There will be a called meeting of the Italy City Council today, July 15, 2010 at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Italy Municipal Building, 105 Main Street. The agenda slates that interviews for the Public Works Director position will be conducted during this meeting which is open to the public.

Vacation Bible School at Mt Gilead Missionary Baptist Church

The Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church would like to invite everyone to join them in what will be the start of an explosive worship service through Vacation Bible School. All ages are welcome to a Praise Party in Worshiping God with Head, Heart, Hands, Feet, and Soul!! There will be games, stories, crafts, and music. Be ready to move! It’s a Praise Party!

Gladiator Athletic Booster Club formed

In a packed library of Athletic, Band and FFA parents, Greg Shropshire of the CPA firm Pattillo, Brown and Hill, LLP of Hillsboro, made recommendations and fielded questions regarding the legalities of booster clubs. After an hour long discussion it was determined that a new athletic booster club would be formed.

Italy High School Athletics Parent Support Meeting

On Tuesday, July 13 there will be a meeting for parents of athletes of Italy High School. There will be a representative from the CPA firm Patillo, Brown and Hill on hand to field questions regarding laws on the implementation of parent support organizations. Other Italy ISD parent support organizations (ie. band boosters, Stafford PTA) are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at 6:30pm in the Italy High School Library.

Milford’s Lil’ Dogs win district championship in extra inning

After a series of downpours forced the IYAA hosted girls 8u district softball tournament to relocate from the Upchurch Ball Fields to the Italy High School Softball field, teams from Italy, Milford, Ferris, Ennis and Kopperl battled to be one of two teams left standing and earn a spot in the state tournament to be held in Athens. The district championship came down to a rematch between the Milford Lil’ Dogs, head coached by Ty Evans, and the Ferris Scorpions.

Meals-on-Wheels 23rd Annual Golf Benefit

Meals-on-Wheels and its Title Sponsor, Community Bank, is set for the 23rd Annual Golf Benefit. The event will be held on Thursday, September 16 at Cleburne Golf Links. Registration for the benefit is open and morning and afternoon tee times are still available. Early bird registration is until August 27. Like years passed, golfers are promptly signing up for the morning and afternoon flights.

Ms. Stars and Stripes Pageant Winner

Trinity Mission resident Evelyn Jenkins was the proud and excited winner of the Ms. Stars and Stripes Beauty Pageant held July 1st at the Texas Theater in downtown Waxahachie. There were three other contestants and they were all from Trinity Mission—Willie Inman, Opal Lamb and Audrey Aldredge.

Local teams take the fields in area-wide District Tournaments

Teams from Italy and Milford are competing in area wide district tournaments this week and next. The IYAA is hosting the girls 8u district tournament this week and all remaining games are to be played at the Italy High School softball field. Girls teams that finish in first or second place in the district tournaments go to state. Boys district tournaments start Monday and teams must win the championship to advance to state.

Door to door salesman in Italy

It has been reported that there is door to door salesman in Italy that is selling children’s computer software. Part of the sales pitch is that the software has been approved by the Italy ISD. This is not true. The software has no affiliation with the school district. Please be aware of that fact.

Benefit planned for Elizabeth Sam

Image: Remembering Elizabeth Sam — A benefit for the family of Elizabeth Sam is planned for Wednesday, July 7 from 7:00 p.m. to close at College Street Pub located at 210 N. College Street in Waxahachie.

Elizabeth Sam, a 1991 WHS graduate, passed away after a valiant fight with breast cancer on July 1, her 37th birthday. Her family and friends need our help raising funds for funeral expenses. The College Street Pub in Waxahachie has graciously offered to host a benefit to assist the Sam family on Wednesday, July 7 from 7:00 p.m. to close.

Replacement home needed for Ilona from Germany

A caring host family (with or without children) is needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home to Ilona from Germany. She was looking forward to her school year in Milford Texas and is scheduled to arrive on August 21st. Her initial host family had to cancel and it would be great if another family would take their place and welcome her in their home. Ilona is 15-years-old and will be entering the 10th grade.

Fireworks or gunfire?

The Italy Police Department responds to a ‘multiple shots fired’ call disturbance near Harris Street in Italy. Around midnight during a 4th of July celebration, a large crowd between 100 to 200 citizens, predominantly Italy and Milford citizens, engaged in hostile activity and had to be dispersed with help from DPS troopers and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department. On Monday, authorities responded to flare ups in both Italy and Milford.

Homecoming 2010—1960 Class Reunion

Emails and letters have been mailed to the nine living members of the 1960 graduating class of Italy High School about Homecoming this fall. Here’s hoping that Anne Bearden Himes, Peggy Brown McDaniel, Garlin Bell, Sue Davis Batte, Margaret Feaster Epperson, Eddie Green, Annette Ince Hooser, Elaine Norcross Alexander, and Glynda Thomas Underwood will be able to attend. We will look forward to visiting with friends from other classes as well.

Ervin Byers celebrates 80th birthday with family and friends

Ervin A. Byers, once the dentist in Italy between 1960 and 1992, celebrated his 80th birthday with family and friends at the Doris Mitchell owned and operated Uptown Cafe in Italy, Texas. Also celebrating a birthday on “Doc’s” special day was his fifth born son, Brentley Byers.

Caution urged in use of fireworks

With soaking rains a strong possibility for the week, Ellis County Commissioners took no action on a proposed burn ban during Monday night’s meeting, opting instead to urge citizens to exercise caution in the use of fireworks during the upcoming holiday weekend.

Central Baptist Youth bake sale

The youth of Central Baptist Church will be holding a bake sale on Friday, July 2nd and Saturday, July 3rd from 10:30am-1:00pm each day at the Uptown Cafe. All the money raised will go toward youth camp for the summer.

There will be a public hearing and regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Corporation on Monday, June 28 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the council chambers of the Italy Municipal Building, 105 Main Street. The agenda items have primary focus on a proposed property purchase in the downtown area of Italy and items pertaining to a Community Center.

Sing Along at Trinity Mission

Every Thursday afternoon, Vivian Brooks and Bonnie Watson come to Trinity Mission and lead the residents in song. They pass out the words to all the songs so the residents can sing along. They sing songs like, Onward Christian Soldiers, The Old Rugged Cross, I Come To the Garden, Jesus Loves Me and many more of the old traditional hymns.

Local student focuses on the environment

Italy High School freshman, Meagan Hooker, was selected as one of 30 students to participate in the South Texas Buckskin Brigade camp in Carrizo Springs, Texas this June. Learning about wildlife, natural resources and land preservation, this 14 year old developed her leadership skills and refined her knowledge about conservation in Texas.

60 years ago the Korean War began and cost over 30,000 American lives. While the war has never officially ended we have allowed it to be forgotten by many Americans. In some cases it’s not even a footnote in the history books.

Tour d’ Italia circles the countryside

Approximately 1300 bicyclists, young and old, converged upon Italy High School and rode the 25th Annual Tour d’ Italia bicycle event on Saturday. This cycling event happens every year in Italy and the cyclists enjoy the countryside and the warm welcome from Italy residents.
