The Shop With a Hero raffle was held today and was a big success thanks to everyone that purchased tickets. A big thank you also goes to the Spring Market for allowing us to hold the raffle drawing there and for their employees picking the winning tickets.

Big plans underway for 2016 National Night Out in Italy

The Italy Police Department is planning many activities for this year’s National Night Out (NNO). Upchurch Field in Italy will come alive with all kinds of entertainment, food and fun this year on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Jon Mathers is the guest disc jockey for the evening so Chief Beckham is requesting that all the children come and “wobble with the chief”.

Christopher Rizzuto brings years of experience to Italy ISD

Christopher Rizzuto has recently been hired as the new Assistant Principal for Italy High School. He was raised in Louisiana where his father was a teacher and a rice and soybean farmer. When he graduated from high school in Louisiana, he had his future all planned out. Even though almost everyone in his family were teachers, coaches or educators, he decided to go a different life route and major in pre-law. He planned to go to law school after he graduated from college, but life circumstances sent him to another state and a different career.

Obituary: Onita “Billie” Chambers, 1925 — 2016

Onita B. “Billie” Chambers, age 90, a lifelong resident of Italy, passed away at Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation, on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. She was born on December 13, 1925 in Peoria, Texas. Billie married Aubra Chambers on December 29, 1946. Some of her favorite times were watching the sun set with Aubra at their home in the country.

Our new IHS Band Director, Mr. VanOmmeren, invited the band parents to come and see what the band has been working on all summer. Unfortunately, the weather forced us indoors, but it was great to hear the marching band’s halftime program for this year. The theme is music from Guardians of The Galaxy. After the performance, the band boosters hosted an ice cream social for all.

IYAA Football and Cheerleading Signups will end Saturday, August 20th. We still need players and cheerleaders, so if you would like to sign your child up, this article lists the signup options available to parents. All past players as well as newcomers are welcome to sign up!!!

Italy City Council takes no action regarding mayor and council compensation

In a called meeting on August 12, 2016, the Italy City Council after much discussion took no action regarding City Council and Mayor compensation. Council member Henry Wortman requested this be placed on the agenda. He said that in 2009 the council had been seen in a bad light by the media when the council gave themselves and the mayor a raise. He said he felt the Mayor and Council deserved to be compensated for the job they were doing. He suggested the council reinstate this by compensation to the mayor and council members.

Italy Independent School District welcomes you to the 2016 – 2017 School Year. The teachers are reporting this week and soon the students will be filling our halls. It has been a busy summer to get ready for them. We have accomplished much and look forward to continued growth for our community and students.

Lee Joffre named Italy ISD Superintendent

During the regular meeting of the Italy ISD Board of Trustees Tuesday night, the Trustees voted unanimously to hire Lee Joffre as the district’s new Superintendent. Mr. Joffre has been the Italy High School principal for 5 years. During that time the high school developed a Dual Credit program that allows over 20% of the high school students to get college credit while in high school. The high school has earned Distinctions from Texas Education Agency in Mathematics, Social Studies and Closing Performance Gaps. In addition the attendance and graduation rates at the high school have improved under Mr. Joffre’s leadership.

Italy Clean Up Day — August 13, 2016

The City of Italy is doing a second clean up day on August 13, 2016 at Upchurch Ball Fields (200 Dilworth, Italy). It will start at 7am and continue until the dumpster is full. This is only for city residents with a current city water bill with a photo ID to match the bill. Only one truck load will be accepted.

Helen Fielder, 81, passed away on July 27, 2016 in Waxahachie. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. Interment will directly follow at Italy Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.

Italy High School Dual Credit Enrollment Information

The Dual credit program at Italy High School is a great opportunity for your student to earn high school and college credit at a fraction of the cost, without ever leaving Italy High School. With Navarro as our “Community College” we are here to assist our dual credit students with the transition from high school to College and help our students meet their educational goals.

S.M. Dunlap to host presentation about recent excavation of mammoth near Italy

Professor Tom Vance of Navarro College will be delivering a presentation at Italy’s S.M. Dunlap Library (300 W. Main Street) at 2pm on Saturday, August 6, 2016 discussing the excavation of “Ellie May,” the mammoth discovered in Ellis County in 2014. Professor Vance’s presentation will include a slideshow and stories from the dig site as well as a discussion of other mammoths found in Texas.
