Myla Wilson has been the principal for Stafford Elementary for a very short time. And in that short time she has had a big impact on our school. We now have a student council and a choir to name just a few of the positive programs she instituted. Her last day is this Friday. She has been offered a wonderful job opportunity with DeSoto ISD.

On Saturday, March 2, Mt. Gilead Baptist Church hosted its Entrance Ceremony. The church has opened its new doors and sanctuary and is ready for the business at hand. In the Bible, Mt. Gilead was the region east of the Jordan River and took a prominent place in the history of the Bible. (Gen. 31:25) It was considered a rugged mountain.

Thursday morning the cafeteria was full with students, teachers, family and friends celebrating Black History Month. With the help of the choir, students and guest speakers, it was a huge success.

‘Man of the Hour’, Don Chambers

Citizen of the Month for February is no other than Don Chambers. Not only has he lived in Italy since he was a freshman in high school but he has also served our community with his fire fighting skills since 1973. Is it any wonder he is the ‘Man of the Hour"’ this month?

February birthdays celebrated at Trinity Mission

February is the month of the year known for Valentines Day. Everyone loves Valentines Day especially residents at Trinity Mission. You know, cookies, Valentine Queen and King nominations and crowning of the winners! But Valentines Day is not the only special event in February at Trinity Mission.

Italy High School makes daily schedule adjustments for testing

During the week of March 4, 2013 some Italy High School students will take the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test or benchmark curriculum assessments. It is necessary to temporarily change the daily schedule in order to accommodate the testing needs. Testing information and schedule changes are reflected below.

Obituary: Louis “Lou” Eugene Martina, 1928 – 2013

Louis “Lou” Eugene Martina, age 84, of Italy passed away Monday, February 25, 2013 in the company of family and friends. He was born June 10, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Dorothy C. and Louis C. Martina. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1949 to 1952. Lou worked for the City of Italy for 10 years and also helped keep the city beautiful by picking up trash.

Memorial visitation set for Pickard family

The Italy community is invited to come and spend time with the family of the late Greg Pickard during a visitation at the Italy Boze Community Center on Saturday, March 2 at 2:00pm. Greg, son of Bob and Carla Pickard of Italy, recently lost his life in the line of duty with the Bryan Fire Department.

Lou Martina retires from the City of Italy

Image: Lou Martina loved Italy. He father was from Sicily so he thought Italy would be a good place to live.

After twelve years of service, Lou Martina retires from the City of Italy. I know everyone know who he is! Lou could be seen every morning around 5:30 AM in his red pick up truck in downtown Italy sweeping streets and picking up trash. He loved his job and took it very seriously but always had a smile for those passing by.

Italy High School student speaks at “Taking Care of Texas” reception

On January 25, Senior Meagan Hooker had the unique privilege of speaking for former First Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush, at the Taking Care of Texas Reception in San Antonio. Mrs. Bush chose Meagan to speak about her personal experiences with youth education programs that focus on the subjects of wildlife, natural resources, and conservation because of her continued involvement and dedication to these programs.

Visitation for Greg will be held at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan on Thursday, February 21st from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Central Baptist Church, 1991 FM 158, College Station on Friday, February 22nd at 10 a.m.

Upcoming election packets are available

The upcoming local elections are scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2013. There are three school board seats, two city council seats, the office of the Mayor of Italy as well as an Ellis County Emergency Service District #3 election all to be decided that day.
