City’s fire rating improves

The Italy City Council heard good news Monday night at its monthly meeting. Don Chambers, fire chief, said the Insurance Service Office has reclassified the City of Italy from a Class 7 to a Class 5.

IHS Varsity squads get thumbs up on playoffs

Italy – That’s right, “Playoffs!” Both Italy Varsity basketball squads are heading to the playoffs. Thanks to an Italy Lady Gladiator’s win over Grand Prairie AA and an Itasca win over Family Faith of Dallas, the Lady Gladiators finished in 3rd place and are making their 1st post season appearence since 2006.

Agenda: Alternative Energy, Street Repairs, General Election

During this month’s regular City Council meeting, tonight at 6:30 p.m., the council will begin the meeting with an alternative energy solutions presentation. The upcoming general election (election of Mayor and three Council Seats) details will be discussed as well as requests for traffic signs and street repairs, some of which had been tabled from previous meetings.

Tyler Boyd is not your typical high school senior. In fact, he enjoys being unique and different from other young people. While many teenagers only think of today, Tyler has known what he wanted to do with his life for a long time. He wants to teach history on the college level.

Italy Lions Club to host BBQ Cook Off

Bring your smoker! The Italy Lions Club will host a BBQ Cook Off on February 27th & 28th at Upchurch Ball Park. BBQ plate lunches will be also sold. All proceeds from the plate lunches will benefit the Lions Club Scholarship Program.

The Italy Coliseum – Italy Gladiator Throwback Night was a star-studded affair as former players, managers and coaches of the 1982-1986 Regional Qualifying Basketball Teams were recognized for their past efforts and rewarded with warm applause and personalized plaques.

“National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week”

The week of February 2 – 6, 2009 has been declared as this year’s “National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week.” Designed to increase public awareness and education regarding teen dating violence this initiative was first established in 2006. Italy High School will be participating by providing daily tips and educational material to the student body.

Yesterday, January 30th, mid-morning, traffic was diverted off south bound I-35. A jackknifed semi was the cause of the backed up trail of cars and trucks.

Stafford Elementary collecting “Pennies for Patients”

Image: Lots of Pennies — These pennies will help thousands of people fight blood cancers like leukemia, which causes more deaths among children and young adults than any other cancer.

Stafford Elementary is participating in the program “Pennies for Patients.” If you happen to go into the office at Stafford you will see a huge bottle with pennies inside. The students are really working hard on filling up the bottles. In various places in the school there are lots of jars just waiting for your pennies or spare change.

Gladiators postpone games until Thursday

According to Italy Varsity girl’s head coach, Stacy McDonald, games planned for Tuesday, Jan. 27 against Itasca have been changed to Thursday, Jan 29. The frosty weather has changed things and the Varsity games will be played beginning at 5:00 pm in Itasca. The Varsity boys will play at 6:30.
