FFA/FCCLA Banquet planners need a head count

The 60th annual IHS FFA/FCCLA banquet is coming up. We would like to invite all FFA members and their parents to join us in celebrating the 2008-2009 year. The banquet is on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 7:30 in the Dome. We will be announcing the new officer team for the 2009-2010 school year and presenting awards to FFA members for their hard work this year.

Friday morning at 9:00 AM there was a lot of fun going on at Stafford Elementary. I am talking about the annual “Play Day” at Stafford Elementary. There were students, parents, teachers, and even brothers and sisters having a wonderful time.

The Votes Are In!

Image: 911 call during election — Around 6:00 p.m. just before the poles closed at 7:00 p.m., Italy Fire Engines and an ambulance responded to a 911 call. Unfortunately, while the rescue teams were keeping the City of Italy safe, Italy Fire District #3 and it’s proposition for a tax increase failed to pass by a count of 167-166, leaving 54 of the 387 total ballots cast, unmarked.

The Italy ISD School Board and the Italy Fire District results have been released. Cheryl Owen, and Marty Haight won the election for school board. The fire district tax increase results came in close, with 166 votes for and 167 votes against.

Man on stilts spotted on Hwy 34

As I was driving down Highway 34, Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 PM, I could not believe my eyes. I took a double take and yes I really did see a man walking down the highway on stilts.

Obituary: Fairace Aubrey Thompson, 1922 – 2009

Fairace Aubrey Thompson, age 87, of Italy, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie. He was born April 17, 1922 in Brushie Prairie, Texas to Robert B. and Carrie (Lindsay) Thompson.

Italy ISD/Italy Fire District Election May 9, 2009

The Ellis County Emergency Service District No. 3 (Italy Fire District) and Italy ISD have opted to combine their ballot for tomorrow’s election. The ECES District No. 3 has a tax increase proposition. The Italy ISD is electing two trustees for the school board. Exercise your American right and go vote! The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 9 in the Boze Mitchell Building in downtown Italy.

New tax increase to aid Italy’s volunteer firemen equipment needs

Image: The Italy Fire Department night trains to stay sharp — The dedicated members of the Italy Fire Department are always ready to help when we need them. Now, the I.F.D. needs our help with a vote For a proposed tax increase on May 9 to fill the void left by non-government funding.

On May 9, in conjunction with the Italy School Board election, voters will also be asked to vote For a tax increase on behalf of Italy Fire District #3. Fire Chief Donald Chambers was interviewed this past Thursday regarding the upcoming vote and Chief Chambers wishes to clarify, for the taxpayers, exactly how the tax increase would effect each household.

Stafford Elementary students in the Pre- K, Kindergarten and First grade were all invited to come have a day of fun at the Monolithic Domes. This took place last week to help the students keep busy while the higher grades took their TAKS test.

The City of Italy Park Board has scheduled a called meeting for Tuesday, May 5, 2009. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Italy City Hall. Agenda items include discussion and necessary action regarding the Kaboom project and “The Park Grand Opening”.

Italy Athletic Club Booster Meeting May 5th

The Italy Athletic Booster Club will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria Wayne Boze Building, downtown Italy. This meeting had been originally scheduled for Monday but due to the baseball/softball playoff schedules, was forced to change the date. The primary focus of this meeting will be the Athletic Banquet.

We all love watermelon! That’s why I’m glad to inform everyone that the Garza family will have watermelons on sale again this season. Luciano Garza, with the help of his son Leo Garza, rolled into town Thursday with a trailer full of juicy watermelons that the pair transported in from San Manuel, Texas, Yum!

Last chance for free dump day until next fall

The last of the Ellis County free dump days for this spring will be held on Saturday, May 9. This clean-up event is available to all Ellis County residents to dispose of trash, furniture, mattresses, yard debris, tires, and car batteries.

Megann Lewis receives top honors at Vernon College

Megann Lewis, the 2007 Valedictorian of Italy High School, was honored as the Vernon College Outstanding Student of the Year during the Honors Convocation held in April. During the ceremony, Megann was also recognized as the top English student and top Agriculture student.

As you drove up to the Epiphany Catholic Church in Italy, Texas your ears were delighted by lively music, just as your eyes were mesmerized by beautifully costumed dancers.

Italy Gladiators wrapped up their District Season on a high note

Strike 1, strike 2, strike 3! You’re out! That’s about what it sounded like for the Avalon Eagles during the last district game of the Italy Gladiators. The boys drove to Avalon to present their last defense of the district season and did a great job doing it. The final score was 10-0 with the Gladiators finishing with a district record of 10-2.

Early Voting for School Board Elections

Early voting for the Italy ISD school board election will begin on Monday, April 27, 2009 and run through Tuesday, May 5th, 2009. The times will be 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It will take place in the administration office located at 300 S. College, Italy, Texas. Election day is Saturday, May 9th 2009. The location is Wayne Boze Building located at 161 W. Main, Italy, Texas from 7:00 AM to 7:00PM.

Agenda: Italy EDC Meeting, April 27

The next regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Committee is scheduled for Monday, April 27. Agenda items include David Miracle to address the board regarding Professional Economic Development Services, discussion and possible action on a sub-committee review of Italy EDC By-laws, setting policies for federal per diem and mileage rates and management of EDC administration. There will also be discussion and consideration of funding a park project at Upchurch Fields.

I am Elmerine Allen Bell, a retired Texas public school teacher. My formative years were spent in Italy where I attended school and gained my first outlook on mankind, values and life. My parents, the late Elmer and Fredna Allen, were my motivators, and they required me to perform to the best of my ability.

Small Fire on Clark Street

Around 5:30 Thursday afternoon the Italy, Forreston and Milford fire departments were all gathered on Clark Street in Italy putting out a small house fire.

Musical Workshop at Mt Zion A.M.E. Church

Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church will be hosting a Youth Choir Musical on Saturday, April 25th at 6:00 PM. This is the place to be to sing praises to the Lord. Mittie Muse is the new Pastor of Mt. Zion and is very excited about this program.

On Tuesday night, the Gladiators traveled to Frost for the last showdown between the two teams in district play. Taking care of business was the order of the day for both the Gladiators and the Bears.

I doubted but now “I Believe”

I opted to get some extra hours in at work instead of making a trip to Hubbard on Tuesday night and frankly I messed up. To be real honest I figured I already knew the outcome of the game based on their last contest. I was wrong, dead wrong. Our Lady Gladiators defeated the Hubbard Lady Jaguars 7-3 in a contest that showcased Italy’s determination, desire and heart. Ladies, My apologies for ever doubting….“I Believe”.
