The Friday pep rally inside the old gym at Italy High School was a fun time for students, cheerleaders, players, faculty and the community. A speech from NFL great and Italy alum Keith Davis highlighted the event along with the IHS cheerleaders as they performed a dance routine to the song, “Thriller.”

Letter to the Editor: Beer and wine sales

I had not heard much about the upcoming election regarding beer and wine sales in Italy until a couple of weeks ago. Now, that is just about all I am hearing. After much soul searching and some research, I knew how I wanted to vote on all the issues, not just the local beer and wine sales issue. I exercised my right to vote when I voted early.

Lightning strikes cause power outage at Stafford Elementary

During today’s storms, a bolt of lighting struck one of the electrical transformers that supplies power to the elementary school in Italy. The Italy Fire Department responded to make sure that there was no immediate danger. Oncor responded quickly and the power was back on within a couple of hours.

Gladiators blast into Wortham, Bulldogs self-destruct

The Italy Gladiators blasted into Wortham’s Bulldog Stadium and pounded “Big Blue” into submission. Italy’s high powered offense didn’t rely on it’s air attack in this one, instead the Gladiators defeated the Bulldogs at their own running game. The win puts Italy at 4-0 in District with the Dawson Bulldogs coming to town on Friday.

Burke’s Kinder College Open House

Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Burke’s Kinder College will be having their Open House. If you are looking for a place to care for your children during the day this will give you the opportunity to chat with Patricia Burke (owner), a few teachers, tour the school and pick up an enrollment packet.

Commissioners invite public testimony

Ellis County Commissioners called on the public to provide input Monday night during a regularly scheduled meeting of the Court. The topic was 9-1-1 address display format standards as described in House Bill 2665, passed in the 81st Texas Legislative Session. The bill amends the Transportation Code by authorizing the Commissioners’ Court to adopt and impose standards for design and installation of address number signs to identify properties located in unincorporated areas of the county.

IYAA posts 3 shutouts against Dawson

Three games against the Dawson Bulldogs on Saturday resulted in three shutout wins for the IYAA Gladiator football teams and their cheerleaders. In the three games combined, Italy totalled 80-points to Dawson’s 0-points. “Ouch!”

ITALY – The undefeated Wortham Bulldogs showed their might against Italy’s Junior High team on Thursday at Willis Field. Amazingly, with less than a minute to go and Wortham in control of the ball, a scoreless Italy team avoided being shutout by the Bulldogs in dramatic fashion.

Gladiator fan needs your prayers

Bobby Itson was careflighted to Parkland Hospital this afternoon around 1:00 p.m. His family and friends would greatly appreciate your prayers. Doctors confirmed that he has suffered a stroke. The doctors are evaluating him now. Bobby is best known as the ultimate Gladiator fan and would in Wortham tonight if he could. Thank you.

Law regarding mandatory address signs

There is a new law that has recently been passed by the Texas Legislature. (See the images.) This law is set up to allow any county that wishes to subscribe to it, to force all the home owners in the county to put a regulation size sign on their homes identifying the home.

IYAA Picture Day was a snap

The IYAA football teams and cheerleaders enjoyed IYAA Picture Day on Tuesday. And even though picture day turned into picture night after the camera crew was delayed in the traffic, the kids were all smiles when it was time to say, “Cheese!”

Tailgating at Trinity Mission

Tuesday morning around 10:00 o’clock wonderful aromas could be detected outside Trinity Mission. They were having their annual tailgating party which included an awesome barbeque. Lots of the residents were outside wearing corsages that all the staff of Trinity Mission made for them.

Park Board Meets

On Monday night, the Italy Park Board met at 6:30 in the Council Chambers and discussed the Italy Christmas Festival slated for December 5.

Central Baptist Church Annual Roundup

On Sunday, October 25, 2009, Central Baptist Church, 113 South Ward in Italy, will kick off their Annual Roundup at 10:45 a.m. The activities wll begin with morning worship at 10:45. Immediately following the service, everyone is invited to stay and enjoy a brisket lunch with all the trimmings.

Flavia Tovar Gonzales, age 78, of Waxahachie, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 at her home. She was born October 5, 1931 in Italy, Texas to Eugene Tovar and Paulina Ramos. Flavia was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and also the Altar Society.

Gladiators cage the Jaguars 51-12

The Italy Gladiators (4-2 overall) battled the Hubbard Jaguars (1-6 overall) Friday night at Willis Field in Italy. Early in the first quarter, the Gladiators gave the Jaguars a taste of what the rest of the game had in store for the spotted cats.

IHS Holds Mock Election

How important is politics to students at the local high school? According to the senior government class in Italy, elections are a priority and according to teacher, Coach Steven Coleman, life lessons are to be learned as well.

On Monday, October 19, 2009 the Board of Trustees of the Italy ISD will have a Board workshop followed by a regular monthly meeting. The workshop will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be held in the superintendents office. The regular meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be conducted in the band hall of the Italy High School Campus. Both meeting locations can be found at the Italy High School campus at 300 South College.

Junior High KO’s Hubbard in 4 rounds, 26-6

Reminiscent of Rocky III, when Rocky Balboa was pitted against Mr. T’s Clubber Lang character, the Italy Junior High whipped the Hubbard Jaguars in four rounds of football. Hubbard, with only a tie on their record coming into the game, now have a loss to go with that tie thanks to a surging Italy Junior High team that improved their record to 2-1.

The November 3rd Election day is fast approaching. Early voting will begin on Monday, October 19th. The Italy City Council Chamber (105 W. Main Street) will be the local polling place for the early voting. Please note that early voting in Italy will take place only on October 19 through October 23. If you wish to vote early on October 24, or October 26 through October 30 you will need to travel to do so.

Sara Tovar, age 57, of Italy, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie. She was born October 30, 1951 in Italy to Eugenio and Cipriana (Tabarez) Tovar. She was a member of the Epiphany Mission Catholic Church in Italy.

Italy’s National Night Out

Italy’s National Night out was held Tuesday night at the George Scott gymnasium at the Italy High School. It was postponed from last Tuesday because of rain. There still was rain but it didn’t stop the fun.
