meals-on-Wheels, like everyone else, it is a busy and critical time of the year. With school being out and people going on vacation, Meals-on-Wheels needs caring volunteers to help deliver meals during the holidays. In addition, we are in need for additional routes to be added to meet the growing need of seniors in our area.

Energy Efficient and Conservation Block Grant

In a specially-called meeting Ellis County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to allow Ellis County to apply for a grant. The grant is funded by the American Recovery and Reinstatement Act. (ARRA) and being allocated through the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO).
