The Relay For Life of Central Ellis County held a Team Captain’s meeting on March 19, 2015. The traveling trophy is awarded to the team that turns in the most money each month. The winner for March was the Dart team with $2.997.

A cancer diagnosis – Charlotte James

In January of 2009, Charlotte James’s life was forever changed. That was the month that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was the month she decided to fight cancer with every ounce of her being. She was determined to do whatever it took to beat cancer. She wanted to live – she did not want to be another statistic.

One person can make a difference

Can one person make a difference? According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) it is estimated that 1,660,290 people in the United States will be diagnosed with some type of cancer this year. That number breaks down to 854,790 men and 805,500 women. This estimate does not include basal and squamous cell skin and non-invasive carcinomas, with the exception of urinary bladder cancer. Based on rates from 2008 to 2010, nearly 41 percent of men and women born today will be diagnosed with cancer at some time during their lifetime.

30th Anniversary of Relay For Life

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The Relay For Life of Central Ellis County will be held on May 30, 2015 at the Waxahachie Sports Complex from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. All Ellis County residents are invited and encouraged to attend.

Italy Police Dept and Italy Fire Dept. goes Christmas Shopping

On December 15th, the Italy Police Dept. and the Italy Fire Dept. joined forces and took 6 Stafford Elementary children Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart. After all of the shopping was done they had lunch together at CiCi’s pizza. Then they all ventured back to the Italy Community Center to wrap the presents and had cookies and punch for a snack. The Police Officers and Fireman had as much fun as the kids did shopping.

IHS canned food drive for Italy Food Pantry—Everybody Won!

The Italy National Honor Society, sponsored by Tina Richards, the Italy Junior High National Honor Society, sponsored by Casey Holden, and the Italy HS/JHS student council, sponsored by Vivian Moreland, held their annual canned food drive competition, and EVERYBODY WON, donating 540 cans of food to the Italy Food Pantry! The Pantry volunteers cannot thank you enough for the wonderful contribution you have made to the Italy Food Pantry.

The Italy Fire Department and Italy Police Department would like to thank everyone that supported their “Fill the Boot” campaign last Friday. Because of the generosity of the local community, over $600 was raised for Shop with a Hero. They appreciate the willingness of the citizens of Italy to open their hearts and pockets for this cause.

George Scott Scholarship fundraiser

The 22nd Annual George E. Scott Memorial Scholarship Dinner was held last Friday night before the Homecoming football game in the school cafeteria. The catered meal by Bubba’s Barbecue of Ennis featured brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, bread and tea.

Salvation Army Angel Tree applications are being sought

The Salvation Army in Waxahachie will begin accepting applications for their annual Christmas Assistance Angel Tree program September 29th through October 16th. Monday-Thursday, 9am-12pm and Saturdays, 9am-2pm. The Angel Tree program is able to provide Christmas gifts for children (14 and under) through the donations other others in the community. All families interested in receiving this assistance, must apply during application dates.

Local Food Pantry fills an important need

For the last ten years, families have been coming to the Italy Food Pantry twice each month to receive groceries to supplement their food needs. As the need grew, so did the number of families the pantry services. It takes $1,000 or more each month to pay for the food, utilities, insurance and miscellaneous expenses such as paper bags and tape. Several churches in the Italy Ministerial Alliance donate funds each month. Private donations also help with expenses also.

Guns vs Hoses a huge success

On behalf of the Italy Police Department and Italy Fire Department, I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone that supported our Guns vs Hoses fundraiser on July 5th. I would also like to thank all of our sponsors for helping us raise money for the Shop with a Hero program. Without the support of the community and our great sponsors there isn’t any way for us to make this a successful program.

Milford serves lunches and smiles

The Milford Senior Citizens Center has been serving meals for as long as the residents can remember. And to this day they are still holding up their tradition of approximately 30 years of serving delicious hot lunches for seniors, friends and family.

Lone Star Cyclists host 29th year of Tour d’Italia bike ride centered in Italy

With the tire pressure checked, the chains well oiled and the water bottles filled, 1,175 Tour d’Italia bike riders set a new participation record this past Saturday while touring parts of Ellis, Hill and Navarro Counties. Hosted by Lone Star Cylclists, club president, David Shuford, was presented a golden key to the City of Italy by Mayor James Hobbs.

South Ellis County Random Acts of Kindness

We are a new community outreach serving, Italy, Forreston, Milford and Avalon. We are collecting donations of clothing, housewares, linens, etc, for distribution to the needy in our area. We are also involved in the Victim Relief Ministries.

With help she made a difference

Madison Dickerson is a very vibrant fifth grader that attends Stafford Elementary. She is smart, pretty, but best of all she has a very compassionate and giving heart. When she heard that April Mathers (1st grade teacher) had cancer and beat it through treatments, Madison wanted to help everyone beat cancer. So, she came up with a way to raise money for St. Jude Hospital.

Italy Food Pantry is in need of a storm door

The Italy Food Pantry serves people in our communities of Italy, Avalon, Milford and Forreston by helping families to extend their food dollars. Most of our 80 clients are retired, single-parent, disabled, unemployed, and also includes those wonderful people assisting relatives by taking in their children to live with them.

When Randy Compton graduated from Italy High School in 1972, he had many plans and dreams. He loved to hunt and fish and hang out with his friends. He never dreamed that life’s road would take him where it has brought him to today, fighting cancer for the third time.

I don’t know a child that is not excited about Christmas and all that goes with it.They can’t wait to get up Christmas morning and see what Santa has left under the tree. But not all children are lucky enough to have something waiting for them under the tree. The Milford Titus Women’s Club are trying to make sure that every child in Milford will wake up Christmas morning and find a present.

Titus Women’s Club of Milford members are so very grateful for the great job the first responders did in helping the community when the Chevron pipeline exploded in Milford. So, they decided to show their appreciation by handing out plaques to Bruce Perryman (Mayor of Milford), Mark Jackson (Fire Chief of Milford) and Chief of Police Carlos Phoenix at this month’s City Council Meeting.

Toys for Tots for local children

The VFW Toys for Tots will be available again this year for local children. The deadline to apply is December 16, 2013. If a child is on another list such as the Salvation Army or Toy Run, they are not eligible for this program. Information will be verified.

Local family in need

As a result of a recent automobile accident, the family of Kenneth and Sherrie Wilsford, long time Italy residents, is in need of assistance. During Kenneth’s recovery, Sherrie is having to stay home from work to provide the round-the-clock care that Kenneth is needing. Kenneth and Sherrie have a young daughter, Kelsey. First State Bank of Italy has set up an account and is accepting donations on the family’s behalf.

George Scott Scholarship fundraiser a success

The George Scott Scholarship fundraiser was held at Italy High School Friday night. Family members of George Scott and several scholarship recipients welcomed members of the community and Italy High School ex-students when they arrived at the cafeteria. Everyone enjoyed a delicious barbecue meal catered by Bubba’s in Ennis.

Italy Food Pantry will be open Wednesday, October 16th

Because of the unusual way the weeks fall this month, the Italy Food Pantry will be open next Wednesday morning, October 16, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Food Pantry is located on Hwy 77 between the barber shop and the Mexican food restaurant.

Italy Lions Club vision screening at Stafford Elementary

Friday morning the Italy Lions Club had a large vision bus parked at Stafford Elementary ready to supply students with glasses. This bus has an eye doctor, vision equipment, glasses and helpful Italy Lions Club members ready to make sure every student that needs glasses receives glasses. It is like an eye doctors office on wheels. Italy Lions Club has been doing this for five years now.

The Rockett Ranch Café and Club in Milford held its first annual barbeque cook off last Saturday, Oct. 5. The turnout was less than expected. Speculation suggested the rain prediction could have been the reason or the 60% payout for prize money. It was decided next year would deliver an 80% payout and pray for better weather.
