Margie Davis retires after 38 years of teaching

Italy High School is going to miss Mrs. Margie Davis. After teaching our junior high and high school students for 18 years, she is going to be sorely missed. “My end of the hallway won’t be half as exciting without me,” Margie laughingly said.

Pies in the face means money in the bank

The last day of school rolls around and what do you do? You throw pies at your principal, of course. Naturally, the event was planned and Erica Miller, Lee Joffre and Casey Holden lived up to their part of deal. The class that brought in the most donations for West ISD was allowed to throw pies at the trembling trio. Mr. Joffre took a few in the ol’ mug for a good cause.

Forty-seven seniors entered the dome on Friday night. It was the last time as a student of IHS. Dressed in cap in gown, some with medals and honor chords, the group lined up and marched to the Processional of Pomp & Circumstance, performed by the Italy High School Regiment Band, and headed to their seat in front of the podium. It was a night to remember.

IJHS holds a Science Fair

The Italy Junior High was able to include a Science Fair for an activity this year. The Science Fair was held in the dome and was hosted by Lindsey Thompson, Junior High Science teacher, and Catherine Hewett, 8th grade Science teacher, Biology and IPC (integrated physics and chemistry). With these two teachers, plans are to get the students excited about science and have fun learning.

Italy High School holds NHS induction ceremony

On May 28, Italy High School welcomed the newest members into the Italy Chapter of the National Honor Society. The 10th grade students were recommended by their teachers and are required to have five qualities which are Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character and Citizenship. They were required to have a 90 or above average in the five core subject areas for their 9th and 10th grades. The students were also required to record all awards, accomplishments and community service they performed in this same time frame. These new members will perform community service and participate in leadership training throughout the upcoming year.

Tim Green Visits Italy ISD

Italy ISD’s dome gymnasium was filled with fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grade students ready to meet Tim Green. Greene was a former football player with the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League and now is a renown author.

Salutatorian and Valedictorian Named At Academic Banquet

Italy High School hosted the 30th Annual Academic Banquet Thursday night at the Italy High School dome-nasium. Superintendent, Barry Bassett, and IHS Principal, Lee Joffre, recognized high ranking students. “The lowest GPA here tonight is 3.4,” said Joffre. The administration presented trophies to Valedictorian Reid Jacinto and Salutatorian Meagan Hooker.

Donations raised while having a bit of fun

Italy High School presented the second annual Talent Show on Tuesday evening in the open air. Parents, family and friends joined the students in the brand new Cargill-Gallman Pavilion downtown for fun, frolic and service to a neighboring community. Donations for the community of West were collected at both the Stafford Elementary campus and Italy High/Junior High School campus during the days prior to the talent show.

Italy High School’s Dual Credit Welding Class proves successful

Blake Godwin, Italy High School’s Ag Teacher, is a mover and a shaker at the high school. The dual credit Welding Class, under Godwin’s guiding hand, has built trailers for local towns people and IHS’ own maintenance department. This is Mr. Godwin’s first year of teaching and he plans to have the Welding Class be even better next year.

A Night To Remember is the theme of the Italy High School Junior/Senior prom to be held on Saturday, May 4. It will be held at the Waxahachie Civic Center in the Crepe Myrtle room. Principal Lee Joffre donned his tuxedo (rented from Lone Star Western Wear in Waxahachie) on Thursday to remind the students that the celebration is drawing near and to get their prom tickets.

During the week of April 1, 2013 some Italy High School and Italy Junior High School students will take STAAR or EOC tests. It is necessary to temporarily change the daily schedule in order to accommodate the testing needs. Testing information and schedule changes are reflected below.

On January 25, Senior Meagan Hooker had the unique privilege of speaking for former First Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush, at the Taking Care of Texas Reception in San Antonio. Mrs. Bush chose Meagan to speak about her personal experiences with youth education programs that focus on the subjects of wildlife, natural resources, and conservation because of her continued involvement and dedication to these programs.

iPad awarded to IHS perfect attendance and honor roll students

On January 14, 2013, two students from IHS were rewarded for their commitment to excellence during the first semester of the 2012-2013 school year. This is the second year that students have participated in the Hawaii 5-0 incentive where they are offered a chance to win an iPad for their outstanding grades and perfect attendance record.

Car decorating by the IHS cheerleaders

The Italy High School cheerleaders will be decorating car windows Thursday evening. The cheerleaders ask that anyone and everyone come by the dome on Thursday (from 5:30-6:30, before the Holiday band concert – OR – at 8:30 right after the pep rally). They will use window markers and draw as much or as little as you would like on your car windows.

Letter to the Editor: An invitation

The varsity boys football team has made it to the State Quarterfinals. They will be playing Goldthwaite in Glen Rose Friday at 7:30 PM. The students at the high school have worked extremely hard. This includes in the classroom, Band, Ag, Athletics, FCCLA, Theater and other areas.

Read-A-Thon at IHS

The eighth annual reading marathon was in full swing this week Nov. 26-30 at the Italy High School Library! Students, faculty and staff participated in a week-long event that had someone constantly reading in the “reading parlor” in the library from 8 a.m. Monday morning until school dismissed at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Italy Schools participated in area wide USA Bowling Special Olympics

Italy Elementary and Italy High School CBI students recently participated in the Special Olympics Bowling tournament held at USA Bowl in Dallas. According to Mrs. Young (High School CBI teacher) and Mrs. Cox (Stafford Elementary CBI teacher) the students were excited and ready to bowl and I would say they were right on target by all the ribbons and medals they brought home.

Italy ISD Gifted and Talented Program nominations due

November 9th is the last date to nominate students for the gifted and talented program at the elementary and the high school. If anyone wants to nominate a student to be tested for the Gifted and Talented Program, they should get the required paperwork submitted to Melissa Bedard at the elementary or to Sharan Farmer at the high school. The Gifted and Talented nomination forms are on the IISD website under Special Programs.
