Notice is hereby given that a Public Hearing will be held by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. and a second Hearing by the Italy City Council on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the Boze Mitchell Community Center, located at 161 W. Main St., Italy, TX to consider a request from IH 35 Spaceship. LP to zone property located at the Northeast Corner of IH 35 and Dale Evans to Commercial Highway District.

Tae Kwon Do Students Compete in Tournament

On May 14th, some students from the Hillsboro Unified Tae Kwon Do School located at 125 W Elm Hillsboro, Texas competed in an invitational tournament in Austin, Texas. Among the students who competed were Juan Salas and two of his daughters from Frost, Texas. Juan returned home with two first place trophies, one in patterns and one in sparring. Analy and Joana returned home with trophies as well.

Italy Clean Up Day — July 23

The City of Italy is doing a clean up day on July 23rd at 1100 Hwy 667. It will start at 7am and continue until the dumpster is full. This is only for city residents with a current city water bill with a photo ID to match the bill. Only one truck load will be accepted.

Michael Bryant earns Black Belt

On November 30, 2012 Michael along with his mom and dad, came to visit the Hillsboro Unified Tae Kwon Do located at 125 W Elm-Hillsboro. After participating in a few free classes Michael decided martial arts was for him. He has competed in many tournaments and has come home with many first place trophies.

Italy HS Sports Physicals, Thursday, July 21, from 11:30am — 3:00pm inside dome

Sports physicals will take place on Thursday, July 21 from 11:30 a.m. — 3:00 p.m. inside the Gladiator Coliseum dome located on the campus of Italy High School. Cost will be $25 per physical. All incoming 7th Grade thru 12th Grade student-athletes are required to have a completed physical in order to participate on August 1, the beginning of the Volleyball and Football seasons.

IHS 2016 Scholarship Recipients…read this

For recipients of 2016 Scholarships, specifically Lone Star Cyclists and IHS ACT/SAT Scholarships, the student must present proof of enrollment, a copy of the student ID card, and the full mailing address for the Business/Financial Aid office of the College or University in which the student has enrolled in order to collect your scholarship earnings.

5th Annual Guns vs. Hoses a Success

Even though the weather did not cooperate on Saturday, the 5th Annual Guns vs. Hoses fundraiser was a success. Because of weather conditions, the fireworks show was cancelled.

Letter regarding Italy FFA trip to State FFA Convention in Dallas

High school administration and FFA advisors are aware of what happened in downtown Dallas last night. With State FFA Convention in Dallas around the corner our main priority is student safety. Please know that we will be monitoring this situation in the days to come. We will still be attending convention knowing that some late night activities and off site excursions may be limited.

Obituary: Freddie Thomas Ivy, 1938 — 2016

Freddie Thomas Ivy was born September 15, 1938 in Milford, Texas to Fred and Margie Ivy and passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Methodist Mansfield Hospital. Freddie was a member of the Italy Masonic Lodge # 647 and a longtime member of the Central Baptist Church in Italy.

Italy’s Select Softball Review

The future is bright for the Italy Lady Gladiators. Although the high school group is fielding the lowest number of select players they have fielded in the 21st century, six of their younger minions have taken up their bats, gloves, and gear to play select on a variety of teams in North Texas.

Sno Cone fundraiser for CBC Youth on Friday, July 8

Central Baptist Church Youth is having a snow cone stand to raise money for students to attend summer camp. The Sno Cone sale will be Friday, July 8th from 5pm-9pm, and the cost is $1 for small and $2 for a large. Please help these students go to camp and have a amazing summer!

Italy HS welcomes new band director Jonathan VanOmmeren; Perez goes to Heritage

During a meet and greet on Friday, Italy High School and the community welcomed its newest band director, Jonathan VanOmmeren, and his wife, Aimee, while enjoying cake and punch inside the school cafeteria. The event also gave band supporters a chance to say thanks and goodbye to former band director, Jesus Perez, who will start anew at Midlothian Heritage High School.

Admissions will be $2 for kids and $3 for Adults. Basketball tournament benefits Mt. Gilead Baptist Church of Italy with Pastor Preston Dixon. Being held inside George E. Scott Coliseum at Italy High School.

Obituary: H.L. “Sonny” Southard, 1927 — 2016

Avalon resident H. L. “Sonny” Southard, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior and his loving wife, Joy on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 surrounded by his loving family in Avalon. He was born to Emmett and Lola Dixon Southard on May 14, 1927 in Avalon.
