U.S. News & World Report ranked Milford High School as one of the best high schools in the US. There were more than 21,000 public high schools evaluated in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards and how well students were prepared for college. Milford ISD earned a Bronze Metal!
On May 3rd, 2013, the first Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration took place in downtown Italy at it’s new pavilion. The weather could not have co-operated more as it was a warm evening. There was lots of good food, lots of good music and lots of contest winners which adds up to a great time and a successful event.
My name is Madison Washington, I am currently a sophomore at Italy High School. During this current school year I served as the assistant drum major for the IHS Gladiator Regiment Band. I assisted Drum Major, Emily Stiles, in a phenomenal marching season and just as successful concert season. Last year, when I tried out for drum major, I had no idea what I was getting in to.
As a student at Italy High School, Quincy Babers never considered a career in the military; but when he got home one afternoon, an Army recruiter was sitting in his living room.
Saturday, May 11th the Oscar Store in Oscar, Texas, near Temple, will have a benefit for the West EMS. Oscar Store is located at 8133 Oscar Spur Road, Temple, Texas 76501. The event will begin at 9:00am, with live music from 1:00pm until 1:00am. All proceeds will be donated to West Emergency Medical Services.

Marguaret Josephine Poe Ivy, age 72, of Italy, passed away Friday morning, May 3, 2013 at Baylor Medical Center, Waxahachie. She was born June 29, 1940 in Italy, Texas to Clyde and Pauline (Meadows) Poe. She was a devout Christian and was very active in church up until the past few years. Jo known by all was a loving mom, wife and friend who never met a stranger.
Right now the voters in Italy and surrounding area will decide to approve or decline a property tax increase for our fire department. I would not ask a doctor to save my life without the proper equipment and I will not ask our fire personnel to do that either.

The Lions Club will have their regular monthly meeting this Sunday, May 5th at 3pm at the Monolithic Training Center at 209 Dome Park Place, Italy. There will be a guest speaker for the Texas Lions Camp. An invitation is extended to the community to come and hear about this special camp.
Avalon School has been listed once again by the U.S. News and World Report magazine as one of the best high schools in the United States. Avalon is listed as receiving the Bronze Award in the April 23, 2014 on-line edition of the national publication. The school was also listed as a Bronze Award Recipient in 2008, 2010, and 2012.
The Lady Gladiators will play in an Area Championship softball game on Friday, May 3 at Hall Middle School in Weatherford. In a double-header format, game one will begin at 6:00pm and will be followed by game two at 8:00pm. A fan bus will be available.

Distracted driving is a serious problem and presents a serious threat to public safety, both to the people doing it and to other motorists on the road. With that in mind recently Mayor Pruitt, the City Council and the Maypearl Police Department joined forces in passing a City Ordinance banning the use of wireless devices for any purpose other than making a telephone call while operating a motor vehicle. Maypearl joins 25 other Cities in the D/FW metroplex that have already adopted such an ordinance.
The City of Italy is hosting their 1st Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration this Friday, May 3rd from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All activities will be held in downtown Italy.
Blake Godwin, Italy High School’s Ag Teacher, is a mover and a shaker at the high school. The dual credit Welding Class, under Godwin’s guiding hand, has built trailers for local towns people and IHS’ own maintenance department. This is Mr. Godwin’s first year of teaching and he plans to have the Welding Class be even better next year.
Italy and the surrounding area’s fire district are in dire need of improving the fire department to take care of all of us in case of fire and ambulance needs. It is a volunteer fire station so it already runs for less. But it has needs to do its job for us, the people. As publisher of the Italy Neotribune I would ask all to support the very small increase in taxes. We will all get back benefits in help as well as lower fire insurance costs. Please vote favorably for the improvement.
Italy — The National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony may have taken place back in February inside the Italy High School Band Hall but its never too late to brag on the academic accomplishments of the inductees!

The Italy Gladiator baseball team will travel to Cayuga on Thursday, May 2 for a warm-up game. Game time is slated for 6:00pm.

The Stafford Elementary Student Council is at it again. Whenever someone needs a helping hand the Stafford Student Council members put their heads together, make a plan and do what is needed. So it comes as no surprise that they are at it again and coming up with a plan to help the town of West after the devastating explosion.
From Friday, April 26 to Tuesday, May 14 students will have an opportunity to give donations during their 3rd period class. Also, all of the proceeds from the 2nd Annual Italy JH/HS talent show on May 14 will be donated to help the victims of West.
The Lady Gladiators make the grade after getting get tested by Scurry-Rosser and the Mildred during a double-header on Thursday as all three teams prepare for the playoffs.

SWB Youth Foundation of Fairfield, Texas is having a benefit 5K and 1K run. The event will be held on Saturday, May 25 at the Fairfield XC Course at 6515 Post Oak Street in beautiful Fairfield, Texas.
Saturday, April 27 the JV Gladiators will take on Clifton at 12:30 here in Italy. The varsity squad will not have a game due to another late cancellation, this time by Wortham.
A Night To Remember is the theme of the Italy High School Junior/Senior prom to be held on Saturday, May 4. It will be held at the Waxahachie Civic Center in the Crepe Myrtle room. Principal Lee Joffre donned his tuxedo (rented from Lone Star Western Wear in Waxahachie) on Thursday to remind the students that the celebration is drawing near and to get their prom tickets.
Telico, Bardwell, Milford and Italy Volunteer Fire Departments traveled down the road early Thursday morning. They were headed to the Memorial Service held at the Ferrell Center at Baylor University in the afternoon. The procession entered I-35 and joined other Fire Departments and the Patriot Guard already en route.
Chaos, hurt, grief are just few of the words that come to mind when you think of the town 30 miles south of Italy. West, Texas, home of the best kolaches—maybe in the world, has been victim of an explosion so deep and so wide, it has affected the nation. The West Fertilizer plant exploded at 7:53 pm last Wednesday and many lost their lives, their homes, their loved ones and their peace of mind. However, volunteers from Italy and surrounding communities were among the first there to help.
A memorial fund has been created in the memory of Greg Pickard to accept donations for mounting a plaque in Italy’s downtown pavilion in Greg’s honor. Remaining funds will be presented as a scholarship to Italy graduates hoping to attend fire training school.
Since springtime is upon us, let’s all take some time to clean up our areas of responsibility and keep your grass mowed to a reasonable length. Let’s Keep Italy Clean!

The Lady Gladiator Softball team will host Scurry-Rosser and Mildred on Thursday, April 25 for a double-header that will begin at 5:30pm. Each game will be 5 innings long.
Gladiator Baseball playoff shirt orders are being accepted now. The shirts are $14 each and feature a front and back design including the complete varsity playoff roster. Payment is due at the time of order. No payment at delivery will be accepted and no extra shirts will be ordered.
Saturday, May 11, 2013 the citizens of Italy, Texas will be voting for a mayor and two city council members. The community in and around Italy will also be voting on an amendment proposed by the Ellis County Emergency Service District #3. The citizens of Milford will have both a city council and school board election.
These two folks are very humble in receiving the Citizen of the Month recognition. In fact, they thought someone put the sign at the wrong house. They even went so far as to call Mayor Jackson to make sure the sign was in the right yard!
The 1A Lady Gladiators take down 2A Malakoff and 3A Ferris during warm-up games to help all the teams prepare for their playoff runs.
Several Gladiator and Lady Gladiator track athletes are slated to represent Italy during area meet.
The Lady Gladiator Softball warm-up game that was scheduled for today against Scurry has been postponed until Thursday of this week. Game time will be 5:30.
The Gladiators clip Waxahachie Faith Family 10-4 to guarantee Italy a piece of the district title but still need a win over Avalon on Tuesday to clinch district.
The Italy Planning and Zoning Commission held two public hearings and approved two requests – a zoning change and a specific use permit at a meeting Monday evening.
There were no members of the public present Monday evening to voice their opposition for or against a walking trail at Upchurch Field at an Italy Economic Development Corporation public hearing.
The Italy School Board of Trustees named Jonathan Nash of Red Oak the new principal at Stafford Elementary at a special meeting Monday evening.
It was a bittersweet Sunday for members of Central Baptist Church in Italy as member of the Italy High School class of 1968 presented its last Kayrene Uehlinger Scholarship.
A mandatory information session will be held Monday, April 22th at 7pm in the IHS Band Hall for those interested in Color Guard for the 2013-14 school year. Parents/legal guardian(s) must attend this meeting. Please see attached flyer for more details.
