Letter to the Editor: Italy Jail prospect

I was forwarded your article. It was a very informative and well written article. It is very interesting that James Parkey of Corplan is interested in building a jail in Italy, Texas. Ellis County just built a county owned and county operated facility in Waxahachie which will be housing “contract inmates.” McLennan County just finished building a 816 bed facility that will house “contract inmates.” It was built with a program Parkey will be trying to convince Italy Council members is a sound investment and will stimulate the Italy economy.

City of Italy “Clean Up Day”

On Saturday, June 5th there will be a clean up day. City of Italy residents can bring a loaded truck or trailer to the CSC Landfill in Avalon for disposal. Residents will need to have their current water bill in-hand. CSC will be open from 7:00am to 11:00am.

Memorial Day poem

If you’re a veteran you’ve most certainly seen or heard this poem. If you’re over the age of 40 you’ve probably heard it. If you’re my age you remember when organizations gave away or raised money selling poppies this time of year.

Save the date for the Daddy-Daughter Dance

On Saturday, June 5, the Union Missionary Baptist Church will be sponsoring a Daddy-Daughter Dance. This formal dance will be held at the Italy High School beginning at 7:00pm. Admission will be $20 per couple. Fathers and Grandfathers alike are invited to escort their young ladies to this memorable occasion.

3rd Team All-American Sarah DeMoss competes in NCAA Tournament

Image: Sarah DeMoss is a senior for the Angelo State Lady Rambelles — Italy High School graduate, Sarah DeMoss #12, a senior right fielder and lead-off batter for the Angelo State Lady Rambelles, is currently competing in the 2010 NCAA, Division II, National Championship tournament in St. Joseph Missouri.

Updated – Sunday, May 30 at 4:00 p.m. — A former softball player for the Italy Lady Gladiators from 2003 to 2006 and currently an Angelo State University Lady Rambelle’s senior, #12 Sarah DeMoss is leading the charge for the 19th ranked Lady Rambelles during their 2010 NCAA, Division II, Softball National Chamionship quest, with all games being played in St. Joseph, Missouri at Heritage Park.

IHS Athletic Banquet reminder

Due to the run in the playoff’s by our Lady Gladiator Softball Team and Gladiator Baseball team the annual IHS Athletic Banquet had to be postponed and rescheduled several times. As this outstanding athletic year comes to a close the banquet to honor all our Gladiators and Lady Gladiators is finally before us.

Shelley Nance Memorial Tree Dedication

Samantha (Shelley) Nance, a brilliant artist and a 2007 IHS graduate, will continue to be lovingly remembered after her Memorial Garden dedication ceremony at Italy High School on Monday, May 24, held to honor her life.

Saddle Ridge Ranch coming to town

A new ranch is coming to Italy and it is exclusively for kindergarten through 6th grade age children. Central Baptist Church is hosting Saddle Ridge Ranch, this year’s Vacation Bible School. Saddle Ridge Ranch will be held June 14 – 18, 2010 from 9:45 a.m. to noon at Central Baptist Church, 113 S. Ward Street in Italy.

There will be a regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Corporation on Monday, May 24 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the council chambers of the Italy Municipal Building, 105 Main Street. The agenda slates three items for the regular session of the meeting and one item for discussion during a closed session.

Lady Gladiators are Regional Semi-finalists; Blue Ridge advances

Forney — After tying the best of three regional semi-final series 1-1 with the 10th ranked Blue Ridge Lady Tigers on Thursday, the Italy Lady Gladiators stormed out of the dugout to take a 2-0 lead in Saturday’s game 3. Blue Ridge quickly countered to go up 3-2 and eventually ended the Lady Gladiators’ 2010 playoff run with a 12-7 win over Italy.

National Honor Society has induction

Italy High School values the National Honor Society program at their school. With scholarship, service, leadership and character as the basis for membership selection, quality students are springing up all over school.

Hawaii, Here We Come

The Class of 2010 enjoyed a luau hosted by the First Baptist Church of Italy. Games, good food and a lot of fun was included on the menu. No pig in the ground but this atmosphere was only missing the sand.

The Last Ride

The IHS varsity baseball team traveled to Royse City on Saturday to meet the Dodd City varsity. The match was fierce but in the end Dodd City held the key and the Gladiators came home on their last ride together.

The Italy Lady Gladiators (25-6) will play a best 2/3 series against the Blue Ridge Lady Tigers (25-8) at Warren Middle School in Forney for the regional semi-final championship. The two teams will play a double header on Thursday, May 20 starting with the first game at 5:00 p.m. followed by the second game at 7:30 p.m. The third game will be played on Saturday, May 22 at 12:00 p.m. if needed.

Carolyn Maevers retires

“Good Morning class we are going to have a great day today” could be heard just about every morning at Stafford Elementary over the loud speaker. And of course I am talking about Carolyn Maevers. She never missed a chance to tell the kids she loved them and they were going to have a great day.

Changing lives one youth at a time

Eric Enriquez is the Youth Director at First Baptist Church in Avalon. Over the last year, the youth department has grown by leaps and bounds. They meet every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the church on S. Giles in Avalon.

Bright and early Monday morning lots of first grade students at Stafford Elementary were having a blast! Swinging on swings, sliding down slides, football games and lots of water fun was being had by all.

Ice cream, games and bubbles-sounds like a kid’s party. Not really, if you are a senior at Italy High School, these are just some of the items you will need for the beginning of fun. Last week was the kick off for the senior parties hosted by some of the churches in town. The First United Methodist Women gave an ice cream party in the honor of the graduating class.

Living Memorial dedication for IHS graduate planned for May 24th

On Monday, May 24th a tree will be dedicated to the memory of Shelley Nance, a 2007 IHS graduate. Due to her untimely death in the fall of 2009, Shelley’s classmates, college friends, and family will come together on May 24th at 11:00 am to dedicate a tree at the IHS campus. The public is encouraged to attend.

Milford Craft Fair-a success

Titus Women of Milford held their craft fair on Saturday, May 8th and had quite a crowd. Jeannie Richardson of the Titus Women said, “We had a great crowd and the vendors were so happy they want to do it again next year so I call it a success”.

Seniors Presented Scholarships

There is nothing happier than a graduating high school senior with a scholarship and there were several seniors jumping for joy at Italy High School on Tuesday. The administration wants the under classmen to know they can achieve the same thing.

Agenda: Italy City Council Work Session, May 17, 2010

On Monday, May 17, 2010, the Italy City Council will have a work session. This meeting will be held at the Italy City Hall Council Chambers at 105 Main Street. The agenda reads that there will be a discussion with Kent Bratcher, Gary McKibben and Mr. Parkey regarding a commercial development proposal with the City of Italy. The will begin at 6:30pm and is open to the public.

Lady Gladiators win game 1 of regional quarterfinal against Meridian

The Lady Gladiators haven’t been waiting a whole week to play this one. They’ve been waiting a whole year. After the Meridian Lady ’Jackets knocked Italy out of the playoffs last season during their regional quarterfinal matchup, head coach Jennifer Reeves, along with her assistant coaches Tina Richards and Andrea Windham, has been tracking this one on the calendar ever since.

Deep in the Jungle

When I walked into Stafford Elementary’s cafeteria Thursday, I thought I was in the Jungle! There were wild animals everywhere you looked. Kind of scary, until you realize they are the cutest little first graders you ever saw putting on their annual Deep in the Jungle musical.

Agenda: Italy ISD School Board Meeting, May 17, 2010

On Monday, May 17 the Italy ISD Board of Trustees will have their regular monthly meeting. The meeting will be held in the Band Hall of the Italy High School campus (300 College) and will begin at 7:00pm. Agenda items include board members’ oath of office ceremony and election of officers. Also slated on the agenda is the consideration of purchasing new band uniforms.
