City hires new trash service

Everyone in the city is going to get a new roll away trash can for trash disposal, with the new DCI trash contract that the city decided on last night. The council also discussed the art class painting a mural on the old train trestle concrete, the building codes and permits, budget adjustments for sanitation contract, and action regarding the Substandard Building Ordinance.

Park Board prepares for park construction

The Italy Park Board has postponed May Day in the Park until liability issues could be resolved between the school district and the city. Five of the nine-member board was present at a meeting Tuesday evening in city council chambers.

April 11th, The Country Gospel Festival was in full swing at the Wayne Boze building about 6:00 PM. As you approached the front of the building you could hear beautiful music flowing through the front doors.

Steve Mitchell is one of the people that had that kind of life changing event when he was a young boy. But, the amazing thing is that even though it changed him physically, it did not change his true makeup or his spirit. Steve knew he was going to make it no matter what the odds were and against all odds.

Obituary: Betty Cole, 1930 – 2009

Betty M. Cole, age 78, of Italy, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 21, 2009 at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie. She was born July 31, 1930 in Mertens to Isom and Addie Lou (Coggins) Cagle. Betty was a member of the Italy Church of Christ.

On Sunday, April 19, 2009, the Kayrene Uehlinger Scholarship was presented to Tyler Boyd during the morning worship at Central Baptist Church in Italy. This is the second year that the Class of 1968 has made the presentation.

Red Cross Could Use Your Help

Last week, wild fires fueled by high winds spread throughout the northwest portion of Texas and into Oklahoma. Dozens of homes were destroyed in the Montague County towns of Sunset and Stoneburg, Texas. The Red Cross, as always, sprung into action to give some relief to victims. However, they have requested donations from Italy Lions Club and the Italy Ministerial Alliance.

On Monday, the Italy City Council turned the Mayor’s job into a paid position. This is not just unwise, it’s probably illegal and certainly unethical. It undermines the trust of the community and makes everyone feel that the good old boy system is alive and well in Italy, Texas.

“I” can fly, IHS competes at District track meet

Two Varsity Gladiators and two Lady Gladiators advanced to Area and the JV Boys won the 2009 District Championship.

Italy was challenged by fierce competition at the District track meet in Hubbard this year. A 2-day event, Italy competed against Dawson, Cayuga, Itasca, Dallas Gateway, Crossroads, Wortham, Waxahachie Advantage, Dallas Faith Family and Hubbard. But after the discus landed and the triple jump sand had settled, the Mighty Gladiators had left their marks.

The City Council will be meeting Monday, April 13th at 6:30 p.m. with a full agenda. They will be covering building permits, bids for sanitation services, updating the building codes, leasing the water tower to Skybeam, action on the pet ordinance, application for the Cops Grant for the police department, review the audit report, review of the Substandard Building Ordinance, evaluation of the city secretary, and the Mayor’s salary.

Grass fire no match for area firefighters

Around 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, a grass fire was reported between Avalon and Italy just off Lufkin Road. The Italy Fire Department answered the bell and leveled the blazing fast opponent in the first hour.

Country gospel festival coming to Italy

Easter Fun at the Haights

Wednesday, April 8th two school buses with lots of Stafford Elementary students pulled up to the Haight’s residence for a magnificent Easter Egg Hunt. Along with the Stafford students there were many parents that also came for this event.

Easter Sunrise Service

The Italy Ministerial Alliance is hosting an Easter Sunrise Service at Mt. Gilead Church, 117 Harris Street in Italy at 7:00 am on Easter morning (April 12). Everyone is invited to participate in this event. Pastor Todd Gray from Central Baptist Church will provide the message. Mt. Gilead will provide special music and a breakfast brunch afterwards.

City of Italy Park Board Meeting

The Park Board Committee met Tuesday evening April 7th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Italy City Hall. Members present were: Stephanie Wilson, Susan Harris, Bruce Utley, Jason Escamilla and Janet Campbell.

Band Booster Meeting Scheduled

The Italy Band Boosters will meet Monday, April 13th at 7:00 6:00 in the band hall. All parents in attendance will be entered in a drawing for a $25.00 credit toward the Band’s trip to Arbuckle in May. We will be discussing Spring events, the band trip to Arbuckle, fundraiser results, scholarships, and end-of-the year business. We hope to see you there!

Community Wide Easter Egg Hunt in Milford

Due to necessary changes to the schedule, the Lady Gladiators will be on the road for the rest of the season. With that said, Tuesday was Senior Night for the Lady Gladiators. Seniors Angelica Garza and Blanca Figueroa were escorted onto the field by their teammates and presented flowers. After a few snapshots were taken it was all business the rest of the night.

There will be over forty eight hundred eggs for everyone to find. Which are being donated by the Park Board Committee, local businesses and citizens of Italy.

The smell of hay, mud and water filled the Expo building off of Hwy 287 this weekend. For some it became the smell of success. Italy FFA and Ellis County 4H students of all ages (9-19 years old) were taking care of business.

Adventures of the “Discipleship Now” youth group

The youth group of Central Baptist Church of Italy and the youth group of First Baptist Church of Milford joined together and participated in the “Discipleship Now” program (this program teaches youth how to grow in Christ) and had quite an adventure over this past weekend.

IHS Gladiators Baseball Honors Local Businesses

Italy Athletic Booster Club President, Becky Milligan, has been enthused about IHS Baseball for many years. After all, son, Josh who is a junior, has been playing Varsity since his 9th grade year. However, she has seen the need for financial support for the team by local residents and merchants for some time and last year implemented the sale of fence signs for the club.
