With playoffs within reach, IYAA teams push forward against Mildred

With each team having a bye next week, the IYAA’s cheerleaders and players had much riding on their games against Mildred on Saturday. All three IYAA teams (A, B and C) played hard and after the final buzzer sounded, signaling the last Italy games of the regular season, two IYAA teams had definitely qualified for the playoffs while the third waits for their fate.

Commissioners’ Court provides direction for generosity

Ricardo Hernandez of Ennis was the picture of both generosity and humility on Monday evening when he approached the Commissioners’ Court with an unusual request: he wanted to donate some money to the county in order to help others. Hernandez spoke in Spanish, with his daughter to translate.

Italy ISD Announces Child Find Efforts

Italy ISD offers comprehensive special education services to eligible students ages three through 21 years and to children from birth through 21 years who have a hearing or visual impairment.  Children from birth to age three with other disabilities will be referred to appropriate agencies for services.  

Open Tryouts For Lady Mustangs

Darla Gardner is the Director of Therapy at Trinity Mission. She has been at Trinity Mission for about eight months, but she did not come alone. She brought Lisa Marie, the cutest little chihauhua you ever saw. She sports designer fashions and is a dog with a mission.

Salvation Army sponsors Angel Tree

The autumn leaves are beginning to fall right now but there are some people gearing up for Christmas Day. The Waxahachie Salvation Army is receiving applications for their Angel Tree which will help children in need for Christmas. They are inviting the citizens of Italy and surrounding areas to respond.

Bus evacuation drills at Stafford Elementary

In keeping with fire safety week, students at Stafford Elementary were also learning how to evacuate a bus in dangerous situations last week. School bus drivers had their busses lined up and were ready to share their important tips on how to evacuate the bus in an emergency.

Memories and Memories and More

It is strange how my mind works sometimes. I can be rocking along and a memory come to mind for no apparent reason. Sometimes something specific will cause one to surface. I have different reactions to memories. I am very fortunate to have been allowed to build such a vast bank of memories from the people that God has blessed me with. Some have stayed for a very long time – others were only in my life for a short period.

Members of the IYAA family (Italy Youth Athletic Association) joined Mayor Jackson, council members Greg Richards, Dennis Perkins and Bruce Utley and city employees for cake, cookies and punch inside the council chambers at Italy City Hall to celebrate the proclamation.

Central Baptist Church Youth Group aluminum recycling campaign

The youth at Central Baptist Church are doing an on-going fundraiser. We will be collecting aluminum cans (vegetable or soda) to turn in for cash to use for youth events, fifth quarters, camps, and whatever else the youth may need. We have a trailer on the side of the Cornerstone that you can put your cans in.

Obituary: Johnny Roy Hooks, 1946 – 2010

Johnny Roy Hooks entered this life on March 4, 1946 to the parents of Arthur Lee and Della Mae Hooks in Palestine. Johnny received his education in Italy and graduated from Stafford High School. He started his career in the United States Air Force where he served four years as a Military Police Officer. He then met and married Dorothy Jean Watkins and to this union one child was born, Jennifer.

IHS Class of 2000 Hosting 10 Year Reunion Friday

The Class of 2000 Reunion is this Friday, October 22, with activities before and during the football game. Please join us in the high school cafeteria at 6 p.m., and then during the football game, look for the tent with the banner where we’ll be gathered.

The Bison buffalo the Gladiators to win 41-21

The Buffalo Bison (5-3,1-1) bulled their way over the Italy Gladiators (4-3,1-1) by a score of 41-21 in week two of the of the 2A-2 Region II District 11 race. The loss puts the Italy in a four-way tie for second place with Buffalo, Centerville and Leon who the Gladiators take on this Friday in Italy.

IYAA cheerleaders cheer, players play and memories are made

Italy — With all the fanfare of a high school football game, the IYAA (Italy Youth Athletic Association) wrapped up their final home games of the 2010 football season while entertaining fans throughout the day. IYAA players, cheerleaders and fans from both Italy and Rice enjoyed banner busting, flag waving entrances, big hits, exciting plays, sideline cheers and halftime performances by the IYAA cheerleaders.

Fields of Faith hosted by local FCA chapter

One man’s story is another man’s dream. With the help of Coach Heather Richters, Italy High School Head Volleyball and Track Coach, Willis Field was transposed from a frightful playing field on Friday nights to a gentle meeting place for over 180 Christian students, hailing from Hubbard, Frost, Milford, Blooming Grove and Italy.

Fall Festival planned at First Baptist Church

Saturday, October 30, 2010 the First Baptist Church of Italy will have their annual Fall Festival. This free, fun event for the entire family will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There will be a bounce house and games along with treats and eats. The entire community is invited!

“Fields of Faith” FCA event tonight

The Italy chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is sponsoring an event on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, 7:00 p.m. at the Italy HS football field. Students from Italy HS will be joining thousands of other youth on athletic fields all across America to share their Christian faith with fellow students during the 7th Annual National Fields of Faith event. This rapidly growing, interdenominational outreach, event will be held at more than 400 locations throughout the nation on this same date.

Help for a family in need

Last Sunday, Ashley Wendler’s house exploded with everything she owns inside. Ashley and her two children Alxus and Chase were not in the house so fortunately no one was hurt. But everything they own is gone.
