Italy High School surrounds the town with Homecoming

With careful planning and coordination, the Italy High School Homecoming Parade came off without a hitch. The entries moved up College Street and straight downtown before they headed back to the dome. It looked like the strong spirit of the Gladiator was standing straight and tall.

Obituary: Lawrence Earl Boyd, Jr., 1956 – 2009

Lawrence Earl Boyd, Jr., age 53, of Waxahachie, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2009 at his home. He was born March 31, 1956 in Dallas, Texas to Lawrence Earl Boyd, Sr. and Wanda Perryman Boyd. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Italy and the Oaks Fellowship. He had been married to Carolyn (Bryan) Boyd for 25 years.

Italy Man Arrested For Terrorism

Thursday afternoon, Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19 year old Jordanian, living and working in Italy, was arrested by the FBI for allegedly attempting to bomb The Fountain Place, a glass skyscraper with 60 floors, one of the tallest buildings in downtown Dallas.

IHS Class of 1989 – 20th year reunion plans

Can you believe it has been 20 years?? IHS Homecoming is Friday, September 25th. We really hope to have a successful reunion – and for it to be a success, we need you to be there! We would like to meet at the game and sit together as a class. Saturday, September 26, we’ll Party like it was 1989!

Events Around Texas

Lady Gladiators work hard on the season

The JV and Varsity Lady Gladiators hosted the Frost Lady Bears on Saturday. The volleyball teams worked hard to keep the scores climbing with some success. The Varsity took two of the five sets from Frost, however, it just wasn’t enough to put a mark in the win column. The JV played well but lost both games to Frost.

Italy Homecoming 2009 schedule of events

The 2009 Italy High School Homecoming festivities will begin this Friday, September 25. The afternoon will be chocked full of activities beginning at 3:00. Both the High School and Stafford Elementary campuses will be releasing students from classes early so that everyone can join in the fun.

Avalon ISD Subscribes to Flashalert

There was no one more excited or happier about getting a Monolithic Dome for Avalon ISD than David Del Bosque (superintendent). He really loves their dome. So it was very apt behavior when a storm was arriving last night to invite the community to sit out the storm in the Avalon Multipurpose Center.

Whirled Peace!

At ten o’clock Monday morning at Stafford Elementary the front yard of the school was covered with Stafford students holding whirling pinwheels up in the sky. It was quite a site to see! The students made the beautiful and brightly colored pinwheels themselves and were excited to be part of the International Day of Peace project.

Boil Water Notice Cancelled

It is no longer necessary to boil the water. Water samples have been taken to the test lab and all results show no signs of harmful bacteria or other microbes. All testing and the results from the testing were monitored by TCEQ.

It is not too late to enter your bike, trike or any other entry into the homecoming parade. The parade will start at 3:00 on Friday, September 25, 2009. Please begin lining up at 2:30. If you do not have an entry in the parade, please come out and support our Italy Gladiators by rooting them on. We hope to see everybody there.

Italy and Malakoff decide the game in O.T.

One For The Ages – The 1A Italy Gladiators traveled to take on the 2A Malakoff Tigers who Italy had beaten last season 33-8. Catching the Gladiators off guard, this wasn’t last years Tiger team. Malakoff brought in a complete new coaching staff for their 2009 campaign.

Malakoff made a clean sweep of the Italy 7th Grade, 8th Grade and JV football teams Thurdsay…even if it was muddy. Both Italy Junior High teams only had 11 players on each roster but all 22 players gave a valiant effort defending the home field. Malakoff’s JV Tigers started off slow but eventually slung enough mud into the air to win the game against the JV Gladiators.

Ellis County Equine Association Presents Awards

There was nothing but smiles on Saturday night as competitors in the Ellis County Equine Association gathered for their year-end banquet at Lakeview Camp and conference Center in Waxahachie to receive a menagerie of custom made awards in honor of their hard work to win championships throughout the horse show season.

Holly Michelle Simon and William Eric Bradley were married September 5, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Milford. Michael Chambers performed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Ramona and Mick Simon of Italy. The bridegroom is the son of Tianne and Mike Bradley also of Italy.

Kristie Holley lives a childhood dream

From the time Kristie Holley was a little girl she always wanted to be a school teacher. Kristie said, “When I was a little girl I would line up my dolls and play school. I always wanted to be a teacher.” Now Kristie is living that childhood dream at Stafford Elementary as their new sixth grade teacher.

PSAT testing date set at Italy High School

The PSAT/NMQST will be administered at Italy High School on Wednesday, October 14, 2009. The PSAT is a standardized test that provdies practice taking the SAT. It also enables students to enter the NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.

County burn ban lifted

Following several days of heavy, soaking rains, Ellis County Commissioners convened in a specially-called meeting to rescind a ban on outdoor burning. The ban, declared on July 20, was originally set to expire in mid-October.

Obituary: Samantha Michelle “Shelley” Nance, 1989-2009

This loving young soul was taken away too early from us, Samantha Michelle (Shelley) Nance, went to be with the lord on Sept. 11, 2009. Shelley was an award winning artist. She was a student at the Art Institute of Dallas. She was majoring in multi-media arts and animation. She loved animals, computers, and anything to do with art. This 20 yr old woman was well on her way to achieving her life’s dreams of being an artist.

Pretty In Pink

Image: Pink is in — The Lady Gladiators gave a good fight on Tuesday against the Lady Eagles.  They earned money for Breast Cancer Research.  The Lady Eagles, however, took the matches, winning 3 out of 4 games.

The coming together of two rivals doesn’t happen often but history was made this week in the Avalon gym. The Lady Eagles hosted the Lady Gladiators to a DIG PINK game.

Strange activity at local doll factory reported

Just like last year, drivers on Hwy 77 have reported seeing strange lights and hearing weird noises at the Kilemol Doll Factory and Meat Packing Plant. It is within a stone’s throw or spitting distance from the Italy Cemetery which could automatically give someone the creeps.

Karson Holley – Italy’s Citizen of the Month

Eight year old Karson Holley had a great summer. Part of what made her summer great was the opportunity she had to deliver Meals on Wheels on Wednesdays with her grandmother, Francis Holley (Gran). Because of her dedication to helping the elderly, Karson was selected as this month’s Citizen of the Month.

Image: Justin Wood’s teammates won’t give him a break about his injury — Justin Wood is the kind of kid that would give his right arm to play Gladiator football, unfortunately, a break in his left arm will keep Justin out of the lineup during his 8th Grade season. Returning to school on Wednesday, Justin did get to spend time with teammates Zain Byers, Sampson Maldonado and Bailey Walton after practice.

The family of Justin Wood would like to express a sincere thank you to Coach Craig Bales and his Italy High School coaching staff, along with Stafford Elementary nurse Rita Garza, for their effective handling of Justin when he was injured during football practice two weeks ago.

Firemen Honored at First Baptist Church

The local volunteer fire department was recognized on Sunday at First Baptist Church. Rev. Ronnie Dabney, Chief Don Chambers and Associate Pastor Michael Chambers led the ceremony with videos of firemen at work and also a remembrance of 09/11/01.

Italy Junior High Plays Milford

The Italy 7th and 8th grade girls lead the march in the first Junior High Volleyball games of the season this week. The Lady Bulldogs traveled from Milford to play the Lady Gladiators. The 7th grade won the first sets in the best two games, winning 25-15 and 25-16. Coach Tina Richards said, “I am very proud of the 7th grade. This is a great way to start our season-with a win!”

County Tax Rate Set

In a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, September 14, 2009, Ellis County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the tax rate for the 2009/2010 fiscal year as previously announced.

Class of 2007 plans tribute

When several members of the Italy High School Class of 2007 heard that one of their classmates had died, they were shocked and saddened. They could not imagine Samantha Michelle Nance (Shelley) not being with them anymore. As they heard the reports of her murder, they questioned why.

Obituary: Mary Lou Gillespie, 1926-2009

Mary Lou Gillespie, 83, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2009 at her home in Avalon. She was born in Bardwell, Texas on July 31, 1926. Her parents were Clarence and Mayme (Aldridge) Cunningham. Mary Lou graduated from Bardwell High School in 1943.

Flood Warning and County Road Closures

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a flood warning for the following areas Trinity River in Texas. Trinity River near Rosser affecting Ellis and Kaufman counties forecast flooding changed from MINOR to MODERATE severity for the following areas in Texas: Chambers Creek near Rice affecting Navarro County.
