Byers proclaimed IYAA Volunteer of the Year

October 14, 2009 has been declared by the mayor of Italy to be Italy Youth Athletic Association (IYAA) Day. Mayor Frank Jackson also presented the first Volunteer of Year Award for IYAA to local parent, Barry Byers, on Monday night in a special session before the regular council meeting.

Zack W. McConnell, age 88, of Italy, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at his home. He was born January 25, 1921 in Gunter, Texas to Gilbert and Ada (Forbes) McConnell. Zack was a dedicated family man, Christian and a well respected business owner of McConnell Furniture in Italy, Texas for over 50 years

Dorothy Jo Carter McConnell, 87, a long time resident of Italy, Texas, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 11, 2009. She was born to the late Luin Alexander Carter and Martha Grace McSpadden Carter, on August 18, 1922 in Van Buren, Missouri.

Over the past four years I have listened to my sister complain about the drainage ditch by her house. Then recently I saw someones post on Facebook about how the street where they lived (Milan Street) was a river. At lunch today I decided I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

Gladiators Stampede the Longhorns 13-0

The Italy Gladiators charged into Longhorn country with quarterback Jasenio Anderson at the reins. It wasn’t exactly a shootout at the O.K. Corral as both sides relied on their running games. With pass attempts ricocheting off the mud-slicked surface, Italy did manage to post a shutout in their low-scoring win over Axtell, and that’s O.K. with Gladiator fans.

Obituary: Billy Ray Bradley, 1930 – 2009

Billy Ray Bradley, age 79, of Milford, passed away Friday, October 9, 2009 at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie. Billy Ray was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Milford where he served as a Deacon. He was a member of the Milford Cemetery Association and an active member of the Senior Citizens Center of Milford. He retired from TXU in 1987 after 35 years. Billy Ray was a longtime Funeral Attendant for Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home.

Agenda: City Council Meetings October 12, 2009

The Italy City Council will have two meetings on Monday, October 12. The regular meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at City Hall beginning at 6:30. In addition to their monthly meeting the Council will have a short Proclamation Reception at 6:00 pm. During this reception the Council will honor the IYAA Volunteer of the Year.

Italy Athletic Booster Club Meeting October 13

On Tuesday, October 13, immediately following the Italy High School/Jr High Parent meeting, the Italy Athletic Booster Club will meet. Coach Craig Bales, Italy ISD Athletic Director will speak at the meeting. Parents/Guardians who have interest in Italy ISD athletic programs are asked to attend.

IYAA schedule change for Saturday, October 10

IYAA President, Jason Escamilla wishes to inform the IYAA players, cheerleaders and parents that the football games originally scheduled to be played Italy this Saturday have been moved to Ferris. All IYAA football games will be played in Ferris this weekend.

Milford’s National Night Out

Even predictions of rain could not stop the citizens of Milford from coming out and supporting the Milford Police Department and the City of Milford on Tuesday night – National Night Out. They even set a record, approximately three hundred fifty Milford folks showed up to be a part of the festivities and show their support.

Parent Nominations for Gifted/Talented

Italy ISD offers services to gifted and talented students in a variety of formats. If your student is not currently identified as gifted and talented, and you believe that your child shows these tendencies, then you may nominate him/her for the screening process which is divided into three elements: standardized test of mental ability, teacher judgment based on observation and characteristics, and standardized achievement test scores (if available).

IYAA Gladiators Whomp The Wildcats

The IYAA Gladiators traveled to Scurry-Rosser Saturday to take on the Wildcats. The Wildcats knocked the IYAA C-Team and B-Team out of the playoffs last season setting the stage for some fun yet dramatic football.

Reward offered in vandalism case

If anyone knows who vandalized 320 Dale Evans, Italy, Texas (home of Tina Haight) on Saturday, October 3, please contact the Italy Police Department. There is a $10,000 reward being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

Agenda: Italy Park Board Meeting, October 5, 2009

The six member City of Italy Park Board will meet on Monday, October 5, 2009. The lone agenda item for this month’s meeting is regarding planning for the Christmas Parade to be held on December 5. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at Italy City Hall, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 and is open to the public.

Lions Club and Glasses

Recently at Stafford Elementary the Lions Club pulled up in their big bus to give eye exams and glasses to the students who needed them. Dr. Donna Haas has her practice, ‘Trinity Vision’ located in the Addison area, but travels to Italy in the bus to help children in need.

Grand Opening of Miss Millie’s

When I walked into Miss Millie’s Restaurant and Music Hall Saturday evening I was met with wonderful aromas emanating from the kitchen and familiar tunes from the band, Final Showdown. Everywhere you looked the tables were full with customers and delicious dishes of Mexican and American cuisine.

The George E. Scott Memorial Scholarship Dinner

Friday evening before the homecoming game the George E. Scott Memorial Scholarship dinner was held at Italy High School in the cafeteria. It was full of hungry people with not only an appetite for food but also an appetite for contributing to the scholarship fund. And a hearty appetite they had.

Czech Heritage Month declared

Stafford Book Fair a Great Success

Last week’s Scholastic Book Fair was absolutely fantastic! Our total sales were $7,547…breaking all records! Because our sales were over $5,000, we are able to take 60% of sales for profit…plus some additional profit rewards for hosting family night, lunch with someone you love, decorating for the theme, teachers’ classroom wish lists, and One for Books. That means that our Stafford students will enjoy $4,689.48 in more books for the library!

With Homecoming behind us we can all look forward to the next big community wide event, the 2009 National Night Out. The NNO will be held on October 6th. The Italy Police Department is planning a fun-filled fall evening but is in need of some volunteers to help them out.

Gladiators drum Polar Bears, start district 1-0

The Italy Gladiators challenged the Frost Polar Bears for the right to be 1-0 in district play during Italy High School’s Homecoming game on Friday. Italy head coach, Craig Bales, had his team ready to play and it did’t take long to realize that the old gold tradition has a new winning style. Once the balloons were filled, the ribbons were tied and the mums were pinned on, the Italy Gladiators got geared up for their championship run.

Flu Shot Clinic scheduled September 29

The Italy ISD Student Health Director has announced that there will be a Flu Shot clinic on Tuesday, September 29 at the Italy High School Campus. The shot will be administered by Italy Family Medicine and will cost $20.00. The clinic begins at 8:30am.

The Scholastic Book Fair at Stafford Elementary

Tuesday evening from six o’clock to 7:30 the place to be was Stafford Elementary in the library. There were books, books and more books. Along with all the books were students with their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, all trying to decide which books they were going to purchase.
